Reading the thread about the creation of Scrappy Doo, I started thinking, a lot of people dislike Scrappy (though I don't... and that thread proves that more didn't, either), but I was wondering, what do people think about Scooby-Doo's brother, Scooby-Dum, who appeared on The Scooby-Doo Show (aka the first half of The Scooby Doo/ Dynomutt Hour)? I thought he was an interesting character, though I don't remember much about him (mostly his stupidity). I wonder why he was dropped from the cast so soon.

I liked him when I was younger, but don't recall him appearing in a lot of episodes. Not the way Scrappy took over the franchise for quite some time.

Scooby Dum was actaully Scooby Doo's cousin, although in the Headless Horseman episode, Shaggy described Dum as Scooby's brother. In any case Scooby Dum was never a member of Mysteries, Inc., he was only a recurring character. I don't think Scooby Dum has been seen since his stint on Laff-A-Lympics.

He was a funny character. He would have gotten old had he been seen more. The good part was that he was well written for the few appearances he had. What was bad about Scrappy was he was overbearing & dominated every scene to the point where the rest of the cast was dumped in favor of him.

I am not sure why they dropped Scooby Dum from the Scooby Doo series. He has appeared only in a few episodes and I hardly remember him. It would be nice to see him in another scooby doo episode but I think that it is very doubtful.

I liked ol' Dum although I'm surprised he appeared in only four episodes of The Scooby Doo Show. Shame he hasn't seen the light of day since his last appearence in Laff-a-Lympics.

I just read at wikipedia that Scooby-Dum only appeared in four episodes. That was a surprise. I mean, wasn't he in the opening? It was also at wikipedia where I read that he was Scooby's cousin, not brother which I'd heard (I guess in that epsidoe that others had mentioned, where he's mistakenly referred to as his brother).

I wonder what a team-up between Scooby-Dum and Scrappy-Doo would have been like.

No, except maybe in one of the syndicated openings, and even then it would've just been a clip. Scooby-Dum was never a full-time member of the Scooby Gang, he was just a recurring guest character.

If A Pup Named Scooby-Doo can be considered canon, Scooby has 2 brothers, Skippy and Howdy, and a sister, Ruby, who is the mother of Scrappy-Doo (as revealed in one of the Richie Rich/Scooby-Doo Show shorts).

I wonder what a team-up between Scooby-Dum and Scrappy-Doo would have been like.Very annoying, I suspect. I shudder to think...

What was bad about Scrappy was he was overbearing & dominated every scene to the point where the rest of the cast was dumped in favor of him. The rest of the cast was already becoming less prominent, as the focus had become purely on Scooby and Shaggy and the comedy. Scooby Dum marked the beginning of this, and was probably basically a "test" for a new sidekick for them. a third character basically maintained the balance, as Fred and the girls were becoming more and more distant at that time anyway.

Scrappy and Scooby Dum together would be redundant. Notice, both were basically brave, and in one way or another, ran toward the ghost while Shaggy and Scooby ran away. Scrappy was pretty much the perfection (ducking!) of the idea introduced in Scooby Dum.

People's reactions are basically mixed, with some not minding him as much as Scrappy, for the reasons stated; and some others hating im just as much, as they did not like any addition to the show.

I'm surprised they didn't bring him back over the various seasons especially since the Doo family (and not just Scrappy) became more prominent over the years.

Another cousin, Scooby-Dee, was a canine actress who appeared along with Doo and Dum in an episode of The Scooby-Doo Show, and she actually cameoed in an episode of What's New Scooby-Doo, when the gang attended a dog show. Of course, there was no sign of Scooby-Dum, who made more appearances of Laff-a-Lympics than TSDS.

In the Scrappy period, you had two more "Scoobies" revelaled (Grandpa, and the ghost of Great Grandpa), but afterward, it was all Doo's only. I imagine one was his mother's side of the family, and the other was his father's side.

I remembered some talk of bringing her back as Scooby's girlfriend, which would have been the next season after 13 Ghosts. But that was obviously dropped.

If Scooby-Dum could still be played, today, Warner Bros. might likely have Bill Farmer, a.k.a. Goofy, as his voice, opposite Frank Welker as Scooby-Doo. Nonetheless, between Scooby-Dum and Scrappy-Doo, clearly Scooby-Dum was the more likeable of the two.

Scrappy was funnier, and had more character to him. The funniest thing Scooby Dum did was jumping in the arms of the vampire who caused Scooby to jump in Shaggy's arms as usual, so Dum tried to follow suit. He basically ran towards the villains out of stupidity, where Scrappy was directly challenging them.

Scooby Dum was based on the character Mortimer Snerd invented by Edgar Bergan.
