For college kids, we're in finales. That means LONG hours of staying up and studying for exams. So, what's the latest you've stayed awake and will you beat it this year?

Usually 11 or 12. But I've actually failed to sleep on a few occasions (forgot to take meds those nights).

What would the answer be if you've fallen asleep at every possible hour of the day, including none at all? :p
I don't expect to beat 4 days without sleep (which I've done more than once), nor would I want to try.

I was once awake till around 8:30 PM after staying up all night the previous night. I was riding Greyhound buses home from Chicago. It's difficult for me to fall asleep on moving vehicles.

as a kid, i thought staying up late and reaching for 24hrs was awesome. now i just realized it sucks because you get tired most of the time. but the biggest 3 recent times I've went past 24hrs is

1. junior year in high school, stayed up till about 5:40 am and woke up at 6am to get to school on time. i had a weaving project i worked on for literally 12 hrs straight with a possible bathroom break in between.

2. my friends and I watched all 6 star wars movies plus genndy tartakovsky's animated series in one sitting in sequential order. marathon finished at about 9 or 930 am but i stayed up so late i went beyond being tired and didn't go to sleep afterward until that night shortly before midnight. i think we started at about 6pm the previous day.

3. the day super smash bros. brawl came out i played it for 12hrs 47 minutes straight. i started out on multiplayer with some friends, then i beat subspace emissary in that one sitting, then i went to start unlocking more stuff. the only reason i stopped was because i fell asleep playing the game. when I woke up i was at the results screen and I came in last. The only other game I ever fell asleep playing was the original super smash bros. game on N64 when my friends and I started to play 99 stock at like 5am, so we were already pretty tired. i never owned a gamecube so melee never had the opportunity. But back to brawl, I slept for about 3 hrs and when I woke up, I went right back to playing it for about another 4 hrs. God i love that game.

I'm usually up until about 2AM every night, just messing around, on the computer or maybe playing video games or watching DVDs. Sometimes it's 3AM, if two rolls around and I'm still in the middle of something and just not wanting to stop yet.

The latest I've stayed up in my entire life was about 6AM or a little after. It was during a sleepover with a friend in 6th grade. We went to the video store and rented a bunch of movies and cartoons, then stayed up all night watching them. We made tons of popcorn, and also read comics and played video games. It was a lot of fun. For the longest time, I'd never stayed up anywhere near that late again.

Over the last few years, I've had sleepovers at another friend's house. Since we live(d) about three hours apart, our visits were spread out, so we'd try to do as much as we could for the week or two I was staying. Often we'd be up until 4-5AM, just watching movies and shooting the breeze. Sometimes we'd intend to go to be around 2AM, but we'd get distracted by a movie on a cable, then after that was over, we'd say "We'll just watch a few minutes" of whatever was coming on next, then end up watching that entire movie, too. Good times.

I used to regularly stay up until around 6:00 am, especially after I discovered this forum back in 2005. That was when Teen Titans was still popular and the World's Finest Writers' Corner was in it's glory days. I'd sit up all night reading TT stories until I heard my Dad's alarm clock go off, then try to get in bed and pretend to be asleep before he got up to go to work. I figure he probably heard me most of the time, but he always humored me.

More recently, I'd pull all-nighters playing Xbox or The Sims, but that hasn't been an option since my baby brother was born in March. For some reason I've been saddled with the joyous task of taking care of him when he wakes up during the night (which he does at least once virtually every night), so staying up any later than 3:00 is generally a mistake. I usually try to get to bed as early as possible now, but my three-year-old sister's unpredictable and difficult to manage sleep schedule makes that hard most of the time. She has learned that screaming in this unholy high-pitched voice will get her anything she wants once the baby goes to sleep, and she uses that to keep us from getting her to sleep. She usually gives out by 2:00, at which point I'm on the verge of collapse, too.

There have been a few instances when I've stayed up all night. Most recently, we had new carpet put down in our house this May. For obvious reasons, we had to wait until the last second to move all our furniture and stuff, and I stayed up from 6:00 am until around noon the next day helping with that. Not an experience I'd like to repeat.;)

I remember when I was little I stayed up all night since I wanted to do it like my big brother did. When I did finally stay up all night, I fell asleep and didn't wake up until around one. Anyway, as for when I'm working on finals or huge papers, I can be up as late as two in the morning and still wake up around six thirty in order to get ready for my classes. I just did that last night working on my final paper for my seminar class, but I hope that I won't have to do that every night until Thursday, the last day of my classes this semester.

43 hours straight.

See, I had a sleep cycle that was from 8am to 4/5pm. I decided to reverse it by simply staying up and... well, it worked; now I had the problem of getting up too early at 4/5am.

Oh well, at least I can do what I have to do and be done around 1/2pm.

I stayed up all night writing a history paper final for college, without resting, followed by a day of classes. It was at the last minute and I wanted the damn thing done, and surprisingly I got an A on it.

I can, and usually stay up all night, except I'm trying to go to bed early from now on so I can go to the gym at 4:30am Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Yes, I have finally broken down and bought a YMCA membership, but it's actually pretty nice and they have cable machines (really nice too), an indoor pool, and cable. Feels like a ski lodge.

Back on topic, if I stay up all night I usually fall apart at noon unless I'm up on my feet, then I'll be lucky if I don't chuck. Nothing's worse than being exhausted and not being able to relax, because my adrenaline won't go down, which is what happens if I force myself to stay up past noon at that point.

At the end of senior year in high school, I pulled an all-nighter working on a calculus project then went to school. That night we left for our senior trip around midnight and I got maybe 2 hours of sleep on the bus, then we had 10 hours at the amusement park we went to then we drove back through the night and I got maybe another hour or two of sleep before crashing when I got home around 2 am.

Both my freshman and sophomore years of college, I had to pull all-nighters and go to class before leaving for Conference Tournament (softball). I'd usually nap on the bus ride, but that is never good sleep. Then we'd have the banquet that evening and not get to bed until 11 or 12 that night.

This semester the latest I've been up was 3:30am Thursday night/Friday morning finishing a paper then getting up at 8:30 for class. But meh. My finals week is going to be relatively quiet this semester, so I don't anticipate any all-nighters with the majority of my work done (three finals and one test stand between me and break, woo~).

I've stayed up all night maybe once, only because the doctor said I should do it to reset my circadian rhythms. Didn't work, i'm still going to bed and waking up whenever.

Beyond that, I think I stayed up all night a few Christmases ago when I got a set of The Red Green Show DVDs for Christmas. I had to watch all six of them.

I think I also stayed up all night once when I made the mistake of drinking a Jolt cola (which I've since sworn off) on Saturday night. Lucky for me I hadn't yet taken my job as church keyboardist.

I stayed up for nearly two days straight at an anime convention, mainly because of a bad anime endurance challenge, which i completed on a small amount of McDonalds before the marathon and only one bottle of water. I kept from falling asleep by laughing my butt off at how bad of material we were watching, one of the few things we could do during it.

I remember staying up really late while in Disney College because my roommates were always up to something, I could never get to sleep at a decent time. One night though it was not because of my roommates but because of work. I had to work on Christmas night from 7:30 til 4 in the morning. Didn't get home until around five. As soon as I got home I flopped myself in bed and slept for five hours. Yeah that was not a fun Christmas.

I've stayed up a few times all night, not much, but a few times. I think the latest I've stayed up and gone to sleep would be around waking up at about 8:30am and going to bed at 6:00am the next morning. We had this trip planned, right, with a few friends.... but it's a long story. Anyway, we were going to drive during the night, and that way we could do stuff in the daytime to, because the hotel's around there were ridiculously high.

Stayed up till 6am, got up at 5pm to get ready, drank a ton of coffee, we all did to help us stay awake. Left at 7:30pm and got there around 2am..... we ended up sleeping in the van or whatever it was he had. Woke up at 8am, and then enjoyed the trip.

I've pulled one all nighter... but not entirely becuase I had homework all night. I was already up until 2am doing homework. But I wasn't really feeling that tired, plus I had to be up at 5am anyways for swim practice. So I decided to stay up for the rest of the night. Swim practice wasn't the problem in the morning... it the the three straight classes afterward that I have right after morning practice. I think I fell asleep during my second class and my Prof. embressed me... but I was too tired to care. 2 Mt. Dew's couldn't keep me up for those three classes. I went right to bed after my thrid class at 11am. I had been up for 25 hours at that point. And I slept until the second swim practice of that day.

That was the thrid all nighter of my life. 25 hours is tied for second longest (28 hours is my record). But the other two times was a planned all nighter with a club, so it was entirely non-school related. I was having fun the whole night. :)

I'm usually pretty good at not doing any "last second craming". I don't really understand why people stay up so late the night before a test. It not the best thing for you. I always just study little by little, so by the time the test comes around, I know everything, I'm not stressed out, and I'm well rested for the test. That usually why I do so well on tests in the first place.

At university I'd hit the wall at about midnight, so I normally didn't bother trying to learn anything after that.

I guess the longest stint I've stayed awake for is about 36 hours, awake at seven in the morning, go to bed at about 8 or 9 in the evening the following day. It's the curse of flying and airline schedules and I'll have to do it again in a fortnight.

How late I've stayed up ever? Pretty much all night for several days in a row, though I haven't accomplished that since high school. The latest I've been up this semester was actually Thursday, until about 6am (so it was technically Friday)- I had a massive Anthropology paper due. I woke up around ten, so I only got about four hours of sleep. On a normal weeknight I get to bed around 2am, which becomes 4-5am on Saturday nights.

I agree. In high school and even college, I never once found myself in the typical "cram session" scenario you see in so many movies/shows where I was still up at 1 or 2AM with all my books out, jotting down pages and pages of notes in preparation for a test the next day. That would have just stressed me out. I instead just studied throughout the week as usual, maybe a bit more on the actual night before, then just got a good night's sleep and hoped for the best the following day. :)

I was never much of a "last minute" student when it came to studying or getting homework done. On Fridays, I typically had the majority of my homework done by dinnertime so that I'd be able to enjoy the weekend as much as I could, with maybe one or two small things left over to do Sunday evening that didn't require any rushing or such.

Because most students are slackers.

Uhh... 3:00 A.M. I would guess? But since those kind of days are Saturdays, where I sleep 'til 11:00 unless something's on, that's only 14 hours.

I've always enjoyed sleeping far too much to go without it. Not to mention the fact anything more than 16 waking hours has me struggling to keep my eyelids up, and an excess of caffine gives me splitting headaches, which, in turn, cause me to want to sleep.

People slack off a lot cause they realize it isn't that difficult to pass a class. If you do all your classwork, homework, papers, and projects you can pass a class with a B. Even if you do poorly on all the exams. Trust me. I know from experience.

The smarter teachers, however, know students have caught on. In college I've had like two or three professors that ONLY give exams. It's a pain in the butt, but forces you to study and pay attention in class.

Rate My Professor has changed things a lot. Unlike before when you had no idea what you were getting into now you have some warning and choose a professor that's gonna cut you some slack. Those tough professors from the past are becoming extinct as a result. However...you bring up a good point. The majors. When you take general education classes you can definitely get away with picking a slack professor, but with majors a lot of time you don't have any choices. My personal best is about 40-42 hours. I've done that on four separate occasions, all of them earlier on this year. It was my last semester at uni, and there was just too much work to do anything else.

'Course, with me being me, each occasion got ever-more ridiculous. The first time was just doing an essay for a tight deadline, no harm caused there; the second was the same, only I decided on a whim to end the day after my all-nighter by going clubbing...which went about as well as could be expected; the third was to clear some backlog with essays still a month away (I was drunk, and it seemed like a sensible idea), only I just spent all night playing Spider Solitaire on my laptop, rather than actually doing any work. [/facepalm]

As for the fourth...well, let's just say that I had to write 20-25,000 words in 27 hours, and on only four hours' sleep beforehand (a long and stupid story). I did manage it, in the end, but with only an hour to spare, and my sanity basically in tatters. And the worst part? This was an assignment I'd had a YEAR to do. A YEAR. I'm not sure if I should be embarrassed it was necessary, or impressed that I survived.

On the plus side, given that I graduated six months ago - with a pretty good grade, despite all the above - it's pretty likely I'll never have to do that again. And nor do I ever want to.

Looking back, I got much less sleep in Comp Sci as opposed to Studio Art. The private university had me up later than the state university which had me up later than the community college. My overseas project had me up late the most often. Dorm / apartment conditions also had a significant impact on sleep. I think these patterns would be generally expected.

Rate My Professor has changed things a lot.Has it? I had a fairly long college experience, transferring here and there over the years. There were plenty of differences from location to location, but I can't say I noticed any such changes over time. I even ended up back where I started, to finish another degree, and only two faculty members changed - one retired and another took his place.

Unlike before when you had no idea what you were getting into now you have some warning and choose a professor that's gonna cut you some slack. Those tough professors from the past are becoming extinct as a result.I don't know, I'd have to see some data to back that up. A lot of those professors had tenure. They weren't going anywhere just for being tough. If anything has changed, it could be because the tenured professors are retiring and colleges have made it harder for new professors to achieve tenure.

For most classes, there are more students than available seats per section. Thanks to RMP, the reputed easier professor's section will fill up first. If you need to take a particular course, you can still find yourself stuck with the harder professor.

I also haven't found RMP to be all that reliable. It's amazing how far general consensus can swing from your own experience with a professor. Professors I've loathed have had outright fan clubs, while professors I've loved were torn apart by freshmen and sophomores who seemed allergic to learning. I've even experienced this firsthand in the classroom.

However...you bring up a good point. The majors. When you take general education classes you can definitely get away with picking a slack professor, but with majors a lot of time you don't have any choices. There's literally some courses where it's only taught by one professor. And that's usually when you get those "I'm only grading exams" professors.Yep. Depending on the major, this can describe nearly every class past the first or second year. I've had classes where "I'm only grading exams" would have been an improvement.

And thus, was I trapped staying awake.

Manner of speech is one such feature. Monotone, too fast, stuttering, peppered with inappropriate language, impenetrable accent - RMP does provide ample warning, I'll give it that.

Ah yes, those endlessly fun nights of sitting in front of Final Cut Pro with a camera and enough paper to make a small rainforest.

Close to 48 hours, although there were inevitable micronaps in there when I just couldn't hold my eyes open.

The most sleep deprived I've been is during the final few days of my first reporting job. I kept having to go out every night to cover fires and that some arsonist was setting. In about four days I may have gotten a grand total of seven to eight hours sleep. I started seeing things.

There was literally a time in my life when I believed sleep was optional. For a while, I tried to stay up all night at least once a week. No particular reason - I just felt like it. It happened a lot in my first year of college, and it ended up screwing up my sleep schedule for a good long while afterwards, when I slept from 3 AM to noon every day. Finally, all the sleep deprivation started to take its toll on my mental abilities - I was groggy, confused, and frequently in a state of emotional melancholy, and so I switched to a strict sleep schedule of 11:30 PM to 8 AM every night. I haven't pulled an all-nighter since.

When I was a little girl, there was some kind of "sleepover lockin" at the local YMCA, and I basically went all night without any kind of sleep. At all.

The second latest I've stayed up is probably 6 or 7 am.

I stayed up for two straight days once, then I passed out at school.

That can't be too good for your body. I heard that staying up for 48 hours is the equivilant to being legaly drunk.

Despite the potential hallucinations, I can't imagine it killing nearly as many brain cells. However, I certainly wouldn't want to be caught driving on so little sleep; that much is as effectively bad as drunk driving.

I'm a wimp compared to everyone else on here. The latest I stayed up was 36 hours. Why, video games are very addictive that why.

Oh wow! I'd completely forgotten, I once did the same thing. One night back in the late-80s, my hometown's community center did the same kind of thing one Saturday. Everybody had their sleeping bags on the floor of the gym, and I mean we all completely covered that place. There was a big screen set up to project movies on in the evening. We all ended up making them run 101 Dalmations about three times in a row. I did drift off eventually well after midnight, but I think most of us we all up pretty late.

I think in recent memory I've pulled a 24 hour and a 48 hour. 36 hour maybe... I know I've gone 36 hours before but I don't plan to go 4 days much less more than that.

Ah Starbraces... sounds like the con seen is a little too rough for ya. Understandable.

38 hours I think. But I've done things like 70 hours on 3-5 hours sleep. In fact, I'm going for about 30 right now...

ED: Over now. I am pretty sure I blew that class, and thank God it was one of the "fun" ones and only worth 2 credits! I just have to work on doing really well in the rest of my finals I think I can do it with 3 of 'em.
