If the country goes into a severe deflation. (much lower prices for everything)........everyone will be hurt.

Why?...Looks like a good deal..cheap gas, food, housing etc...Well it is...if incomes are going up..but, incomes will be going down... sales.. will go down. that is total money coming in..why? (total receipts will not go up because increased sales will not produce more money...cause..of...lower prices.(yes lower prices, but fewer buyers..why? not enough jobs, and not enough extra money to buy....)..makes sense?...Sure..

So...guess what else will go down...profits...and that is ok..sure...well,,,maybe not...

Decreased sales, decreased profits......means no new hiring?...Yep...no expansion? Yep...no new construction?...yep?..
yep.................more and more unemployment?....yep...so it isn't pretty...suburbs, city, farm...
More poverty..worse than anyone will remember..except those who remember the 30s...and it could be even worse ...................cause one thing existed then, that don't exist now...a sense of community and caring..

think about it.......

Why do you break up every sentence with "... " all the time? It makes what you have to say disjointed and difficult to read.

Even so, I'm losing you with this one. Certain things are getting cheaper (such as gas) but other things keep getting more expensive. In some cases it's a definite buyers market but do people actually have the money to spend anymore? I dunno...I'm trying to wrap my brain around what you have to say but I don't seem to be able to.

Besides, threads like these seem to be more dramatic than they have to be.

Yep, definately. It'd be great if those other prices such as groceries and rent/home mortgages would go down too. But....no, our economy is crap basically.

Little known fact. Sun is actually Swamp Thing. That's why he types that way, to mimic his natural speech patterns. They would vet him as a VIP here but he's too modest.

Yeah, runaway deflation would be as negative in it's own way as runaway inflation, but there's no need to panic about it yet.

We need a new system. The way our consumerist society seems to work now is that we have to work super hard making products and services to make enough money to buy as many products and services as possible so we can be sure to have jobs making products and services. It's a cycle that just keeps getting wound tighter and tighter and making us more indebted and overworked. And it's so complex that if enough little things go wrong the whole thing can go kablooey and blow up in our faces.

What that better new system is, I don't know. If I did I'd be writing it in my manifesto right now.

I need to say one thing right now. I have never been called a "Swamp Thing." I have been called many things in many places by many people. But, never a "Swamp Thing." Thank you Shawn for coming up with something new. :D

I will say I've been enjoying the fact that there's practically no one at the mall and dining restaurants.

I think everything is getting more expensive

It's just that they have more sales left and right, making it seem like everything is cheaper. A few years ago buying basic food items like milk, cheese and bread were reasonable, but today when I go I notice that it costs at least 40% more

My rent has gone up twice in the past year, too

I also notice that whenever there IS a sale, people go insane. I mean literally. My niece were going to go buy candy at the store about a week ago. Why? Because they had a sale. All candy had been lowered in price by 70% (most likely because it was going to be replaced with Christmas candy). And when she gets there, all the shelves are on the floor, ther're police men EVERYWHERE and people are all bloody fighting each other... for candy

Buy what you need, buy a few things you REALLY want, and save the rest. For most of us in the internet-using population, that's sound advice. For others, even the needs are going to be a problem. And I'm not really sure what to do about that.
