I got this from the IGN website. From what it sounds like this movie to me seems it will get a PG rating. But the story itself sounds pretty intriguing and doesn't sound like a song and dance movie. Click the link below the article to see the ONLY pic of Lilo and Stitch released so far. The article istelf is also at the link but figured I would post it here too. What does everyone think of next summer's hopefully original movie from Disney?

Latest on Disney's Lilo & Stitch

News from recent previews of Disney's big animated film for Summer 2002.

2001-06-05

On a recent visit to Disney Animation Studios in Orlando, Florida, I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Lilo & Stitch, Disney's big animated film for Summer 2002. It seems some folks around the 'Net have been equally lucky. Coming Soon and AICN have both scored reports from folks who caught recent a recent preview of the film.

Coming Soon has a report that describes the opening of the film in great detail. They mention that the Disney logo that opens the film is a bit different than usual. The "Walt Disney Pictures" is written in an alien language and little line that goes around the castle blinks with the blip of a "radar."

The film begins in the courtroom of a spaceship where Jumba, an evil scientist (voiced by David Ogden Stiers) has created a creature with amazing destructive powers. The creature's name is Stitch (voiced by director Chris Sanders). Jumba and Stitch are sentenced to prison on penal planet for violent creatures. On the way there Stitch escapes and steals a red police car. He heads for a very strange planet called Earth, which they pronounce "E-arth." Stitch makes it to Earth but his ship crashes in Hawaii.

That's where we meet Lilo (voiced by Daveigh Chase) a troubled little girl whose parents have died. She is raised by her sister Nani (voiced by Tia Carrere). A social worker, Cobra Bubbles (voiced by Ving Rhames) watches over the pair when they come upon hard times and Nani looses her waitressing job. Lilo is desperate and she wishes for an angel.

Nani and Lilo visit the pound to find a puppy for Lilo. There they find a strange looking mutt that none of the other dogs will play with. It's Stitch. He has tucked his two extra arms, fin, and antenna under his fur and is pretending to be a dog in hopes of getting adopted and let out of the pound. They adopt Stitch, the story goes on, and concludes with a heart-warming ending.

AICN's report jibes with this scoop, but gives a few different details:

Stitch, the result of unauthorized genetic experiment 626, is described is described as the ultimate fighting machine with no ability to care, a destroyer of cities.

AICN's source places the opening of the film in Hawaii, where we're introduced to Lilo first. Lilo is swimming in the ocean when she realizes she's late for her hula class. While rushing to her class, she gets in trouble. When her sister Nani comes looking for her, she finds Lilo locked in her room with the door nailed shut. Lilo is lying on the floor in her room, listening to Elvis on her record player – Lilo loves Elvis. There are no traditional Disney songs in Lilo & Stitch, but Disney has licensed 7 Elvis songs for use in the film. Three of the seven include: "Heartbreak Hotel," "Hound Dog," and "Devil in Disguise." As Nani tries to get in the house Mr. Bubbles the social worker arrives to check on the girls. What he finds doesn't instill much confidence about how Nani is taking care of her sister.

We're then introduced to Stitch on the penal ship. He crashes on Earth and wanders onto a busy road where he's run over by a semi. As he is virtually indestructible, he is simply knocked unconscious but his weapons are destroyed. The owners of the truck take Stitch rush Stitch to a nearby animal shelter. There all of the other animals are terrified of Stitch. Lilo wanders out the back of the shelter to find a pet and she can't find any animals in the cages as they are all hanging from the rafters afraid of Stitch. She finds Stitch who has transformed himself into a "blue dog." He intends to use Lilo as a shield against Jumba and his assistant Politely who are hunting him.

That's where the article ends. So again, does anyone have any thoughts?

I forgot to mention that I think it's actually cool that Disney liscensed Elvis songs for this movie. Disney's never really liscensed songs before for their animated films, and the fact they're using Elvis makes it even better. Hey, what can I say, I love Elvis! :)
