Well, its been a while since we had an animated movie airing on The Flicks, but here is one. Plus, its a world television premiere(I think). Garfield Gets Real is a CGI DTV movie that came out in November 2007. Its notable as its the first animated Garfield product since the last episode of Garfield and Friends aired in 1994. Also, the creator, Jim Davis produced and wrote this movie. So kick back and enjoy this.

I saw an ad for it. The characters all look like rubber bath toys. Bleah!
Some characters just don't translate well to CGI.

They just did a lousy job.
If Kingdom Hearts taught me anything, it's that 2D characters can be translated well into 3D.

But still this looks bad. I don't know if I should watch this, Studio DC: Almost Live, or the Fab Five: The Texas Cheerleader Scandal.

If it's written by Jim Davis, the creator, then it should be good. However, the CGI animation is ABSOLUTELY HORRENDOUS for this film. It's worse that the CGI for Casper's Scare School. The CGI is luring me away from watching this film.

I just hope that if this is successful on CN, they don't decide to air the live action movies.

Cool, I've been wanting to see this since it came out but could never get myself to buy the dvd when it cost the same as the season volumes of Garfield and friends.. If its good and now that I've finished the collection I'll probably grab it.

This movie was actually somewhat hyped here in Toon Zone before its release people were following the weekly blog about it but then no one really reviewed it..

Also there is a new Garfield DTV that actually comes out this tuesday called Garfield's Fun Fest, here is the trailer:

Also apparently there is a third DTV coming out in 09, I guess it could also be the CN tv show or a third live action movie (which did great internationally).

well.. if Jim davis wrote it then i'll watch it to see how it goes.
lol, funny thing is some would have the opposite reaction :anime:

That CGI looks like near ratatoing-quality.

John's face looked like it was a puppet as he spoke.. geez.. is 2D really THAT hard to do compared to CGI?

Well, Nermal's voice is definately boy-sounding. As a kid, I remember sometimes being confused if Nermal was a boy or a girl. His voice in the original series was in the middle-ground between a boy or a girl.

If they were going to do a movie in which Garfield is in the real world, how put it in the real world, it make the real world live action? Like the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

I do agree in the old cartoon, Nermal sounded like a girl.

I like the designs of the main characters, none of the new characters though. The voices are pretty good too. CGI looked very good, outstanding if you count it was a DTV. The Plot is actually interesting.

I guess it was just made for kids since even though I liked most of the things that make up the movie while watchig it I was just so bored. Seeing it with commercials didn't help either. I wouldn't say its bad just not entertaining. I'm sure as a kid I could have liked it.

I enjoy Garfield, but the movie was pretty juvenille. What I REALLY don't like was how the real world looked and felt just like the comic strip world. They could've least make them look more realistic.

I like Grimmy's cameo. :)

I've seen the movie a couple of times and the story seems kind of cute, despite the fact that the CGI animation doesn't look good at all. There are examples of 2D characters making the jump to CGI well and unfortunately this movie isn't one of them. After seeing more of the beginning of the movie, I was surprised that the world Garfield and Oddie traveled to was the real world, considering that all of the people could talk to dogs and cats and apparently dogs and cats can become extremely physically fit. Weird. Overall, a movie that can be fun if there's nothing else on.

Actually, I think the live action movie was a little better than this. In terms of graphics and in comedy.

Yea, that's true.

I'm pretty sure I've said this before, but I don't mind LA on CN AS LONG AS IT HAS TO DO WITH CARTOONS. So airing the LA Scooby-Doo movies, Flinstones Movies, Alving and the Chipmunks, or the Garfield Movies is more than fine.

I agree. Despite some of the complaints I've heard about the live-action movie for Garfield, I did find it to be overall enjoyable. The graphics for Garfield in that movie were much better than what they have for this movie and I do remember getting a couple of more laughs from the live action movie than this one.

I know that this aired two weeks ago, but I just had to give my opinion about this movie.

Garfield Gets Real has got to be the worst Garfield movie/episode that I've seen (and yes, it's even worse than the live-action Garfield movie), and quite possibly one of the worst animated film that I've ever seen.

The CGI animation in this film was really poorly done. The background is bland, the characters look terrible, and Jon looks like he's smiling throughout the whole entire film, for some reason. IMO, the only character who had the best animation was Odie, although that's still not saying much. Again, I reallyh like the CGI animation of Garfield better than this movie.

The comedy in this film was not only HORRIBLE, but it was absolutely BRUTAL! I mean, there were so many comedic element in this film that was absolutely unnecessary. Again, I felt that the comedy in the live-action movie was better than this film. It was a horrible decision to give Odie a prop bone, because besides the fact that he has that bone in his mouth for about 75% of the film, we're also treated with the little chihuahuas chasing Odie to get the bone and it takes away most of the time throughout the movie. I mean, I was just BORED! It was just a waste of time.

The writing was absolutely terrible as well. I just felt like some of the lines were written by a ten year old.

Overall, this whole thing was a huge disappointment for me. I really hope the new 2009 series will be an improvement.

1/5.
