View Full Version : Poster Jealousy

Have you ever envied any poster on any forum because of their post count?
James
07-29-2008, 05:00 AM
Nope. But I've envied them for the articulation, opinions or just damn fine charisma. I find post counts rather embarrassing. I'm not exactly thrilled to have my thousands of posts listed by my name - makes me look like I have no life!
James pretty much nailed it on the head. # of posts is something people might actually be embrassed about, simply because of how its undeniable proof of how much time you spend on the forums.
Though I do recall from the earlier years of TZ (back in 2001,02) where having a rather large post count denoted you as someone of somewhat importance or popularity in TZ as that you could actually count the number of people with one hand that actually had 8k or more posts. It was somewhat of a goal to most people way back then (post padding was so easy, one word responses in the Fun & Games forum ftw). But now that TZ been around for a while its not uncommon so therefore doesnt really provoke jealousy.

Same here. All of the posters I've been jealous of was because they seem like they're 10 times cooler than me and they say all of the smartest, coolest, funniest things. I hate reading a really clever post by someone else because it invariably makes me shout "Dang! I wish I had said that!".

When I see someone from 2007 with over 3,000 posts (not necessarily you, Silverstar), I say 'yeesh'. Sure, I'm #47 (just counted for argument's sake), but I don't really post as much as I used to. Maybe, like other people at the top, I'll stop altogether some day.
Besides, there's really nothing to envy. It's just a number. Most posters with such numbers don't really come in swinging, if you know what I mean. I was terrible starting out. The younger you are, and the more posts you make at the beginning of your "career" here at Toon Zone, the more foolish you'll feel when you reach your late teens. Over time, of course, I realized I don't need to get a word in on every conversation... but I'm not quite sure how many thousands it took to come to that conclusion.
What it really is about is helping move a conversation along. Once I stopped asking irrelevant questions, I realized I could get to answering those which I knew something about.
Of course... it does suck to change your name after a few years being known as something else, only to find that people remembered you better for your other name "Toonmaster". I'd change it back, but I don't really want to.

Fantastic post. I agree with it 100%. I do notice that newer members tend to respond to everything in every thread, even if it just amounts to "Yeah, I like that show too!" And that's good for boosting a post count early on, but quality is always better than quantity.

Post count is a terrible indicator of a poster's quality. Especially if they're just post-padders who copy and paste articles without providing any comments of their own or insist on doing something like daily birthday topics for people they don't know.
Of course neither of these things happen here at TZ

I'm amazed by people who have been here a fraction of the time that I have but have post counts that are just as high - if not higher - than my own. I have almost 6,000 posts, but it's taken me 7 years to get there. What do some people do, live here?

I've never concerned myself with post counts. The amount of posts means nothing, as a lot of newbies tend to post short sentences such as "Cool" or "I liked it" just to bump up their own post count numbers. And like Matt said, I can't stand post padders who copy and paste articles that they found somewhere but don't add any commentary of their own to them or people who bump a thread from more than a year ago just so they can say something inane.
I only post when I have something to say. If I have nothing to contribute to the discussion, then I don't post on it.

Nah, not really. I want a conversation out it. I just like to see how some people post things without thinking. I try to think about what I post to make sure that it is clear, and that I get "MY" point across. If I come across anyone else that disagree with my stance, I consider trying to reinforce my stance, and trying to understand where the other poster is coming from. The same applies if I disagree with it, as long as it isn't disguised Flame-bait. I learned a lesson from somewhere else about that.

Not really, no. Back during my early days at TZ (wow, I've been here a long time), I remember high post counts being something to be envious of, but not so much anymore. Now it's a matter of quality. If a person has a high post count and makes quality posts, then it's something to think of because they obviously have something to say.
And I agree with Blackstar; I only post if I have something to say. Often I just like reading a thread without feeling the need to say anything about it.
I like how, besides the first poster, everyone else who's posted in this thread has at least 1000 posts. :p
*checks post count* Hmmm, not quite 3000 yet. Gonna have to find more topics to post in.
Really, though, post counts don't mean much, especially considering how many people have an insane amount of posts on here. As others, I just post when I feel I have something meaningful to contribute.

I'm rather bewildered that people find the time to post that much here that they accumulate 1,000+ in one year. Hell, I've been here almost exactly six years and I'm only a little more than halfway over that count. I'm glad the days are over where big post count= popularity (though that doesn't seem to have helped my standing here any :p).

High post count doesn't mean quality, but actually I've found that some of the best posters around have at least 8,000 posts and higher. By itself it doesn't mean much, but it can be a metric.
Heck, look at Duke, he's sitting at over 25,000. He's not only a good poster, but a mod and a reviewer too. No lack of quality there. William C. Maune, another classy staff fellow, has over 15k.

Have you ever envied any poster on any forum because of their post count?I try really, really hard not to.
I know it's just a number, but I like big numbers. Fortunately I keep myself under a bit of control to prevent any padding. ('Cept on April Fool's Day.)
Whenever I feel like my post count matters, I look two lines above that number to read my join date. I've been posting for four and a half years, give or take thirteen days and two hours, and in that time I've come to enjoy my place in a community and have fun talking about stuff. Racking up a post count is merely a side-effect, not a goal.
In short, who cares if one-year posters have 6,000+ posts? I have birthday threads.
:D

I'm not really envious of post counts. Silverstar accumulated 3000+ posts in over a year, and he usually has something intelligent and important to the conversation to say. I'll have been here for a year as of tomorrow and I only have 300+ posts. Also, I normally don't have much to say in threads, and my posts are usually only two or three lines long.

I don't generally care about posts counts except on this forum some friends and I made. I was the top poster and I was leagues above everyone in posts and it was kinda fun being at the top. But then people started posting more than me and I grew jealous, altho this was a year ago and I've come to terms with it and others have higher posts counts than me.

I can’t say that I’ve ever thought about post counts. I usually prefer to start threads and create discussions than to post in threads and continue discussions. Unfortunately, even though a few of my threads have been successful, most of them fall flat. In that regard, I do envy the people who are capable of creating threads that receive hundreds of replies.
To me post count is everything, when I get enough posts I will become a moderator and then an administrator and then I can make new forums and stuff.

DarkAngel on The Entertainment Board who has long stimulated my entertainment glands - wherever they may be. I envy his ability to love Batman Begins and unfathomable skill and seeking out and countering any of my old hat criticisms on the subject with in a space of two hours or so. Incredible.
Old Billy Maune for his unflappable candor. Wish I had his patience.
Very old Maxie Zeus for being such an articulate brain box - and one of the members who originally drew me to World's Finest through his smart and insightful posts. Would like to have his brains.
Temple Futgate - for his critical opinion on the Drawing Board and his common sense everywhere else. A general all rounder with again the patience of a saint.
Ed Liu, again - articulate and well thought out posts. I admire 'em.
Bird Boy - because he makes me laugh. I wish my mind was such a perfect blend of dirty thoughts and snarky lip.

I apologize for the many times I can come across as bitter, cynical or pessimistic. I just try to be a realistic person, which is not always easy on a message board devoted to niche cartoons shows. I can definitely get aggravated at times at the difficulty in having a fleshed-out discussion in a diverse forum filled with people who are either half my age or living in too big a fandom bubble to really understand how things work in the real world. And for that I apologize. But I've got guys like the Star brothers, Han or good 'ole Speedy Boris to keep me from slipping too far off the deep end.

Usually if you have a lot of posts, especially in a short amount of time, usually it shows that you are a spammer, and probably have a lot of 1 sentence responses or the like. Post count really means nothing, other than as James said, boast how much of a soul you have (for example, I have none because I have over 4K posts and 4 Posts per day)

IMHO it usually shows that the person doesn't have much of a life outside of sitting on the computer all day long responding to every single thread on any given message board.

The following posters I'm genuinely envious of:
James: a big-time over-thinker who can crystallize 'The Big Picture' in ways I can only dare to dream.
Martianinvader: just too cool and funny.
Jeff Harris: another 'Big Picture' guy. His wealth of knowledge blows me away.
Ed Liu: Smart, sharp, articulate, a good writer/reviewer. If he's not THE coolest mod here, he's definitely in the Top 5.
DarthGonzo: a brilliant, to-the-point and savvy guy who doesn't pull any punches. Plus, his posts are just fun to read.
peterg14: I know him from TV.com, and I admire his ability to get right to the point. His posts are never overly long or rambling. And he's funny.
Finally, I'll have to return the favor and say Blackstar: (Yeah, this is starting to seem like an episode of Sammy Davis Jr.'s old talk show, with folks browning each other's noses.) But the guy makes interesting, witty posts. Plus he's another user who cuts to the chase rather than rambling on with the lofty flowery talk like yours truly.

Have you ever envied any poster on any forum because of their post count?
I've never really felt one way or the other about it. I come in and do my thing, then move on to other parts of the internet. I'd probably have a lot more posts here, but I post at so many places, it's tough to do any sort of extensive write up on any one particular site for a person like me.
Though I think in terms of public opinion, in terms of admiration for quantity: In the beginning, when people first started posting a lot, maybe. Now, probably no cuz it's just so common and everyone posts a lot everywhere now.
Generally nowadays people seem to feel that, it's not how much you say, it's what you say and how you say it.
Also, how I react to people on the internet now often depends on my mood. Sometimes I hate everything about the internet. Other times I'm in more of a sit-back-and read-other-people's-posts type of mood. Othertimes I'm much more interactive and will respond more often to different people (particularly when I have a lot of free time and there are fewer trolls online at the moment). It all depends on the circumstance.
Honestly, sometimes I wish the internet were as consistent as television as far as timing goes, but another part of me likes how its more unpredictable than television. Yet another part of me hates how it can sometimes be less reliable than a competing/co-existing medium like TV. That is also subject to be influenced by wild mood swings...

I know people at the Adultswim.com boards who have been there for about 2 years and have 10000+ posts.Look at it this way:
Christopher Nolan directed 6 films within 10 years (1998-2008). His films were mostly critical successes, including one which has the potential to become the third- or second-highest-grossing film of all time.
Roger Corman directed 24 films within 10 years (1960-1969). His films were mostly cheap B flicks.
Which guy would you be more envious of if you were a director?

Roger Corman directed 24 films within 10 years (1960-1969). His films were mostly cheap B flicks.
Which guy would you be more envious of if you were a director? The guy with the bigger house. :p
