View Full Version : Favorite First Wave CN Studios Original?

You know, seeing the viral promos for The Secret Saturdays got me to think about the previous CN originals. Everyone has their favorite CN original, so why not make a poll? Since I can't put all the series in the poll, I decided to split it up into groups. This poll covers the first generation of Cartoon Cartoons. Then, the next month(or month-in-a-half), I'll post the next thread.
Also, the polls are limited to shows made at Hanna-Barbera/Cartoon Network Studios. So, no Warner Bros. Animation shows.
With the introduction out of the way, choose which show is your favorite and why. And if you can't choose one, then explain why you like them all.

Although I prefer Courage at this point, Ed, Edd n' Eddy was the show that got me to Cartoon Network. It was a funny, absurd show that still makes me laugh. It was one of the first shows I watched, and got me hooked into watching Cartoon Network (I really didn't watch Nickelodeon too much after). Johnny Bravo and Dexter were great too. Never cared for Mike, Lu, and Og; and Cow and Chicken/I am Weasel were basically gone when I started watching CN

For me, it's definitely PPG.
I didn't actually get Cartoon Network when PPG premiered, but when I got to see it for the first time, I was hooked.
Don't know why really. I guess I love the idea of cute little superhuman girls or something like that.

I didn't really start watching CN until the early 2000s. The first show that struck my attention was "Johnny Bravo." I just love that show. In 2003, I would stay up (during summer) until 4am, just to see it.
Other favorites from this era include: "Dexter's Laboratory," "Powerpuff Girls," and "Cow & Chicken."
I didn't discover "Mike, Lu & Og" until it came to Boomerang a few years ago. I started watching it and really enjoyed it.
"Courage" is OK to watch every so often, and I never got into "Ed, Edd 'n Eddy."

The only CC I didn't like was Powerpuff Girls and ones like Ed, Edd, N' Eddy and Courage are some of my most favorite shows. In the end, I'll have to go with original Dexter up to Ego Trip, anything after that doesn't exist in my opinion.

I loved all of the Cartoon Cartoons and I remember when they first came out, but I’ve always felt that “Johnny Bravo” was more amusing to watch. I still enjoy that series to this day, and unlike many other people on this forum, I believe that it got better when they introduced more characters.

Ah this is going to be a doozy.
It's down to four for me: Dexter, Bravo, PPG, and the Eds. I'll admit when I was a kid watching Cartoon Cartoon Fridays, I actually didn't watch too much of Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken, or I Am Weasel. It was all Dexter, PPG, Courage and the Eds. The reason I couldn't watch the other shows was my mom didn't let me. -_- She picked up on Bravo's womanizing attitude and immediately forbade me to watch it. I'm guessing with Cow and Chicken and I Am Weasel it was because of The Red Guy. I watched Courage and Mike Lu & Og too. Courage had it's moments but Mike Lu & Og wasn't wonderful. It had a good premise and good stories, but no jokes. I still watch it on CN Video just for nostalgia though. I also watched Cow and Chicken on CN Video when I got older, and some jokes were funny, and I liked the art, I just couldn't get into it too much. It's still good though. But those four toons at the top of the paragraph were what ruled my days of CN watching.
I'm pretty sure Dexter was the first CC I ever watched. I just love the original series (before CNS took over). The art was magnifique, the characters and stories and everything was perfect. I mean, that's why I love it NOW. Back then I was more simpleminded and liked it for the jokes (the ones that I got). I'm pretty sure Dexter got me intrigued into science and doing experiments. Either that or doing experiments got me into Dexter.
Despite me not being able to watch Bravo, I was able to sneak away from my mom and watch some episodes. And when CN Video came out a few years back I watched episodes their. And I liked most of what I saw. Whether it's the first season (Headed by Van Partible, Butch Hartman, Seth McFarlane, and Steve Marmel) or the second and third (I don't know who headed 'em) that are better, I can't say. They each have their respective qualities. And I've barely even seen the final fourth season (the one produced by CNS), because CN must've hated those episodes with a passion or something. Anyways, I can't explain why I like Bravo, I just do. It's Jeff Bennet as Bravo that made me laugh.
PPG was probably the one I watched most on CN. I don't care if it's girly or not It's definitely one of my favorite shows. I probably liked it as a kid because the art style was similar to Dexter's. I didn't watch all of the CNS produced episodes, because most of them aired on CN Fridays, which I hardly ever watched.
And finally, the Eds. Y'know, I watched the Eds as a kid, but I was never like "ED EDD N' EDDY IS ON!!! ED EDD N' EDDY IS ON!!!" In fact, that's actually what I do nowadays. I like and respect the Eds today because I've realized how funny it actually is. I'm glad I've had this little piece of my childhood stick around long enough for me to watch. Ed is by far the star of the show.
If I had to choose one CC though, the prize would have to go to Dexter. Not only did I find Dexter funny as a kid, Genndy and co's style that they used (in the original series) has influenced my cartooning style in current day.

Doesn't "Sheep in the Big City" belong in this poll? If I'm not mistaken, the series aired somewhere in the late 90s--at least that's what my nostalgia is telling me. ^^;
Anyway, I voted for Dexter's Laboratory. In my opinion the show was full of greatness.

This is such a tough decision... guess I'll have to vote for them all, even if "all of them" only means "half of them".

It will have to be Ed Edd n Eddy, hands down. I still love Dexter's Lab and Cow & Chicken.
ed Ed n eddy was the first cartoon cartoon I watched and I loved it but Dexter, PPG, Cow and chick, Mike, Lu & Og, Johnny Bravo are still my old favorites too

I got Cartoon Network in my senior year of high school, just as Dexter's Lab was really starting to take off. I was instantly hooked on the show. I loved the animation style and the humor. Believe it or not it was all actually pretty fresh at the time compared to the Disney, WB and Nick cartoons I had spent the last few years watching. Even when Johnny Bravo and Cow and Chicken premiered I still stuck with Dexter, taping all the episodes I could. Season 2 was definitely the best season of the show. I liked Bravo and Cow and Chicken, but Dexter was definitely my favorite.
Then Dexter ended (for the time being) and my attention turned to the Powerpuff Girls. I think at the time I definitely loved it much more than Dexter and although I watched Ed, Edd and Eddy when it first started, PPG was definitely THE show to watch. Like Dexter I made a point to tape as many episodes as I could and it was really nice that the show was merchandised quite a bit, something I has wished for a long time they did with Dexter. But by 2002 - when the movie was released - the series was suffering and even though Dexter had returned it too was a shadow of it's former self. So I lost interest in both shows, never getting to see the final episodes of either series. But by now Ed, Edd and Eddy had made it past that awkward first couple of seasons and had turned into something special. But because of the things going on in my personal life I really didn't pay much attention to TV for a few years.
But when I re-discovered Ed, Edd and Eddy early last year I was blown away by just how far the show had progressed. The new episodes were absolutely amazing and when I got re-acquainted with the older episodes I realized quickly how much I really did love the show deep down all those years ago. And then it was like a punch in the gut when I discovered that the show was ending. If there's ever a cartoon I'm going to miss dearly when all is said and done and production has completely wrapped, it's going to be Ed, Edd and Eddy.
Dexter's Lab and PPG are still two of CN's absolute greatest shows, but Ed, Edd and Eddy is still the best thing CN has ever aired, period.

I had actually contemplated voting for “Cow & Chicken”. It may not have had as much substance as the other Cartoon Cartoons and its jokes may have been more juvenile, but I enjoyed watching it back in the day and I believe that it helped popularize the network.

For me, it's a toss-up between the Puffs and the Eds.

You're not alone, Huntsman. I'm one of the few people who actually enjoyed the Kirk Tingblad/Russel Callabrese Johnny Bravos. Carl and Pops were 2 of my favorite characters, and I felt Johnny needed to be seen doing more than just getting rejected by girls and interacting with others characters besides just Bunny (Mama) and Little Suzy.

For me, it was Ed, Edd, & Eddy. This show was so absurdly funny as to how much stuff they could get away with by being so over the top, and the characters were pretty recognizable with Ed being so blissfully unaware at the situation at hand sometimes, Double D being the extremely exasperated straightman with Eddy's constantly failing schemes, and Eddy himself being the short-tempered, scheming, "do anything for quick cash", loudmouth who always got the worst of it. It made me laugh every time.

I did say that the two respective styles of Partible/McFarlane/Hartman/Marmel (Seasons 1 & 4) and Seasons 2-3 had their respective qualities that made them better, but I too think that the Tingblad/Calabrese ones are slightly better. The animation is better, and there's a larger cast for character interaction. On the other hand, the original style used by Partible and his crew had better character designs; they reminded me of most of the H-B toons. It also had a bit more risque humor.

Ed, Edd, n Eddy. Hands Down favorite. While that list is one in a million, and Dexter, Bravo, and Cow and Chicken will always be leaders of a generation, and while PPG will be the sci-fi, fantasy favorite, The Eds will always be the one that makes me laugh EVERY time it's on. A rare cartoon, in which it improved with time, like good wine.
Courage was good as well, more for the horror fans, and had good stories.

For me, it's down to PPG, Dexter, and Bravo. Courage was a favorite when I was younger, but watching it now, it's pretty lackluster. Never really cared for any of the other shows listed.
Revisiting Bravo[iTunes], Dexter[Boomerang OnDemand], and PPG[DVD], I'm going to have to go with Dexter; just all around a bit better than the others. PPG still remains a fun show to watch, and now that I'm older it's much funnier with all the parodies[The Dynamo episode, when the Professor randomly adds: "I built it myself!" cracked me up, and that makes it clear it's an Iron Man parody, adding all sorts of awesomeness to the ep]. Bravo also is still funny, but only seasons 2, 3, and 4 can really compete with the other two shows.
So, Dexter.

It's kinda strange. Dexter has so far outvoted PPG, but it had far less episodes than it...

Ah, the Cartoon Cartoons. Thinking about these give me some good memories. My far-and-away favorite, though, always has been and always will be Ed, Edd, n' Eddy. It's so unlike any other show I've ever seen, and so much better than nearly any other, too. You could probably compare it to the care-free days of childhood stories like those of the Peanuts gang, but would only be wrong in doing so. There's definitely some classic cartoon influence("One Plus One Equals One" just screams Jones-esq to me), but it's more than a tribute show. I can see some metaphors to life's trials and tribulations, but going in-depth to the show would only be a disservice to it. There's just no way to correctly discribe it. All I can say is that there may never be anything like it anywhere else.
Love me some Powerpuff, before the movie and the mediocre episodes that followed, Dexter's Lab, before the unbearably weak revival, and Johnny Bravo, which shockingly I enjoyed all four seasons, with or without Partable. All of these are great laughs for me, but even then, at their peaks or not, I don't think they stand a chance to the Ed's for me.
The only one here I never got into was Courage, and I haven't seen much of Weseal as of late. I liked Mike, Lu, & Og as a kid quite a bit, but it doesn't hold up too well for me, and Cow & Chicken is a bit hit-or-miss overall to me nowadays, it seems. Still would buy it's DVDs, though, no doubt.

My definate favourites have got to be:
Courage the Cowardly Dog
Ed, Edd 'n' Eddy
Johnny Bravo
Dexter's Lab
But I did watch the others when I could, in my opinion, everything was good up until after Teen Titans aired season 4.
