View Full Version : Staying Cool without A/C?

Hey, so my bedroom is in the basement, and most of the time it is naturally the coolest room in the house, until it gets to a certain point in the summer, because, i guess, heat just builds up or something.
Basically it doesn't really have much ventilation. There's a small window that we don't open at ground level, no where nears large enough for an air conditioner. I have a fan, but I'm just wondering if there are any additional ways to cool the room down that I'm not thinking of.
Any ideas, guys?

Take a cold shower.

Fan?
I just recently discovered my room had an air conditioner (HOW DID I MISS THAT) so my temperature problems have been resolved ever since.

Just use a fan, or I guess you could sit with your feet in a bucket of ice cubes:p

I don't know if there is much else you can do. Uhm...cool your head with a freezing pack? Besides the fan and cold shower suggestions, that's all I can really think of.

Sleep in the living room sofa.

I suggest getting a cup of a nice ice cold drink. My house doesn't have A/C either and to get by during the summer, we have fans on and have ice cold water or Seven Up. That usually cools me off a bit.

I must expand the idea of cold drinks. While iced water will work (and is of course the best choice to drink on a hot day), I personally won't recommend sodas, rather drink iced tea - preferably green iced tea.

Fans work wonders. Circulating the air in the room will do a lot to make it feel cooler.

Wow, just thought of an idea. Does the upper part of your house have air conditioning? If so, keep the door leading to the basement open, and maybe place a fan by the door. That way the fan should absorb the cool air from upstairs and blow the cold air back in the room.

You could also get one of those fans that sits in the window like an A/C unit and set it so that it sucks the air outside. That might draw cooler air from inside the house.

get a light fixture fan. Those work the best. They are big and cool air from the top down.

A few fans, and a nice glass of ice cold water. Or sleeping upstairs. I and on floor 2 and my room is the hottest in the house, so durning all of June and July I sleep downstairs, along with the first 3 weeks of August. But thats generally not a good thing to do.

Coils hurt my back even worse on the living room couch. -_- I'm thinking about paying the 8000 dollars for one of those confounded astronaut matteresses. The Temputic Swedish Sleeper or whatever its called. XD

Nudity is the way to go.
Or at least, sleeping half-naked on the bathroom floor (if it's tile).
Cures nausea...
Speaking of which, if you're willing to renovate, switch to tile flooring. I always have to keep an eye on my thermostat because the house turns into a refrigerator when it's set at 71.

Iced tea sounds interesting.
Yes, iced tea is a very good idea. My parents and I buy a 36 pack of iced tea like, every other week. It is very refreshing. Also, I noticed no one posted any psychological solutions. Solutions like (I know it sounds hokey but the work! More or less.), imagining you're in a very cold place. Just keep in mind, the human psyche is a powerful thing.
