Hasn't anyone else seen a commercial that's aired on CN lately that has a little girl riding her bike with her father then a lizard like creature flashes on the screen followed by a blue screen with a website address saying "Cryptidarereal.com" At first I thought it was a normal ad, but something about it'd weird.

I googled this "cryptid" thing it it seems to be some legendary creature like Bigfoot or something. Isn't that part of the premise for the Secret Saturday's show?

The website seems interesting, but I don't see any information about the actual show. I do like how Cartoon Network is marketing the show though.

The only thing about this commercial that stands out to me is the fact the father goes "AW SH-" before he gets attacked. >_>

Well, actually there is a very discrete reference to it on this page on the site:

http://cryptidsarereal.com/topsecret.html?sfx%5Frollover1=%5Bobject+Object%5D

If you read inside the document, it mentions the names Doc and Drew, the mother and father of Zak Saturday. The document also mentions a hairy cryptid with glowing red eyes, which matches the description of Fiskerton, Zak Saturday's pet cryptid.

The way they're advertising the show is really cool. I'm sure they'll end up putting actual stuff related to the show as its premiere comes closer, but doing this thing with secret documents and making it all look like a real thing is pretty original. And the timing for the promotion is good, seeing as how the show is supposedly premiering next month.

It's not that tiny. Plus the writing is in black and the rest of the background is brown. Some sort of writing should stick out at the bottom. Maybe if you adjust the setting on your monitor.

There's some information for it already up on Wikipedia. The style for the show looks pretty cool. Hopefully it won't end up being one of those educational TV shows, since the guy who made it also made Tutenstein.

I found something a little, uh...interesting about the CryptidsAreReal site. The front page has a bit about a Popobawa sighting. Does anyone working on the cartoon actually know what the Popobawa is?

From wiki:

Popobawa is variously described as either a ghost (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost) or ogre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ogre) with gigantic bat wings and a giant penis. At times he is simply known as "Imran". He is sometimes thought to be a shapeshifter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shapeshifting) who looks like an ordinary human during the day. His presence is usually announced by the sound of scraping claws on their roof and a sharp, pungent smell. Different from other incubus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incubus_%28demon%29) legends, Popobawa primarily attacks men and only in their own beds, resulting in many men sleeping outside in streets or on porches after recent reported attacks. He attacks men as they sleep, overpowering them, holding their face to the floor and sodomizing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodomy) them for up to an hour. People who claim to be victims of Popobawa are mostly poorer residents on the island of Pemba (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pemba%2C_Tanzania), though other reports have also come from other islands and coastal Tanzania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanzania). The victims are threatened with repeated, and longer, sodomizations if they do not let their friends and neighbors know of their experience.

Is this cartoon actually going to feature a monster that roams the neighborhoods sodomizing men and forcing them to tell everyone about the experience?

Well, I visit Jay Stephens' (the creator of the show) blog at least once a week, and he is crazy about these monsters. He knows all about them, so he knows what they/it is. Which makes it all the more awesome. And I knew it was a TSS ad as soon as I saw it.

I'm actually a big cryptozoology fan, so I'm really interested in how this turns out. I hope they researched the folklore (or fact, depending on the alleged monster and your opinion), because a lot of it is damned cool.

Of course, a lot of the allure of cryptozoology is that it deals with real life undiscovered beasts, so some of that is taken away seeing them in simple cartoon form, where possibilities are already limitless. Seeing a three-foot frog walking on two legs in real life is one thing (the Loveland Frog, since you asked), seeing it in a cartoon...is decidedly less exciting.

The CG doesn't need to be much better. It's supposed to look like a home video, where the camera tends to be shaky and the cryptids are always moving. Plus they wouldn't need to use better CG for something that appears on the screen for just about 5 seconds maximum.

Cartoon Network seems to have started up another viral campaign website:

http://www.weirdworldshow.com/

The site promotes a show called "Weird World" saying it's coming this Fall. I'm thinking, did they change the title this late in the game?? Then I thought that it couldn't be. Instead, here's my theory. I don't count it as spoilers since it's just my theory.

But I think from this website I can just discover a few pieces of the Secret Saturdays premise. We already know there's a character in Secret Saturdays called V.V. Argost, who's mentioned on the site. And he seems to have his own show called Weirdworld where he discovers cryptids. V.V Argost is supposed to be a villain on Secret Saturdays, so I'm thinking it's the classic "TV show host ends up being evil" dilemma, and this Weirdworld show is a "show within a show". In the section of the chat section there ends up being fan mail fro Zak S, or Zak Saturday, whose a fan of the show.

Makes sense, since the Saturdays' priority is to keep the existence of cryptids a secret. This guy must be trying to expose cryptids, thus making him an enemy.:)

no it just says this fall

I very highly doubt that would happen. Very highly. Did I mention highly doubting it??

I can see why you'd think that. The colors and animation both remind me of Brave and the Bold, and both shows styles give me a "better animated Venture Bros" feel. But there's no possibility for a crossover. The two shows have pretty much nothing in common. Batman is a non-original superhero show and TSS is a CN original revolving around cryptids. Just because they may look similar in style doesn't mean that they'll cross over. Remember, Dexter and PPG never crossed over.

Just saw the promo after Johnny Test. It starts off with the V.V. Argost promo before they show the characters.

It definately reminds me of the Venture Bros. and Johnny Quest, which is a good thing. It looks to be an action-comedy series, so it'll fit in with the new action-adventure block.

I have a feeling the show will debut in October.

Yea, Tutenstein does stink. But the thing is, Tutenstein was purposely made to be educational, that's why it stinks. Most of Discovery Kids' cartoons are kiddy shows that are meant to be educational. Secret Saturdays looks ALOT different from Tutenstein, so different that it looks like it couldn't even be from the same creator. I'm hoping that this is the real side of Jay Stephens' and that the Tutenstein side was only a fluke.

They said it would air on the new Friday night fantasy/adventure block at this year's upfront. Plus, they're promoting it as an action series rather than a comedy, so I doubt it'll air on Har Har Tharsdays, but encores on DAS and/or Toonami (if they still exist) are a possibility.

The one thing I can't help but wonder, in this series, does Fiskerton talk? It's been burning in my mind for a while now.

I hope not. That would be a weird turn for the series. I want this series to be a bit more realistic, and treat the cryptids like undiscovered animals rather than magical beings. If some of them have a few special powers (like the Flashlight Frog thingy that was mentioned), that's ok, as long as it doesn't involve magical powers and revolves more around they're biological adaptations. In that sense, since Fiskerton is just a cryptid, he's just an undiscovered animal, which means he shouldn't be able to talk, because animals can't talk. It's fine for them to grunt or have facial expressions, because that's normal in cartoons.

Although he's supposed to be voiced by Deidrich Bader, so I'm not sure if he does or not.

I feel the exact same way. I love how they're using a style similar to Alex Toth's Hanna-Barbera toons. I loved those. I feel like Cartoon Network is the child of Hanna-Barbera, so it should somewhat mirror Hanna-Barbera. Back in the day, the comedy cartoons mirrored H-B's comedy cartoons in their style. But action toons like Megas XLR, and Ben 10 didn't mirror H-B's action toons. Instead, they tried to take on a more anime-esque look. I wish that the style had been derived more from the H-B action toons like The Secret Saturdays. I mean, Samurai Jack didn't follow the look of Alex Toth's toons, but it's look appealed to me because it was an action toon that mirrored the style of Hanna-Barbera's "flat" comedy toons like the Flintstones or Yogi Bear.

We don't know for certain if Doc is actually African-American or merely a Caucasian with tanned skin. If it's the former, then that would make Zak a mulatto. Weird World Faithful,

I urge you not to believe any of the unfounded lies coming from the so-called Secret Saturdays. They seek only to make a villain out of me. I am a simple showman. My goal is to entertain and enlighten.

In truth, the Saturdays are just a family of super-rich troublemakers who think they're above the law. Sadly, they're the ones who are actually endangering the cryptids of the world. Heed my warning, Weird Watchers, do not trust the Saturdays.

According to a new ad, Secret Saturdays premieres October 3rd at 8:00PM. Also I caught the tail end of another little ad that ended with the date 9-3-08. Anyone see the whole thing?

Star Wars premieres the same day. I'm guessing that means that's the day the fantasy/adventure block starts. Batman will be added later on, with either the block being half an hour shorter until then, or another show taking its place until then (I'm hoping it's Jack, I keep missing it on Saturdays).

I know. So I'm guessing the schedule will be:

7: Alien Force
7.5: TSS
8: Clone Wars (Clone Wars supposedly has 1 hr episodes)
9: Hopefully Jack until Batman premieres, but they might not even use the extra half hour until then.

I saw it, it had three Clone Wars-looking spaceships flying into a huge mothership shaped like the CN logo. It then cuts to the 09.03.08 caption.

Pretty interesting teaser.

Wait... I'm confused. Why would it say 9.3.08 when both Clone Wars and TSS are premiere 10.3.08?? The action block couldn't start on 9.3.08 with Alien Force being the only show on it?? To top it off, 9.3.08 is in 3 days. :p It's not even a Friday. Typo much?? That's a big mistake on CN's part.

They advertised the event having the premiere of THE LAST EPISODE OF ED, EDD N EDDY EVER, even though there was at least one episode left (the one from the Lost Eds marathon).

Oh, yeah, but that's more understandable than this. If the commercial really did say 9.3.08 instead of 10.3.08, than there are going to people anxiously waiting in front of the TV for the big surprise, only to find that they're a month early. :p

I don't know, if the movie really is the start of the series, it would only make sense to show it, split or not. Not only that, but the movie's poor performance pretty much ensures that it won't be in many theaters by October.

Apparently, the movie was a pilot (or the first three episodes) that was given a theatrical release at the last second, meaning we should be seeing it on TV along with the other episodes. My guess is that they'll air it as three separate episodes with a little bit of extra footage.

I might be wrong, and might be way off base, since I have only seen commercials. If I can describe the Secret Saturdays, it is a lot like Johnny Quest only the heros have super powers, there is a mother figure instead of a uncle / second father figure, and there is no best friend / brother figure.

If you like Johnny Quest, you might like Secret Saturdays.

The family doesn't have superpowers. Zak only has the power to talk with cryptids. Otherwise, the family's "powers" all come from devices invented by Doc Saturday or magical staffs/swords that they found. They have no genuine superpowers, besides Zak.

But Jay Stephens was inspired by Jonny Quest (and other Alex Toth H-B action toons) when he had to retool the "Cryptids" concept.

It is like Johnny Quest in that it is about a family that goes on action adventures.

Well after looking over the promos on TV for The Secret Saturdays, I can state the obvious.

1. Cryptids - Since over on Cafe Toonzone there is a lot of talk about Bigfoot, and the Loch Ness Monster and all the other things that could be classified as Cryptids, it's no wonder this show is taking the idea a real step further and are giving us maybe a look into what a lot of skeptics are calling "Creatures that aren't really quire real but yet we have noted with eyewitness reports." After all if you believe in UFO's and Ghosts and things paranormal then Cryptids are right up everyone's alley. After all if La Chupacabra (the Goat blood drinker) is real then maybe cryptids do exist in real life.

2. The Premise- The Idea is really not a shot in the dark, but definitely makes you wonder if "The truth is out there." and with this potential idea, well anything is possible.

3. The VA Cast. With VA's like Nicole Sullivan (As Drew) and Will Friedle (As technogeek Doyle) in the mix, this one is CN's answer to Kim Possible. After all you have a lot of good talent in this set and believe me, seeing this show push the evnvelope and giving Disney a run for it's money.

4. The Plot - A solid plot and with the VA to back it up I think this show has a ftw potential.

5. Will I see it? you bet I will, after all the animation reminds you of Saturday Morning TV from days of Yore, and has a Jonny Quest and Ben 10 feel to it. But with Bigfoot added.

All in all this show has a lot of potential and from what I've seen, I have this feeling this will be CN's newest hit show.. and watch, It'll last all of 5 seasons before something better comes along. (But hey there's only so many cryptids we know about. But what about ones we don't know anything about? The mind boggles.

I say this one is worth a shot at looking at.. after all if Werewolves are cryptids then it's definitely something to look into.

Maybe they're still undecided whether this will be Toonami or not and they're gauging reaction to the promo to see whether to finally christen it the 5th incarnation of Toonami or whether to make it something brand new.

Most people know by now my preference: 5th version of Toonami. But we won't know for certain until we get closer to October. We should know . . . about two weeks before the block's launch at the latest.

Now that it has been shown that Zak can talk to cryptids, I'm wondering again if Fiskerton can talk. It might be just Zak, but I think it would be cool if he talks.

I don't think he'll talk, he'll probably just grunt. And when they mean that Zak can communicate with cryptids, I don't think they mean that he can actually speak with them like Eliza Thornberry can. Remember in the sneak peek, when he was communicating with that one cryptid, he wasn't really speaking to it.

I don't really like the idea of Zak being able to speak to cryptids. I mean, the reality of it is, cryptids aren't MAGICAL creatures. They're only animals that haven't been discovered or proven to exist in science. That makes them normal animals, only some of them might have special biological adaptations. If Zak can communicate with cryptids, he should be able to communicate with ALL animals. Think of it this way, let's say that the species of animal that Fiskerton was discovered and proven by science. That would mean that Fiskerton would no longer be a cryptid, but a recognized animal. Would that mean Zak would no longer be able to communicate with him?? Or let's take another example. Let's say that the penguin was never proven to exist, only rumored. That would make it a cryptid. Would that mean Zak would be able to communicate with penguins?? That's just one technical issue I wanted to point out.
