TV Critics Tour: Lucas Brings ‘Clone Wars’ To Cartoon NetworkTwenty-Two Episode Animated Series Debuts in August By Linda Haugsted -- Multichannel News, 7/11/2008 12:59:00 PM

Beverly Hills, Calif.—Cartoon Network is promising Star Wars fans the equivalent of a new movie every week with its Clone Wars series, executive produced by George Lucas and debuting later this summer.

The 22-episode, high-definition animated series, set for an Aug. 10 debut, will follow the action launched in the theatrical film.

The network treated TV critics here to an experience fans would have killed for: an advance look at the first full episode on big screens with surround sound. (Spoiler alert: The episode features amazing color-saturated images of Yoda traveling to a rendezvous on a distant moon in an attempt to convince the aliens there to allow a Republic base on the planet. Meanwhile, an evil protégé of Count Dooku attempts to prevent the meeting, leading to battles between clones and Yoda and his three-man escort.)

Supervising director David Filoni, who at 34 wasn't even born when Star Wars was originally released, said he was amazed at the number of stories the creators couldn't get around to telling in the first Clone Wars series.

A veteran of 2-D animation, Filoni said this animated series has allowed him to render a greater number of clones and a greater variety of types of battles. And, unlike the theatrical films, series viewers won't have to wait three years between episodes, he noted.

Clone Wars will anchor an evening programming block that will also include Batman: The Brave and the Bold from Warner Bros. as well as the returning series Ben 10 (Alien Force).

I personally can't wait for Clone Wars to begin.

Woah, August 10th. I thought the show would come much later, like in October or November.

I guess that makes sense, since the movie comes out on the 15th

Wait, i'm confused. It's gonna debut on Sunday. Is that a 1-Time thing, or is this where it'll be airing all the eps, cause wasn't it confirmed for Friday (Or is that what we assumed)?

No, the action block is for Fridays.

Yea, I definitely thought it would be coming out a few months after the movie's release. But hey, the earlier the better I suppose. If it's premiering on a Sunday, than I suppose the action block might be starting up the following Friday.
Just one more thing, is this series coproduced by CN, is it a CN original??

Wait, it's premiering next month...and Cartoon Network hasn't promoted it yet? What the freaking hell? I excepted a September or October release, to give all the Star Wars fans a chance to see the movie before getting into the series. After all, the movie is supposed to lead-in to the series, not the other way around.

now that I think about it, they didn't really promote any of their accquasistions this year until it was within 2 weeks (Total Drama Island, George of the Jungle). I guess CN treats it's accquasistions like [AS] does it's anime :-p

They did that last year too. They didn't promote Storm Hawks until a week before it's premiere.

Ok, now I'm pretty sure the Friday action block is premiering sometime in early August, seeing as how http://www.dccomics.com/comics/?cm=9994 says that the Secret Saturdays are premiering in August. In fact, there's a promo on Cartoon Network "subliminally" promoting it, and a website at http://cryptidsarereal.com/. You can tell that website is for the Secret Saturdays because at the bottom of the page there's the Cartoon Network copyright. So I'm guessing we'll be seeing Brave and the Bold sometime during August too, meaning the action block can start up.

Even so, I suppose three shows on the action block until Brave and the Bold's premiere would be enough, especially if they had encores.

I would expect they'll go with a HarHar schedule-like strategy.

Ben 10 Alien Force - The Secret Saturdays - Star Wars - Aquisition (Storm Hawks, Naruto, or KWB leftover come to mind).

Or if it goes 3 hours I wouldn't put it past them to repeat 1.5 hours of content right after them air.

On the flip side... this seems likely.

08:00 - Ben 10: Alien Force
08:30 - The Secret Saturdays
09:00 - Star Wars: The Clone Wars
09:30 - Naruto
10:00 - Naruto / Samurai Jack
10:30 - Samurai Jack / Clone Wars encore

Could be a rebirth or death of Toonami though.

But unless ASA moves to Friday I would expect they'll keep the Chowder and Flapjack comedy hour at 10PM on Friday. We'll just have to wait and see though.

I expect the 2nd schedule (Probably Ben 10/TSS Encore at 10PM tho). Then Toonami can just run an encore of the block, with the 8-9 hour moving to 10-11 (So B10:AF would probably be a better bet at 10PM on Fri) and the 9-10PM hour staying the same.

Well, in an article about the show, it mentioned that CN and WB are paying Lucasfilms for the show, so I guess its a third-party. At the same time, the episodes are world premieres, so I guess an original(although the episodes will be replayed later on TNT).

I kinda wonder how many episodes will be played on August 10th. I'm sure the block will start the Friday afterwards or the week after.

As for promotion, hopefully we'll see it in the coming weeks.

I expect promos for Star Wars and possibly Secret Saturdays this Saturday during the Ben 10 Alien Force marathon and Superman Doomsday. It would make a lot of sense to promote those shows and possibly a new block during that marathon or the movie.

It's hard to believe the animated series' debut on August 10th will follow the theatrical... when the debut of the movie is August 15th. Not to mention the critic doesn't have her math down when it comes to Dave's birthday and the release of the original Star Wars film.

No. The series is being done by the new Lucasfilm Animation department. It is a CN acquisition, which is one of the big reasons the reruns will be on TNT. Both networks acquired the rights at the same time. The main reason CN was sought out is because they did the original Star Wars: Clone Wars shorts in house because George Lucas authorized them to tell some stories that take place between II and III as long as Genndy did the animation.

Yeah, that was my first reaction. It would be weird for the show to debut before the theatrical movie came out.

Okay, I would've thought they would've waited until September to premiere the show, but this is ridiculous: premiering the show before the movie enters theaters? Is CN so desperate for ratings that they'll premiere the show far ahead than expected, in the middle of summer?

Oh, who am I kidding.

The block could probably run with only 3 premires (Toonami and Har Har Thursdays do it, and once Ben 10 AF leaves Fried Dynomite will run with 3 premires), but the question is what would take up the 4th slot, which probably woudl fit as a Narutocore or Transformers Animated

Most likely Transformers Animated, but that could also weaken Dynamite Action Squad. But I did read somewhere that TB&TB isn't premiering during the Spring, but rather this fall...

Well, i'm not saying premires of Transformers Animated (An encore won't hurt it, it'll help it probably). Can you provide a source where B&TB is again premiring in the Fall, cause that seems really doubtful since it was delayed, so it's doubtful it would return back

Looking back at the page, the day the article was posted was July 8th, which is only 5 days ago. I don't know when exactly the article was written, or when the show was delayed either, but I think it must be pretty recent.

The article is for a future TV Guide issue (as stated in the blog post). The article in no way mentions the date, but probably when it's released as some Fall TV Guide, the main page will say (dates subject to change), which is probably going to be the case for Batman, since it was announced delayed by Toon Zone's own World's Finest if i remember correctly

Actually, they have a new article up from about a week or two ago confirming Spring 2009

Confirmed over the weekend, Batman: The Brave and The Bold will be targeted at younger viewers.
Bruce Timm confirmed over the weekend during WizardWorld that Batman: The Brave and The Bold will be skewering for a much younger demographic when the series premieres in early 2009. The show is slated to skew young and be appropriate for the preschoolers market. Characters scheduled to appear alongside Batman include Green Arrow, Green Lantern, The Blue Beetle, Plastic Man, Red Tornado, Aquaman, and more.

An entire toy line for the series will debut from Mattel in spring 2009, around the same time as the show's premiere. The show has been approved for 26 episodes, with the option for another pick-up.

Oh, c'mon, CN, as clueless as it is sometimes, is not going to make TB&TB for preschoolers. That's ridiculous, especially since there pairing it up with shows like Clone Wars and Alien Force. They said that they're making the show more kid-friendly, which doesn't necessarily mean it's targeted for pre-schoolers. When Teen Titans was made, they made it different from shows like B:TAS and JL/JLU because they wanted it to be for a younger audience. But Teen Titans definitely wasn't for preschoolers, was it??

Everyone is thinking that what Bruce Timm meant was that the series would be toned down compared to the PG-13 DC DTV. I don't think a preschool series will air on a primetime block. Let's wait and see before we judge the show.

Well, hasn't stopped Boomerang (Krypto and Baby Looney Tunes anchor 7PM hour I think), and CN has aired Krypto past 7PM before (at least for XMAS special). Krypto really wasn't too bad, and I doubt it would be that tamed down

Yeah, but Teen Titans was not ever said to be "appropriate for preschoolers" ever.

I'll hold off on judging the show, fine. But if the show is completely, utterly inane I'm done. Most of the recent action shows have been pretty good, so I do have some hopes, but I don't like the idea of Batman being toned down to a ridiculous level.

When they said "appropriate for preschoolers" I'm sure all they meant was that there won't be any blood or sexual themes shown within the show. I'm sure we can all live if there isn't blood rolling down someone's mouth after they get punched in the face. And maybe girls like Ivy (if she appears) or Huntress will dress a bit less revealingly. But that's most likely it.
