View Full Version : Would DC's Vertigo series be perfect for AS?

Me personally, I wouldn't mind the Vertigo versions of House of Mystery, Swamp Thing, or even Sandman be made for Adult Swim.

The reason why is because Vertigo Comics are more for the mature reader. So basically they'd get a TV-MA.

Just for fun, I'd like to see Bruce Timm working on a Vertigo toon.

Maybe once Warner Bros. Animation gets its act together. A studio that was once bursting with activity now barely employs anybody.

A studio that was once bursting with activity now barely employs anybody. It would never happen, but I'd actually rather have someone else animate anything Vertigo so we wouldn't have WBA's genericness feeling that they have with designs lately.

Let a Japanese studio produce Sandman and you'd have gold.

Now if they did a Grant Morrison-inspired Doom Patrol series, that would be something interesting that WBA could do. That or a Seaguy miniseries, but no one would understand what they're watching

There is a We3 movie in the works if WB actually gets its act together and makes the damn thing. I still don't know how they would manage to do it without utterly screwing it up somewhere along the line. Probably in marketing since WB is the worst company period when it comes to marketing theatrical animated product.

I never understood why Warner Bros. is so keen on entering the adult animation market but not even utilizing the libraries they have to create new series/specials.

Vertigo titles like the aforementioned Sandman, Swamp Thing, Preacher (wait, isn't a live-action series still in the works at HBO?), Constantine (one that actually has him looking like the character instead of Keanu Reeves), The Invisibles, Y: The Last Man, and 100 Bullets and Wildstorm titles like The Authority, Gen13, or WildCats (not the Nelvana Saturday-morning version) are just ripe for the taking. I would actually kill to see them turn something like 100 Bullets into an animated series. Great concept. It's a crime drama which has ordinary folks with major problems encountering this shadowy individual who gives them a gun with 100 untracable bullets to do whatever they want to with. There are caveats to the rules throughout the series. Something like that made from a respectable American company would be excellent.

Instead, we have shows with talking asses and fast food.

Instead, we have shows with talking asses and fast food.To be honest, that's why I personally feel Adult Swim is every bit as much to blame as Warner Bros. for the lack of domestic action animation on [as]. Adult Swim is simply quite happy with running what they're running - cheap, low budget original comedies aimed at the drunk college crowd. Even now that Futurama is gone and their overall ratings are taking hits all across the board, including Saturday which was at its strongest with Futurama followed by a diverse anime line-up, [as] has a very arrogant heir about them that they're doing everything right, and its the viewers' faults for getting sick of the cheap one-joke shows and dialogue heavy anime - not at all [as]'s fault for not capitalizing on opportunities that exist like domestic action animation or halfway decent comedies like Korgoth.

I'd wager that even if WBA wanted to use [as] as a forum for making more mature action animation, [as] just wouldn't care to go through the higher expense something like that would require when, to them, cheap talking asses and french fries are just fine for relatively little expense.

I could be wrong - [as] may have persued many projects like this without us even knowing, but based on their current attitude regarding the recent ratings downfall, I highly doubt it.

As much as I would LOVE to say Preacher, I doubt it would get past the protestors (which is why I think the movie idea might be in developement hell).

I personally think Fables or The Books of Magic is the best bet. They could even make fun of the fact that Timothy Hunter looks exactly like Harry Potter, right down to the sidekick owl. Who could resist that? Or if they Sandman, they could have Justice League tie-ins.

I want to see an animated Hellblazer series. That would be awesome.

A Fables toon would be great.

I always thought [as] showed Japanese shows and Flash shows because it was cheap and they didn't need many viewers to get the money back in ads. But then Boondocks and Venture Bros exist so that ruins my theory..

Preacher was suppose to be made for HBO, but they pulled it off.

And here you'd think the same network that made Moral Orel and Xavier would fit something like Preacher perfect.

Religious satire/critique/condemnation in animation is becoming an "in" topic. Even Spike's commissioned an adaptation of Battle Pope. Preacher is just a mature take on the subject.

I have asked this very question numerous times over the years.

[as] needs to evolve if it's to survive in the long run.

Programs such as ATHF & SeaLab2021 were fine shows during the network's infancy but it's time to up the ante. Programs such as The Venture Bros. and The Boondocks are steps in the right direction.

You'd think [as] would take advantage of their connections w/ TimeWarner and DC/Vertigo. BTW, what are the chances of Batman: Gotham Knight airing on [as]?

edit: if not Vertigo, then I'd love to see Birds of Prey animated. This property would never make it as a children's program so why not market it to young men?

I think as long as traditional animation remains as expensive as it is that will be tough until we manage to cheapen the methods. Which we can, really, but producers and showrunners still have a lot of glut in their departmentalized animation units. The problem is if a cable network throws $6 million at a series, and it fails, the people in charge are in trouble. Stripperella cost Spike TV a lot and it ended up a money pit. The big four can afford such a venture because everyone watches them and they make millions off ads. AS would have to make absolutely, really, really, really, 500% sure, that this show will without question be a financial success, no second guesses.

You'd think that but this IS Time Warner we're talking about, and Warner Bros. isn't exactly known for being cooperative with its siblings. DC too.
