The toon debuted alittle after Star Wars initial release...light sabers were all the rage. Barbarians were quite popular too...like Conan. I guess they thought it was an unbeatable super combo to make a hero with both attributes.:sweat:

Yep, the sun sword hilarity continues...
Seriously, I think it was just kind of for neato-keen effect, to sell the action for a higher caliber. Ramping up the drama and action that made it somewhat mature. The show was supposed to be even more imposing... IIRC, the original pitch was a nuclear holocaust.

One cool thing about the sunsword was the fact it only works in Thundarr's possession, so it could rarely be used against him. The only time that happened though was in Master of the Stolen Sunsword, when its power was diminished by lightning and needed to be restored at a magic pool of power. As the episode title indicates, it was stolen by a phony wizard who restored it and had temporary control of the sunsword until he lost it, Thundarr got it back, and dipped it into the pool to be its supreme master again.
