I wonder why the part where the chimp says "Like a child, we will spank you without pants" got deleted out. I like the part where Chick P flirted with the chimp though.

For real?! I've been wanting to see that part since the show started, I missed the last two episodes. :(
I hope that chimp who fell for Chick P will go after her.
Was he a tad more different than the other chimps? If he was just another ninja chimp, I don't see that happening.
What did you guys think of the part where Chick P flirted with that chimp?
Ok, what exactly happened? I hope it wasn't anything beyond PG-13.

This was the first episode of "Chooks" that I have watched. I was drawn to the show because it's an obvious parody of the movie "Rollerball" (if you haven't seen it, see the James Caan version from 1975(?), not the newer one).
Anyways, I was mildly amused by the action and humor but not enough to watch again. KO Joe did have a good line ("Is the Doctor in? 'Cuz it hurts when I do this!") but too bad I'd already heard it a dozen times during the promos.
Oh yeah, and my Asian friend thought the term "Chooks" was kind of offensive.

It shouldn't be, though. "Chook" is what New Zealanders call chickens.

Chook is Australian 'slang' or 'lingo' for chickens. So your friend should really think about doing some research on the word before he says it offensive. It's kinda like an African American saying Tigger from Winnie the Pooh has an offensive name.

Well, I'm not entirely sure why she was offended by it. She asked me what I was watching and I said, "Chop Socky Chooks". She replied, "Chooks? That's a nice name." But I don't think she thought it was a nice name.
Furthermore, what's with using New Zealand slang in show that's primarily Asian while speaking English? For example, I doubt they could get away with the word "***" even though it's British slang for "cigarette". If the show featured New Zealand / Australian characters, using the word "chooks" might make more sense. Even if it wasn't meant to be offensive, I could see how someone might think it was, much as in my "cigarette" example.

Actually, she is one of the smartest people that I know. She speaks several languages fluently while I barely manage English and a little German.
As for your "tigger" reference, I hardly think it applies here. Afterall, "Tigger" is typically used as a proper name for a character while "chooks" is used to refer to a group (or perhaps race) of characters. Now, if there were several "tiggers" in Winnie the Pooh and they were referred to as such, you might have more of a point, especially if they were used in some sort of African-American setting, not unlike how "chooks" is used in an Asian one.
Again, I'm not sure why she found it offensive but I did a little research of my own and Encarta lists two definitions for the word "chook":
informal Australian for "chicken"
slang for an offensive term referring to a woman's age or appearanceGiven that and my friend's intelligence, I wouldn't be surprised if she knew exactly what the term "chook" means. She may have every right to think the term is offensive since by definition #2, it is.

Because the word means chicken and the characters are chickens.

Wrong, so wrong. Chooks is not an offensive word, ANYWHERE. It rhymes with the word gook which is offensive to Asians. Your example does not make any sense. You compared a word that may be offensive to some with a word that is not offensive to anyone.
Actually, she is one of the smartest people that I know. She speaks several languages fluently while I barely manage English and a little German.
That's nice but that has nothing to do with what I said. I said that your friend should do research on the word because they say it's offensive.

Wrong again, Bones. They aren't calling them chooks because they're Asian, they're calling them chooks because they're chickens. How many times must someone tell you this? Obviously KO Joe isn't Asian, so that throws your little theory out the window.

I'd say that your friend isn't as intelligent as you think. While the second definition may be offensive to some women, it has nothing to Asians. And let's not forget that there are 2 male characters and 1 female, so once again, the term is not targeted at any of the chooks.

Wrong, so wrong. Chooks is not an offensive word, ANYWHERE.
Obviously, you are the one that is wrong since, as I previously posted, the word does have an offensive meaning according to Encarta.
How many times must someone tell you this?
Quantity doesn't always equal quality. You don't want to believe the word is offensive so you ignore the fact that it does have at least one offensive meaning. Repeating yourself doesn't prove anything.
Obviously KO Joe isn't Asian, so that throws your little theory out the window.
So for a show to have an Asian theme, every character must be Asian? Ridiculous. But I think most people would recognize the strong Asian influence to the show ("chop socky", "wasabi", etc.).
I'd say that your friend isn't as intelligent as you think. While the second definition may be offensive to some women, it has nothing to Asians.
I dunno, she seems smarter than you. For all I know, she wasn't offended because she was Asian or female. Maybe she just knows that the word has an offensive meaning to some and doesn't care for it.
Anyways, feel free to repeat your same argument ad nauseam, for all I care, because I've had my say on the matter. Just don't insult my friend's intelligence anymore. That's definitely not cool.

For all I know, she wasn't offended because she was Asian or female. Maybe she just knows that the word has an offensive meaning to some and doesn't care for it.So now it's not about being offensive to Asians but just plain offensive? Since when is this about your friend's feelings about the word "chook"? It has nothing to do with the show, the characters, this episode, nothing.
Bones Justice, I use to think that you were one of the more level-headed members here but I guess I was wrong. I just want you to know one thing, you aren't making any valid points and if you want to continue making a big deal out of nothing, more power to you.

what does your friend have to do with this thread?
For somebody that doesn't want me to make a big deal out of this, you sure have trouble letting it go.
I thought I was fairly clear in my previous posts but since you asked, I will recap. While I was watching this particular episode, my friend had an opinion about it. As that was part of my experience while watching this episode, I made a minor post-script styled comment at the end of my comments about this episode.
Now, that probably would have been my sole contribution to this thread but two separate posters (one being you) pointed out that the word my friend seemed offended by, "chooks", was in fact either New Zealand or Australian slang for "chicken". My reaction to these comments was something along the lines of "Australian? But there's nothing Australian about the show. No characters appear to be Australian, there are no kangaroos or dingos, and the setting seems mainly Asian."
So I looked up the word in Encarta. Sure enough, the word "chook" is Australian slang for "chicken". But it's also an offensive term to some people in the world. So again, I wondered, why choose the word "chook"? I mean, they could just as easily made a case for naming the show "Chop Socky *****" since, afterall, a "cock" is another term for chicken or other edible fowl. But I also realized that "cock" can be an offensive term to some, so I doubt Cartoon Network would ever allow it. So why use the word "chook"? It just doesn't fit. (I had never once considered that it rhymes with something else offensive until you mentioned it. Afterall, why choose a name that rhymes with something offensive?)
So I posted my reply. I wasn't trying to "make a big deal out of it". Rather, I posted my opinion. That's what these boards are all about.
That said, I don't have any plans to mount a campaign to have the show's name changed. I seriously doubt my friend does, either. I don't have any plans to watch the show again, either. Not because of the name, I just didn't find it all that interesting.

Because they're chickens and chook means chicken.

Is the phrase "making a big deal out of it" foreign to you? You act like it's something you've never heard of, the way you put it in quotation marks ("").

Because they're chickens and chook means chicken.
Not in the USA it doesn't. It's Australian slang. As in, it's a term used in Australia. This is just your way of avoiding the question. I notice that you didn't bother to reply to why they couldn't have used the word "cock" instead of "chook", either.
They didn't choose it because it rhymes with something offensive, they chose it because they're chickens and chook means chicken. You like hearing the same thing over and over again, don't you?
You totally took what I wrote out of context. If you look at everything in the paratheses, I said I never even thought about them rhyming -- "why choose something that rhymes with something offensive?" means that I didn't expect them to do that.
In fact, I thought "chook" was an Asian word or slang because of the context of the show. I didn't know what it meant until I looked it up because I'm not Australian. I watch the show in the USA.
Is the phrase "making a big deal out of it" foreign to you? You act like it's something you've never heard of, the way you put it in quotation marks ("").
I know what it means. I was referencing what you said about not making a big deal out of it. I was actually waiting for briefing to start and typed the response on my handheld, which doesn't allow multi-quoting so I just used quote marks instead. That's what quote marks are for.
"My super smart Asian friend thinks chooks is offensive" is not an opinion, it's a statement.
See? You are using quote marks just like I did. So don't pretend you don't know what they are for.
Furthermore, I said my friend seemed offended. That's my opinion. But even if it was a statement, so what? Posters are allowed to make statements about what they've seen in regards to shows. You don't have to like my opinion. You don't have to like my friend's opinion. I don't care (that's a statement of my opinion, by the way).
Really, you should just let it go.

Because "cock" is slang or lingo for a roster, which is a male chicken. Don't forget that Chick P is a female.

Because "cock" is slang or lingo for a roster, which is a male chicken. Don't forget that Chick P is a female.
That is one definition but not the only one.
Besides, there is plenty of precedence for teams of heroes of mixed gender to have masculine names: X-Men, Men in Black, Mystery Men, Metal Men, etc. All of those teams have at least one female member. Heck, the X-Men have had female leaders and even had a majority of female members on several occassions. The female characters refer to themselves as "X-Man" or "X-Men" all the time.
And again, you avoided my real question: why use Australian slang for a show that has nothing to do with Australia? Especially when the word also has an offensive meaning to some people? But by this point, I figure you probably just don't know the answer. I suppose it's possible that you simply don't understand the question but you don't seem unintelligent.
I didn't know what it meant either but that's what Google is for.
You should have known that it has an offensive meaning then. I tried Googling it and found both meanings without any trouble. It still doesn't make sense to use Australian slang, especially since the show has nothing to do with Australia and when anyone that Googles the word can see that it also has an offensive meaning.
And you know, since you were the one that first brought up the whole rhyming thing, I just want to add that the word "chook" doesn't even rhyme with the word "gook". I have never even considered that being the reason they chose the word "chook" until you mentioned it. And I rejected the idea because they don't even sound alike. The way they always say "chook" is like the word "rook" or "look", not like "gook".
I tried to but you keep on replying to my post.
Aw, you're not one of those people that thinks whoever replies last is right, are you? It's all about what you post, not when you post.
Fine, I don't care, have the last reply then. I figure you'll either answer my question (which is all I really care about) or you'll prove me right that you don't know the reason why they would use Australian slang for a show that has nothing to do with Australia.

No, I'm not like that.

A show doesn't have to be about or have anything to do with a certain country to use it's slang. I don't see why it's bothering you so much.
Okay, I see this discussion is really going nowhere so I'm going to ask both of you to please drop these arguments. It's derailing the thread off-topic and turning it into a 1-on-1 flamewar.
The offending part has been contacted privately, and any further violation of what the talkback is supposed to be about will be handled with further moderating action.
Please resume discussion of the show and episode at hand.
