View Full Version : Firefox Question

This is rather trivial, but it's still bothering me.
I downloaded Firefox last night because Internet Explorer was annoying me once again. I like it so far, but I've noticed a difference while browsing the board. With IE, the titles of the threads are bold if there are messages in them that were posted since the last time I read the thread, and they are normal font when there is nothing new to read.
I've noticed that they seem to stay bold in Firefox. Has anyone else had this happen on Firefox? As I said, it's not a vital matter, but that's how I always knew which threads to bother clicking on....

STOP USING FIREFOX,IT WILL CRASH YOUR COMPUTER...
This message will now self-destruct...well,it will if you keep using FF as your internet browser.Trust me,it caused a virus build-up.It may seem cooler and let you get on many a browser in on,but let me tell you it cost me a hundred dollars to get this sucker back in use.Your best bet is getting back to good ol' Internet Explorer as soon as you can.

Well, this little bugger is the reason that I switched in the first place:
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a115/wedom/untitled.jpg
This message has been popping up more than usual the last few days. It doesn't show up on the pages I regularly visit, but the instance that allowed me to take this screen shot occurred simply while trying to look at an item's page on Amazon.
It bothers me a bit because I had a lovely little malware attack last weekend, and although I found a fix and seem to have purged the bug from my system, this makes me wonder if a few setting and files got corrupted. If the bug isn't 100% gone, then it's probably 99% gone because it hasn't done any of the crazy stuff it was doing back when I was grappling with it.
Has anyone seen that message on IE and know what to do about it? If you want to try and recreate the message I got, try clicking on the DS Lite links on the main page of WiiAlerts.com. The image above came up when I clicked on the Crimson and Black DS and it brought up Amazon. It doesn't seem to happen when it brings up Buy.com (which is what it did with the Cobalt and Black DS link.
Anyway, I'm still shifting between the two browsers. This thread thing on TZ really irritates me.....I just don't deal with changes like this well. :p

The read/unread font thing works fine for me. Although if you read a thread and then use the back button to go back then the thread is still bold. If you go back using a link then they're OK. If you use the back button and then hit refresh, that should solve it.

Firefox can't prevent viruses in the same way your car can't fly. It's not designed to. Viruses enter your computer through dodgy links and e-mails. Firefox doesn't scan for viruses, that's an anti-viruses job. That's why you should always use an anti-virus and firewall software. Relying on your browser to prevent virus attacks is like using an electrician to fix your broken sink; which explains why mine is still leaking :p
Although I'm a fine one to talk. I use Linux and fly by the seat of my pants

Well, I'm halfway there. I figured out that the titles will go to normal font if I click on the "last page" link or the last page number (if they're all listed). However, if I close out of the window entirely and come back, they all go back to bold. It must not remember what I did from one session to the next.....
EDIT: I might have it now. It seems to have a better memory now that I told the program to remember my password. Perhaps I was just coming back in a logged out status every time and I didn't notice....

Aye. if you notice when you log out, the page says "all cookies cleared". So closing and opening a new window will start a fresh set of cookies, and, assume you haven't read any threads.

Quoted for truth. By most accounts, Firefox is safer than IE. There are those who will argue that this has more to do with IE's greater market share making it a more tempting target for hackers than any inherent superiority in Firefox, but there is quite simply NO evidence that Firefox is actually any LESS secure/stable than IE.

Well, you didn't have to use a quarter of your electric bill to get it fixed pal.I had my firewall and AVG wear activated.Mine is barely three-years-old and I've been using it without a single problem until I switched to FireFluke. That's what the woman who's looked at my family's computers successfully for the last ten years said. She hasn't stirred us wrong yet.Everything she has ever said about what our computer does turns out right,as we've taken it to others after her and they took a longer time discovering the problem. She also predicted I would have to get a replacement for this computer within the next year and right now I'm saving up for a new computer. So,yeah,I'm not being silly and untrue.

There is evidence to suggest that even though Firefox is not necessarily more secure than IE (it's often subject to the same viruses), patches are released within days (compared to, in some cases, months for IE). This is what makes Firefox a better browser security wise.

Well, since your the first person not to slander me about my long (albeit-not-qualified-work-in-a-computer-store) knowledge on computers,I'll answer you.
It may have been something else. She said the fan in the back of my PC wasn't cleaned out.Anyway, just want to help prevent anyone else getting a virus or anything if I can.

:mad:Just because you download every single virus available on the internet, does not mean Firefox is responsible. lol
"I had my firewall and AVG wear activated"
AVG wear? Is that a clothing line? Never heard of it.
Anyways, Firefox is not responsible for your viruses, you are. Firefox does not prevent you from downloading the viruses, no browser does. You need to practice safe web surfing and stop downloading those viruses and blaming your browser on them.

All I know is what Mrs. Sandra (my computer tech person of 10 years) told me MIGHT have happened.AVG is a type of virus protection,my friend. The 'wear' was only added by my own desire.I could have said AVG 'stuff',AVG 'parts'.I'm not a computer fixer-upper expert,I KNOW that.Flashing your fancy little accomplishments around tells me nothing."I major in Computer Importance and support the mediocre labs and yadda,yadda,yadda..." isn't the same as me taking my computer down and getting it back in two days good as new by someone who hasn't failed me yet for a decade.

Well, personally, I live and die by Firefox. I switched from IE over 6 six years ago and I haven't gone back since. But having Firefox doesn't automatically protect your PC from viruses. No browser will. You still need to have virus protection, regardless of what browser you're using. There will be a Chuck E. Cheese on Mars before I ever go back to Internet Explorer.

Seems to work fine for me. The whole big advantage for me is that firefox is OS (open source), and to me open source will always be more secure. This will hold true simply for the fact that I can, if the chips are down, fix firefox myself. Not to mention many eyes make shallow waters.

When I fix a computer loaded with viruses it generally takes me about 6 hours, not 2 days. The last house call I made the PC had 8 Trojan viruses in it, one of then was a Trojan downloader. And it didn't have Firefox. I fixed all of the problems without formatting the PC. And "AVG 'stuff',AVG 'parts'" is just as silly to say as "AVG wear". Its AVG. And its not the best antivirus protection you can have. There are so many better ones out there, especially since you are prone to downloading viruses to your PC.
By the way, did you know that you have to have a space between every period and comma? Use proper grammar, really difficult to read.

As a IE user who recently switched to IE7, it's a lot faster (like 2x speed). Plus the toolbar where you can add search engines is really nice (i kno you can get it for IE7, but it's nice here)
However, I don't like how the bookmarks has a random folder at the top (weird like that).
Otherwise it's good
Oh, but I don't recommend using uTorrent with it. First time I had Firefox, I got an error with uTorrent. I shut down my computer, and I got a weird error message when I turned it ack on (It deleted some Firefox problems).
But it works ever since I did that.
I think it happened because I still have IE7 (parents don't adapt to change well), and I heard the 2 don't work well when both installed)

Well, aren't we just humanity's gift to all technology!
For the record,it doesn't matter if it's a day or a week. It's quality that counts and how long that quality can thrive. That's what matters. And grammar, which mine just happens to be fine by the way,is not the 'subject' of this conversation.

Ahem...
STOP USING FIREFOX,IT WILL CRASH YOUR COMPUTER...
That's what the woman who's looked at my family's computers successfully for the last ten years said. She hasn't stirred us wrong yet.She either doesn't know everything she thinks she does, or perhaps she's given you a simplified explanation of whatever went wrong, which you didn't completely grep (no shame in that, btw).
She also predicted I would have to get a replacement for this computer within the next year and right now I'm saving up for a new computer. That prediction is what would have me worried. What exactly was her explanation for that? Is she going to be putting this new computer together for you, by any chance? It sounds slightly suspicious, and I'm surprised no one else has pointed this out.
By the way, did you know that you have to have a space between every period and comma? Use proper grammar, really difficult to read.Technically, the lack of whitespace following his commas would be considered an incorrect usage of punctuation, not grammar. You could have pointed out a better example of unusual grammar.

Actually, I started the thread and my question was answered after the first couple posts. The mods could close this thread if they wish and save everyone the pain. ;)
