So I had turned in my homework in math class yesterday. There was this one problem on it that you had to be creative on. At first, I didn't know what to do for it, until I thought of cartoon characters. PERFECT!
My teacher read out loud to the class my homework problem, which was:
"Popeye and Olive Oyl are enjoying a relaxing cruise through the sky on a small airplane they rented. Suddenly, Popeye notices that the engine is running out of gas! He thought he had fueled the engine with LOTS of fresh spinach before they left. Turns out Bluto replaced that fresh spinach with E.coli-infected spinach! So Popeye checked the altitude meter, which read 2,080 ft. Olive, using her smarts, measures the angle of depression to be 60 degrees. Quick! It's up to YOU to find the line-of-sight distance to the ground before they crash!!!"
The whole class ended up giggling and giving me a round of applause at the end. My teacher said it was excellent and that it was the best made-up word problem she had read all day. Pretty cool, huh? :)

Congrats on your paper.
Sad part is...I have no idea what the answer would be.....

Okay, let me try to break this down...
It's simple trigonometry. First, start with a right triangle:
http://www.mathopenref.com/images/triangle/hypotenuse.gif
Now flip this triangle upside down.
The altitude, which is 2,080 ft, would be the vertical leg. The line-of-sight distance we're trying to find is the hypotenuse. The angle of depression (where the plane is), which is 60 degrees, would be the angle connecting the horizontal leg and the hypotenuse.
So first set up the hypotenuse as x.
Then use the trigonomic ratio sine for the angle, which equals:
side opposite of angle 60
hypotenuse
So it should be set up like this:
2,080 = Sin 60
x
Sin 60 can also help you. Then just cross-multiply.
1
Now, you should get 2,080 = x(Sin 60). To find x, just divide 2,080 by Sin 60.(Note: you'll have to use a regular scientific calculator or one on the computer to find x.)
If you did it correctly, the line-of-sight distance Popeye and Olive have to travel to the ground is about 2,402 ft (rounded).
Hope that helped! :D

neither do I. Damn me not taking a college math course.
I wonder... stargirl did you make an answer for your question?

ummmmmm...yeah.....see this is why I watch Cartoons, so I don't have to know stuff like this........
I suddenly have this look on my face like Beavis and Butthead would.......

No wonder I didn't know the answer. We didn't get into Trigonometry yet in Math class.

Ya, i think i;m learnign this stuff right now, but I still didn't get it (we've been going over sin and etc). That was in Geometry (Sophmore class at my HS)
Heh, E-Coli is a Robot Chicken sketch waiting to happen (except the end involves rape)
