Last week, Light met with Raye Penber's fiancee and unknowingly found out how much information she knew about the case. What will happen this week?

As always, please keep major spoilers out of this thread.

wow, i love how this translated to the anime. the last five minutes was just excellent dub work. if Brad Swaille doesn't get more work after this series, then something's very wrong.

Light really can lie very quickly, and in a crafty manner. He managed to fool Raye's fiancee all the way to her death. I thought it was awesome, yet creepy, how he tells her he's Kira, when she asks why he keeps looking at his watch, before she dies. L, on the otherhand, is also very crafty, and he is smart enough to have the investigators use fake names and IDs.

I actually kinda like how Light found out her real name in the live action movie better, since tricking her into showing her ID just seemed a little far-fetched considering how overly-cautious she'd been about that sort of thing up until then. Though, in the movie, Light didn't have the time constraint he did here.

In the live action film, Light just checked Raye Penber's wedding registry :P

On a less insane note, Matsuda is so dorky XD 'ZOMG NEW BELTS WTFBBQ!!11'

I had a feeling that they would try and throw us off the idea from last time of just Light immediatley offing Naomi whenever he got the chance, but figured she wouldn't last too much longer, knowing too valuable information about Light to be allowed to live. So instead they extended her screen time all the way through this episode by giving Light a fake alias last time and him having to try and find some way of getting her actual name. I have to say it way pretty interesting seeing Light in a near panick situation of trying diespratley to coax lie after lie in an effort to get her to reveal her name, and thought rather sad I did like the ending where he finally got it made her walk to her own suicide. Rather cruel kid Light but hey we knew that didn't we? Now we know the Penber aftermath won't really bite him back too much (as of now anyway) and if you thought Ryuk's laughter was creepy before, see it in this episode. Meanwhile we get to see what L's assistance really looks like as the cops get fake IDs. As in the last episode, the least important/ interesting plot but should be leading somewhere. So now what will happen with Light going on and something about more Ryuk information? Next time should be rather good, or at least hopefully as good as this pretty decent ep.

I think Naomi's death is the saddest so far in the series. It was by chance they met each other, and it looked like she might have gotten away if it wasn't for the fact that Ryuk laughed everytime Light asked for her name. I wish she did survive. It seemed like they wasted a potentially good character.

Doesn't Naomi have a bigger role in the live-action movies?

Just when you think that Light's about to meet his end, he manages to pull victory from the edge of defeat. I feel sorry for Naomi, but it really is impressive to watch the inner workings of Light's mind, even if it is evil. This episode was one of my favorites when I watched it in Japanese, and it is also one of the episodes that made me feel the worst, even if Naomi is just a fictional character. Next week's episode is also one of my favorites. Potato Chips of Doom and Death! :D

I soooo want Light to suffer after this one. Naomi had him dead to rights, but she let down her guard for just a moment because she believed Light really wanted to help her. Seems you really can't trust anyone.

Sad ending, but not altogether expected. What will it be like for Light, though, when his time of reckoning comes ...

First half of episode thoughts: Light got owned.

Second half: ..... damn.

Wow, I honestly expected her to last more than just three (I think) episodes, so it actually came as a complete shock that he managed to kill her so quickly. From the moment that Light revealed to Naomi that he was Kira, all the way to the To Be Continued screen, it was just pretty depressing to watch. Especially with Light mocking her to her death. Youch.

Well technically...
Naomi didn't complete her suicide yet. For the first time, I'm also reading the manga chapters(at Volume 4 at the time of this post) before watching their respective episodes. At this point, I'm guessing there's something about the Death Note that Light either overlooked or doesn't know(perhaps a rule yet to be mentioned in either the anime or the manga, and I've already seen lots of rules mentioned so far).

And I'm also looking forward to seeing L's Big Brother in animated form.

Anyways, it was also cool seeing Watari's true face. A slacker-looking dude and an elder gentleman, what an interesting crime-stopping pair.

Light could use some eye drops, BTW.

Light's the main character, thus the show is staged in such a way that it would end if Light was caught, thus we catch ourselves hoping Light will make it through the latest dilemma. Then we see the results and think "Oh shoot....what have I done? Why did I want that?"

This was definitely one of those moments. Again, brilliant show.

Light sure can string some impressive lies but man he is one demented guy.

That ending was heart breaking and sadistically creepy.

"I'm Kira" just pierced through everything. You'd need a butcher knife to cut through that intensity.

The cast is really coming into their own. While Swalie doesn't always sound great as Light that moment really sold his performance. He could stand to tone down the crazy a bit though. Kira's not suppose to sound crazy quite yet.

I greatly look forward to genius vs genius. It's a bit dull at times but it's hard not to hang off every word. The show downright takes my breathe away.

My settements exactly! :( Light finally gets someone that is an actual threat other than L, I was hoping when I first saw her last week that she would stick around a little while, but alas, Light is just far too...crafty! I was hoping Naomi would start heading to the station double-time after one of the numerous times she tired to part ways with Light, I mean, he was definately giving of a creepy vibe from my POV, I'm suprised she didn't take more of a 'why is he still following me' approach.

Yes, seeing the way his mind works & all of that is impressive, but it doesn't make me like him or think he's any less of an SOB.

The whole point is that she was using emotion. L is using his head.

As I said waaaay back at the beginning, this little arc is my favorite of the opening just because of all the nuances (plus of course, she's real cute). But I have to say I preferred the manga scene. In the manga he just seemed so desperate to me at the end, it was nice to see his layer of confidence pierced a little as the pressure mounted.

Still this one was done well.

as grand as light is...didn't you ever wonder in many of these predicaments why light only resorted to death (I mean given its a death note), but why not prolong someone's life. If the death note can determine the terms of death if a name is written in 6 minutes why not use the death note to make a person live instead of die? well I should say prolong the life to beyond the 6 minute limit. Perhaps that would be just like playing a god...but if he could kill in theory by doing that he could prolong his life and manifest himself as god...I guess in that case it would take the fun out of death note...
I remember reading the volume in which this death happened and my mouth was just wide open at light's crafty skills...still the question stands...eh well...

The Death Note will not let you extend extend your own life in any way, unless you are a Death God.

The Note isn't some Deux Ex Machina. It is a killing tool, nothing more or less. You can't argue or reason with it any more than you can argue with an Axe.

This is edging into spoiler territory.

Once a person's name is written in the Death Note, that person's death can only be delayed for up to 28 days. So if Light wrote his own name in the Death Note along with "Die peacefully and as God of the New World at the age of 120," he'd die after only 28 days.

One question: why did light have to be all arrogant and pompous after he finally got Naomi to reveal her name to him? It wasn't enough that he went ahead and ended her life but he also had to put in his 2 cents in just for kicks.

One question: why did light have to be all arrogant and pompous after he finally got Naomi to reveal her name to him? It wasn't enough that he went ahead and ended her life but he also had to put in his 2 cents in just for kicks. The reason why Light would do something like this was because even if he did reveal to Naomi that he's Kira, there's nothing that she can do about it, due to her becoming yet another victim of the Death Note (with the written information of her contemplating suicide overpowering her need to inform the police about Kira's true identity). In other words, Light is proving L's belief that Kira is somewhat childish.

Eh...that doesn't really seem specific enough. I don't think he's ever tried anything where he doesn't specify the cause of death before.Remember if you don't write a method of death in the deathnote, the default is heart failure (I actually don't remember if this is a spoiler for anime-only) so it's a personal style change. She's pretty damn smart and this way he can preserve more deniability, as well as making sure her body's not found for a while. However something a bit better would have been to allow someone to know she was suicidal. Then it looks even less suspicious.

I still don't know if it's childish immaturity or just blinding arrogance, or if arrogance is itself a form of immaturity. Light is only half as smart as he thinks he is, but he's still dangerous because he really is pretty damn smart.

I'd hardly call a megalo maniac who wants to play god 'awesom'.But some people would. If I'd met Genghis Khan or Alexander the Great I know myself well enough to realize that their accomplishments and aura of success would make me follow them perhaps closer to a level of religious fanaticism. Light's no Ghenghis Khan, but he having incredible powers lends itself to a feeling of euphoria for his followers (by following X, I become invincible) that is not unknown.

And since it's just a story it's easier to go with that feeling. Personally I hate everyone in this series!

A gamut of emotions. Light from worry to desperation to relief to cockiness. Naomi from concerned thought to seeking support to complete and utter shock. Ryuk laughing all the way as the scene unfolds before him. Viewers from vested interest to curious debate to either admiration over how persuasive Light is or disgust and anger over taking out an innocent 'interferer.'

I still think Naomi fell into the trap a little too easily, though as someone mentioned earlier in the thread, she was basing her thoughts on emotions, while Light was actually thinking his way through.

So close, Naomi. So close.
