On a chat, some idiot insisted that "Invader Zim" was "satanic", and I wound up sucked into a long, long, long, long, LONG religious argument with them over AIM. It didnt go anywhere and in the end they went to bed and I blocked them. They insist that every molecule of matter in the universe MUST be either absolutely good or absolutely evil... no grays, no neutrals, no room for personal opinions... only factual right and wrong and of course, he just knows everything that`s right and wrong.
People like that are everything wrong with soceity.

I hear ya. I've had dealings with people like that when I first got on the Internet, not specifically about religion but over some topic that the person clearly had a twisted view on, and you never, never, never spend your time wisely in one of those arguements. It's best to just learn to ignore people like that and let them go on with their lives. Either they really think that or they are out there being contentious cuz they think its fun to get under somebody elses skin.

People like that are really a waste of time and energy. They always get to me, but the best thing to do is what you're doing, ignoring them. There are always people who take things to the extremes....I mean, look at what's going on in Afganistan really. There are always people taking things way too far, and religion seems to be the main thing. I've heard my fill of Harry Potter stuff, and if you noticed, most of that comes from people who you know are not that well-educated, or who are very overly religious. There's a difference between being very devout to your religion and being a fanatic.

I've even heard of Harry Potter book burnings... how horrible is that? It's the strict for no reason / overly-religious types, I'm guessing. Am I sterotyping overly religious types to be that way?

Whoa, didn't think I'd ever defend a 'super-Christian' but...
No, they just have a different opinion of things. I have a nondenominational "super-Christian" friend who firmly believes in that stuff. You might completely disagree with it (I do.. all. the. time.) but her real purpose for the whole argument is to 'save' you. Just trying to turn you to what she sees as the only way to God which she has studied and lived in such a way it is truth to her. Its not a case of 'ignorance is bliss', just another version of the truth. I bold 'studied' because much of what she says does quite make sense. I turn a blind eye to it only because my own values negate hers.
And this is directed to a few of you. Just because sometimes they horribly overdo it, doesn't mean you have to horribly overdo the same with such things as "People like that are everything wrong with soceity.". I find angry, disrespectful comments like those very akin to what Jerry Fallwell (or one of those TV evangelists) said about gays, lesbians, etc. after 9/11; and like those wierdos in Grace Fellowship who burned and stabbed Pokemon dolls due to completely ignorant reasoning.
'Don't take the methods of the devil'... or something, as your own. We're better than that.
Yes, it gets very, very frustrating sometimes; but at least you don't have to deal with it on a normal basis.
Now that I'm done defending, let me say that I agree greatly against those extreme-extremists, super-right-wingers who have lost touch of reality and believe only in their insane 'truth'. Those people like said Grace Fellowship who attacked not only Pokemon but Ghostbusters and Casper. CASPER! Those people who most likely were a great catalyst in the cancellation of Invader Zim despite its obvious quality and pure entertainment value. Yes, these people should be stopped, and, tho I doubt they'll cause another 9/11... I wouldn't put it past them. I mean, Osama and his troops completely perverted Islam and these guys are completely perverting Christianity...
No, sir, I don't like it.

or
b)it works and the kid can make a killing at magic shows

I agree with you, Borg. I have a "Super Christian" friend as well, and she does sometimes makes sense. Well... rarely, really. It's more common sense though; if she didn't believe in Pokemon it's because it's a boring game and the cartoon sucks. Not because the Devil talks backwards during the credits of the cartoon show or something. (It's actually an okay show, and an addictive game. Just making an example.)
And what was the reason for the major disliking of Pokemon? Harry Potter was "violent," but what was Pokemon?

Okay, sometimes the SuperChristrians can make sense in some fields. But Pokemon?!? I won't be politically correct here: They had the stupidest reasons on hell and earth.
[1]Some Pokemon sprout horns
[2]Pokemon 'Evolve', which Christians should not believe
[3]Psychic, Ghost and Dragon types of Pokemon
[4]The Card game promotes gambling and is connected to Magic: The Gathering
[5]It encourages kids to become masters, meaning, above God
[6]Use of Crystals to make a Pokemon more sinister, more ugly, more powerful
[7]Its real title is Pocket - Monsers. 2 words that are inherintly evil.
And my reasoning:
1 - First of all, this is ignorant because NO Pokemon sprout horns. Nidoran always has his/hers. Tauros looks like a bull which, indeed, has horns.
2 - Pokemon might coin the phrase 'evolve', but they do it out of change and self-improvement. One of my sources puts it better.
3 - While psychic, ghost and dragon principles pretty much are inspired by supernatural forces, the Pokemon of these types never convey it this supposedly unchristian way.
4 - It. Just. Doesn't.
5 - Masters? Yes. Gods? No.
6 - Welcome to the world of RPGs. Here, you fight battles to gain experience to better your character. Nuff said.
7 - ... sickos.
Anyway, for better representation on the Pokemon front, I suggest heading to
http://leto_chan.tripod.com/pokemon/editorial9.html and
http://www.accuros.com/thornbush/pollen/pokemon.htm
Both are made by Christians, and both make absolute sense to me.
ADDED : And for a little fun, here's a MyST of the article that opened my eyes to the existance of 'Super-Christians'.

Are these the same Christian extremists who also believe that Star Wars, Star Trek, and basically anything with aliens in them is Satanic? (This would include Batman/Superman/Justice League/Batman Beyond too). Their reasons were (1) God made Humanity in His image, thus aliens can't exist (??), and (2) if aliens do exist, they must be evil. (?? Doesn't this contradict Statement #1??)
I don't like Pokemon, but it's because (1) Pokemon's success got Batman/Superman and Batman Beyond cancelled! :( and (2) Pokemon's success also got the Nintendo 64 Metroid game cancelled, because Nintendo put the staff that was going to make that game on the task of making Pokemon Stadium 1 and 2. :(
Religious extremists are quite scary though. I never understood the "it's bad because it has violence in it" argument... last time I checked, The Bible was one of the most violent books ever written!
I can remember once seeing Pat Robertson saying on TV that you shouldn't go watch the movie "Independence Day" because it's obviously not true and aliens are Satanic in nature.
Hey, wait a minute. I figured it out! The religious extremists think that Pokemon, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Star Trek, and Batman/Superman are supposed to be true ! Just keep reminding them that it's this wonderful invention we call 'fiction '...
Some of the strangest Christian groups out there are Church of Christ, the Mormons, and the Jehova's Witnesses.
And how about those Scientologists?!?
As for extreme Islam, Osama Bin Laden and his organizations envision a World without technology, where anyone who doesn't to as their told (read: work on farms and read the Koran) are killed on sight. All knowledge except the Koran would be destroyed in their 'pefect' World. Just look at Afghanistan under the Taliban. That was just a preview of what they really wanted! Scary... :(

Personally I don't belive God has a gender why would God need gender unless there was others like God and if that was so who created all of them. As for God made humanity in God's image well I think that has more to do with the sole then the physical body thus God could have made others beings on other planets with a sole and I really don't think God really cares about the nit picking of religion and society I think God is really more conserend with war, pollution, starvation and other more serious issues. I mean when you die and all you did was go to church and take pokémon off the air I don't think you will be any better off then compaired to someone that never went to church yet dedicated their life protecting the enviroment and the rights or all. I really don't think it is good to go through life worrying too much about how God will react it is like kissing up to the boss it kinda sticks out like a sore thumb and back fires.

http://www.capalert.com/capreports/ These people are insane, you know if they didn't tie them selves to religion they would be in a mental institution. They see sex and offences to god in almost every movie and when they reviewed the move Chocolate which is about hard line religion they tore into it and also said this
And, of course, when the logic of the script called for statements such as "I'm his mother and I know what is best for him" from one of the town mothers, such God-given responsibility was belittled and made to appear as closed minded and abusive. Well, what we are doing helps you, mom (and dad). We tell you the truth about the content of a movie so YOU can make an informed decision whether a flick is fit for your kids without the pressures of word of mouth, advertisements, and pleas from your progeny and the pressures on them from their peersWhat the *beep* does that have to do with the *beeping* movie?, I didn't ask for a plug for the *beeping* site and except for the fact they are pressuring people not to see movies what is the diffence between them and advertisements they both have a agenda and don't give a rats ass about the quality of the movie.
Plus the mother was suffocating the kid she wouldn't even let him ride a bike for fear he would hurt him self.

I go to a Church of Christ Church and some people think we believe all this weird stuff just because "Church of Christ" has been given some strange meaning by others. I always thought that Church of Christ meant that we go to the Bible as our ultimate source and follow Christ.

From the "Harry Potter" review on the site
I have not read any of the "Harry Potter" books. Thus I am not influenced or biased by them. But I can say the movie is just as the books are described by the ones with the open mindedness to see precisely what they are.
Yeah, I can see precisely what they are: FICTION.

To this investigator, Batman & Robin (1997) was uncomfortable. I felt, for the lack of a better description, cheated by the objectivity of the CAP Entertainment Media Analysis Model which
prevented me from injecting personal distaste

Anyway, I love these two dead-pan lines:
"lost heavily due to . . . [presenting] reckless idiocy as acceptable."
"And, of course, the rubber suits were as accurate to true anatomy as possible without being explicit."
Actually, besides the quote Calico provided, this suggests the analyst actually has a brain and just doesn't use it:
The fantasy of cartoon-made-into-a-movie style made analysis of this movie quite difficult. So, take this analysis with a grain of salt.
That is, he/she admits to using an inappropriate model in grading this film, and basically says you should ignore what the analysis says. Proof that you can't use these rigid, quantificational systems to decide if a film is "moral" or "immoral."
Hmm, I feel inspired to construct my own "analytical model" and use it on films. Maybe I'll call it something like "Zen Positivism," and make up ridiculous rules about not being allowed to use the words "kleptomania" and "desuetude," or to show people talking on a cell-phones ("offense to copper wires.") :p

He said it was because it had a dissodent beat. So if you sing Amazing Grace with a dissodent beat, I guess Satan made you.
