Is this the first time anime has aired on the Sunday schedule since Big O?

Nope. The last anime was Super Milk-Chan.

An AS bump just now showed this polling for favorite Opening on Adult Swim where Cowboy Bebop's Tank won! They aired a second of it after commercials, then said:

Like, there was ever any choice! :anime:

Yeah, I saw that too. I was almost surprised that they didn't do the FLCL opening, considering how much they love that show, but did it even have an opening? I can't remember if they cut it, or if it just didn't have one.

Nope, didn't have one.

"Tank!" definitely deserves to win the best opening on AS award. I recently did a lengthy project on it for my Music Theory class. I didn't even do that good of a job on the project but I got an A because my professor liked the song so much. He played it for the whole class and everything.

Why are the ratings so early...?

Xavier gets Top 3 on for its debut. Not a bad start.

To be fair, those ratings are pretty good, and there's no reason to think the anime was much lower 407k. Of course, it could have been.

Wow, some dumbass got a Metalocalypse tattoo. I think I share the feelings expressed in the card. I mean, in five years no ones going to know what Metalocalypse is(that's assuming they know what it is now). So, basically, for the rest of his life, people are going to ask him "Why do you have a bunch of ugly cartoon men on your arm?"

So, when are we going to go back to new episodes of Family Guy?

Well definitely can't blame the World Series or Halloween on that set of Saturday ratings.

I still blame the lack of advertising.

I dunno, these ratings are pretty good. Like The Collector said, there's really no reason to believe that the anime is below the 300-400k range.

These ratings are just really weird, though. I know it's not the first time something like this has happened, but it always confuses me when it does.

With both Boondocks airings on there I can't imagine Death Note doing much worse than 3rd place did.

Death Note continues to prove that slow dialog heavy anime is anti-ratings.

And a Metalocolaypse tattoo? I feel the same way about that as people who get tattoos of one-hit-wonders. You really need to think about it before marking your skin.

I don't see how. It probably got between 300-400k, which is pretty typical for all the anime (yes, even Bleach).

We can't be sure. Past ratings for anime have been as low as 100,000 when not in the top 3. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case for Death Note.

Well we now know Futurama's replacement come 2008.

We can't be sure. Past ratings for anime have been as low as 100,000 when not in the top 3. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case for Death Note.

How would you know the ratings of the anime outside the top 3 anyway? And you can't be sure that it's the nature of Death Note so much as the fact that AS isn't advertising it at all. Really, what the hell were they thinking? Bleach got a sharp increase in ratings after it was promoted on Sundays. Why wouldn't they promote Death Note? Plus, we didn't even see DN's ratings. Call me optimistic, but I wouldn't say that below 407k=instant suckage. We've got to wait for the ratings to stabilize.

Also, Nielson does not accurately represent ratings. Each person=20,000 people. For each Nielson person who decided to get drunk, and come home to watch Boondocks in the middle of the night, I wouldn't instantly assume there were 20,000 more.

Unfortunately, that doesn't really matter. The ratings are what networks go by, and ultimately, they are the only things that matter.

That said, I highly doubt DN's ratings were far below 407k, especially not as low as 100k (come on...the DN videos on the fix get at least 250k/week...there's no way the TV ratings are that low). Bleach's ratings were fairly mediocre until the all-night Bleachathon, iirc. I'm not sure if the network will have one for DN, but the ratings (whatever they are) would definitely increase if they did.

Oh, and the whole advertising thing would probably help, too.

It's probably right there next to "getting anime that isn't dialog-heavy".

I challenge you to something: name one AS comedy show which isn't heavily based on dialog (failed pilots like Korgoth don't count).

That's like saying standup comedy is based on dialog. It's not applicable to compare exchanges to exposition.

"Master Shake (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1075468/): [trying to calm Frylock down about the bills] Look, we got electricity... and we got each other.
[electricity is cut off]
Master Shake (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1075468/): Look, we got each other. What, are you gonna bill us for that now?
Frylock (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1052894/): You are about to learn a lesson in responsibility Shake!
Master Shake (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1075468/): I'm responsible... for getting us into that club that one time. I smooth-talked that dude. You saw me lay it down.
Frylock (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1052894/): Frankly, Shake, I can live like this. You can't. And if you don't pay these bills, we'll just see how long it takes before you go out of your freaking mind.
Master Shake (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1075468/): I'm not backing down on this, *ever*!
[falls off chair]
Master Shake (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1075468/): Turn on the lights, I want you to see the look on my face! Do you hear me? Or did they send a guy out to shut off your ears because I didn't pay the ear bill?
[Shake crashes through a window, landing in the front yard]
Master Shake (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1075468/): [shouts] Where the hell is the switch?"

That's dialog-based humor, true, but it's the same in any interplay. Same thing with stand up, a lot of linking details for a joke. There's a world of difference between that and Light babbling on about the rules of the Death Note.

Now contrary to my arguments, I've found DN enjoyable if a bit slow paced. But is that going to appeal to an audience that seemed to unanimously approve Ichigo's battles with Hollows and the Shiginami over Paranoia Agent's dialog and exposition? No way.

Probably not, though Death Note is a lot more linear than Paranoia Agent and would make less heads explode. Still, the Death Note manga is actually more popular than the Bleach one, and given plenty of people in the mainstream seem to enjoy lengthy, exposition-heavy crime dramas, Death Note could have the strength to reach out to different audience.

Of course, AS isn't in the best position to reach out, given their utter lack of advertising.

Was there some event going on Monday night? I don't think there was... Maybe there were a lot of episodes "almost finished" and they needed an extra week to finish some of them up or something.
