Obviosly, the title of this thread makes little sense...DBZ & Pokemon aren't related to Windows..are they??

They actually share a great many traits..

They're popular. DBZ has for the longest time kept Toonami afloat. When there are polls that matter, DBZ comes out on top. Pokemon too is immensely popular. Pokemon has led KidsWB to a dominate position in the children's entertainment field, and it could be argued, that it helped destroy Fox Kids. Pokemon also has helped keep Nintendo afloat in these Sony Playstaion dominated times.
Windows too is very popular. It's safe to say over 75% of all consumer PCs sold in the US come with a Windows OS on them. Much of the software written is for windows, and most people when talking about computer, are talking about Windows.

Another shared trait is that they are despised. People love to hate Windows...the Media Bashes it, computer users bash it, there are times when it seems that NO one likes it. And as much as people love to hate windows, there are just as many who hate Pokemon. If you've heard of pokemon, you've heard people complaining about it. DBZ is also the target of frequent attacks by rabid anti-fans...

And these attacks aren't completly unwarrented, as both Windows and POkemon/DBZ have problems...
Windows is well known for it's unreliability, and "blue screen of death" Pokemon & DBZ both have questionable content, flimsy plots, and little characterization...boiling down to we're good, you're bad, let's fight!

There's an awful amount of repitition in the subjects....and changes are highly anticipated, and turn into let downs. Windows has been revamping it's OS with newer names, flashier graphics...and little real change. Yes some things have been fixed, and too much change would be a bad thing...but for the 100 price tag on an upgrade, it's generally not worth it. Both DBZ and pokemon, when rolling out with new episodes, attract many viewers, who after getting over the initial excitement of new episodes, realize it's mostly more of the same.

However, the subjects are also terribly underrated.
Windows is #1 for a reason. It has the widest amount of support in terms of both Hardware & software. It's multimedia properties are second to none. It's easy to use. Pokemon as a game is fun to play, and easy to learn, but there's complexity behind the cute monsters, and silly names. DBZ has some truely funny moments, can be increadibly moving when it wants to be, and has some awesome fights...it's designed to entertain, and it does.

The alternatives to either Windows, or the two popular anime also share traits...

They aren't that well known. Most people haven't heard of Linux, or FreeBSD. The faithful to those OSes tend to hang out in small communities, and trade software, some of which they made themselves. The Anime communities is the same way...while many people have heard of Pokemon, the names Kenshin and Evangelion aren't as well known. Fan Subs are traded frequently, between friends who have little anime comunities all their own.
In addition to being obscure, they also require more thought. While you can turn on DBZ, and watch the powerful guys blow things up, Animes like Evangelion & Lain require one to put some thought into what they're watching. Linux isn't as user friendly as Windows, due to the way it does things.
And if we're talking similarities here, both Anime and alternative OSes are becomming more mainstream. More software stores now house copies of the Linux OS, and software and games designed for it. And the video stores have more and more anime, not just DBZ & Pokemon.

Anyway...
That's what I think, feel free to tell me I'm a hack..

This is a very rough draft. C&C is welcomed, and hoped for.

Interesting essay, although I'm not entirely sure I agree. People hate windows because they have to use it. They have no choice, they either use windows or try to learn a new system. There is no learning with windows, its designed for the computer illiterate.

Pokemon and DBZ are not a necessity. You can still watch other cartoons on KWB and CN. These shows are on, because most people(i mean cartoon watchers of course) like them, sure there are the haters out there, but they don't have to watch them. I hate windows, but I still have to use it. I don't have the time or ability to learn a completely new system.

Linux is availble for Download....for free...

You can get the CD Image, Burn it to CD, and install it as a secondary OS...if you want info, either PM me or Email me (goto my profile, it's all easy) and I'll talk you through it...that way you still have the OS you're comfortable with, and you can reboot over to Linux, and play around with it. That's what I did to teach myself.

The idea that you HAVE to use Windows is a falacy that MS wants you to believe.
