I am getting ready to push 40 years old already and have two kids 7 an 4.
I am amazed at how my 7 yr old has latched onto Boomerang. She just can't get enough of the Pink Panther or Popeye or any other ones on that station.
She walks around singing "I'm Popeye the sailer man Tooot tooot!!!"
She used to watch 'newer' cartoons on like Nick or Cartoon Network. But I am finding out that the 'classics' on Boomerang are the ones that are staying in her head.
A testament to good writting. :D

I'm 14, and I still love these classics. (Though some people who are my age say they're for babies). If you haven't already, you might want to show your kids Bugs Bunny (For sure), Betty Boop, and Little Lulu (Both Famous Studios Version and HBO versions). I sometimes show my neighbor's kids (who are about as old as your kids) these cartoons, and they score pretty high. (Popeye also does.)

 Not really what this thread is about (as the subject here is classic cartoons specifically, not cartoons in general), but still good to know.

I would say all classics are good for all ages to watch, specially the cartoons in the eighties that had the advice morals or scenes at each or several epsodes, such cartoon like The Centurions, Transformers, G.I Joe, He-man, and She-ra :)

Wha? Dragon Ball has been over for a while now, and Pokemon, while still popular, has already passed its' peak in mainstream popularity.
On a semi-related note, I'm getting a little tired of people scapegoating anime all the time in regards to people not respecting the classics. I'm not even an anime fan, and this practice bugs me. I agree that the classic cartoons are currently getting shafted and that needs to change, but the current shoddy treatment of the classics is not the fault of anime, nor is the fault of the kids for liking anime. It's not Japan's fault that the greedy corporate fat-cats who own many of the classic cartoons would rather just sit on them and let them collect dust in the vaults than allow them to be seen by a wide spectrum of audience. Yes, anime is popular with a lot of kids, but it's still just a niche market. Anime is not the Apocalypse which will someday destroy all other cartoons forever. Therefore, we need not draw battle lines in the sand between Eastern and Western cartoons. It is possible to like them both.
-Ooh, temper check. OK. I'm better now.

I grew up with Johnny Bravo, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Powerpuff Girls, Dexter's Lab, and all those shows that used to make me giddy when I would go around wondering "Who's going to host this Friday's Cartoon Cartoon special?!", so I never spent too much time watching old cartoons.
However, when I did, it used to be either Tom & Jerry or some Mickey Mouse cartoon that would poke it's head once every thousand years on a Disney station.

You know, I understand that a lot of us are upset about how the classics are being treated right now, but obviously biased statements like the above ultimately do more harm than good to the cause. Please let's not turn this into yet another "old=good, new=bad" rally. That is beyond tired.
I love many of the classic toons also, but that doesn't mean that everything current isn't automatically "lame". How many of these "lame" cartoons have you even seen or watched more than a minute of? I'm guessing not many. Why must it always be one extreme or the other? It is possible to like both old and new cartoons. It doesn't always have to be one to the exclusion of the other. Like Silverstar already said, you can like them both.

Very good point there. And let's not forget, it's always the classic cartoons that inspire the shows of today someway or other. If you look very hard amongst all the trashy shows, there have been several that actually get it right. Heck, they did it right before with Dexter's Lab and Johnny Bravo - Dexter (the first four seasons) has a cool retro look like a Modern UPA mixed with American Action while Johnny (the first and last seasons) had a nice ting of Hanna-Barbera-esque humour in style and writing, in its way. That and it was very, very kind to guest star characters like Huckleberry Hound, Scooby Doo and Fred Flintsone (unlike Billy and Mandy, but that's for another post).
IMO, the best modern show to actually be PERFECT is Krypto the Superdog. That was smothered in old school HB, which really shows in the show's design, but with better writing and unique characters. I felt it was a shame that it was cancelled it so soon (unless I'm wrong about that).

It is parental duty to block Nick, CN, and Disney channels. Instead, one is to show them Looney Tunes, Tex Avery, Tom & Jerry, Woody Woodpecker, Popeye in order to be a decent parent. :D
I'm going to lock this topic because it's really months old and it involves arguments that don't usually end well here. Some of you are also quoting posts that are over eight months old.
This board is to discuss classic animation from the 80s and before. It's fine to compare to newer stuff, but when we start posting stuff like "Classic animation is better than all that lame stuff today", then the thread is going in the wrong direction.
