View Full Version : Why Cosmo Spacely?
I may get a lot of flak from the M.S.ers here but, why did the creators of The Jetsons have to create a mean, greedy cruel no goodnik like Cosmo Spacely? I thought of him as a no good bully.

It's just your typical mean boss who deep down really likes the main character of the show (ie. Lou Grant with Mary Richards, J. Jonah Jameson with Peter Parker). And besides, he was funny. I always liked Spacely, especially when he and Cogswell were feuding. And he was voiced by the great Mel Blanc, as well. Also, he was hilarious in Jetsons: The Movie.

Cartoon characters typically have tough bosses (Time-tested cartoon stereotype. Think Mr. Slate, Mr. Burns, and, to a lesser extent, Dilbert's Boss)
Those grouches couldn't hold a candle to Cosmo--he'd eat them for lunch!! He's uglier than sin and meaner than a junkyard dog!! And I know just the actor to live action protray evil Spacely--Danny De Vito!!

You know, this is the first time I've actually mentally compared Spacely and Cogswell with Mr Krabs and Plankton from Spongebob Squarepants. The characters themselves are also very similar, although slavedriver Krabs would never threated to fire Spongebob.

Krabs has threatened to fire Squidward a couple of times. In one episode, Krabs actually fired Spongebob, until Sandy convinced Krabs to get his job back.

...if you consider unethical business practices funny. Furthermore, it reveals that he was more than just a typical "mean boss". It reveals that the only thing he actually cares about is money. Poor Jane almost lost her son because of it (if you've seen the movie, you know what I refer to). Remember, he had been promising Jetson vice-president for years, but he always made some excuse to not come through on that, plus Jetson had been fired and re-hired I don't know how many times.
In short, Spacely really was a "penny-pinching old crab" who only cared about money. On the other hand, he could never fire Jetson for good, because Jetson is his best, most loyal worker; something that Spacely constantly resents.
So in retrospect, Spacely's personality was only half-funny (i.e., it was half-serious). Whenever you hear "JETSON!!!!!!!" you know it's Spacely.

The Jetsons was basically a H-B version of the Blondie movies, and Mr. Spacely was their equivalent to Dagwood's boss Mr. Dithers.
Compared to Cosmo Spacley, Dithers and Eugene Krabs were considered wimps, considering Dithers could beat Dagwood, whereas Cosmo never even laid a finger on George. But like it or not, I feel sorry for poor George. If I was he, I'd get a better job than what Spaceley the Crab offers. It'd serve the mean midget right. I guess Blondie was to The Jetsons (though Jane wasn't bolnde and the head character like Geoge was), what The Honeymooners were to The Flintstones. But then Wilma and Betty could kick Spacley's butt.

True, Jane wasn't blond, but she was voiced by Penny Singleton, who played Blondie in those films, I believe.

I don't understand what that has to do with anything.
