In this episode Ganju meets a Soul Reaper. Back stories will probably be told.
Also, this is the 40th episode. We're only got 92 more episodes to go before we catch up with Japan!

Last week: In the heat of battle, Ichigo gets a much-needed confidence booster...and STILL gets his manhood handed to him.
Oh, HE'S dead TOO?! It might have done us good to know that last week.
We thought he was a goner, but his cat came back.
He's been through the desert with a sword with no name, and it's good to be out of the rain.
YOU MUSTN'T RUN AWAY, SHINJI-GAMI!
I don't like where this flashback is going.
Big Brother is watching you.
Heaven help him, he's going to get his butt kicked.
Two more episodes before the glorious return of Orihime.

Actually Ichigo won, apparently. Think of it as sort of a Rocky-esque victory.

Don's Thoughts: Like I said, the Ichigo/Kenpachi fight has a Rocky-esque ending. The first one to be precise. I liked Ganju's problem with the rope clever solution too. And I did not see Ganju's brother killed by of all people, Rukia. That caught me off guard. About damn time Rukia's brother appears in this story arc.
Grade: B+
Next Time: Where did Yoruichi go with Ichigo, and who's that girl? Find out next time!

yay! They mention Kaien! and finally some Ukitake. It's been awhile.
If Ichigo didn't die, Kenpachi sure as hell couldn't have. They both struck each other at pretty much the same level, so I doubt somebody as huge as him is going to just knock himself right out of the show.
guh Byakuya. I do love Byakuya, expecially when he's all cool looking like that at the end.
Since the Soul Society arc ends on Ep 63, it means that there's 23 more episodes until it's safe to release Bleach DS Stateside without the game spoiling the Adult Swim run! (Currently, Wikipedia pegs ep 63 to air on Dec. 15, 2007; consider this a countdown)
And, poor Hanataro/Shinji. You try to be brave.

I was waiting for this moment to finally come. Ever since Ganju mentioned a Soul Reaper waaaaay back then with that horribly disguised silhouette popping up, I wanted to see how he would react to it being Rukia that they were saving. I'm surprised at how... not so angry he was. I was expecting him to explode with anger. Episode was decent till the end, however. I had a feeling things would kinda stretch out a bit after that fight with Kenpachi and Ichigo. And yeesh, Hanataro had crazy guts to stand up in the end like that. Especially since he could have probably been destroyed with a touch.

Well bleach for the most part for this episode I call it a filler nothing really happened it starts getting good from this point forward though. The Soul Society Arch is definately my favorite besides some other arch I like which we wont get to see for about a year or 2.
I doubt AS will have a marathon of this to quicken the pace. Anyway review for tonight besides kenpachis past 8/10 for a filler
The websites on my siggy r only if u want to spoil yourselves tread with caution
I liked the scenes with Ganju and Hanataro......I felt a bit sorry for Ganju when he found out who Rukia was(just like in the manga)....and loved that he went to stop Hanataro from certain death at the hands of Byakuya Kuchiki....
Also loved the flashback scene with Kenpachi and Yachiru....I've always liked their relationship(sort of a father/daughter or big brother/little sister sorta deal)....
Also,I think this is the first next episode preview where the characters actually talk about what's going to happen in the next episode(sure, they're making jokes, but still).....

And I did not see Ganju's brother killed by of all people, Rukia.
My first run through the series I was completely lost and totally forgot some things that happened earlier on so to save everyone some grief, I'm gonna connect the dots a little.
Spoiler tag employed, but theres really no facts that we don't know yet (although you DID have to know who people were when they showed and they weren't introduced till later). It's clear by this point in the manga and it becomes clear like a rock to the head later in the anime.
I apologize but this is gonna sound a little disconnected ... till the end when I tie it all together.
In the beginning of the series and twice more we hear references from Rukia that Ichigo is "just like him". It's very vague and much easier to pick up on the second time you watch the series when you know to listen for it.
The rest of this dates back a bit to the Grand Fisher. I don't recall if this was in the manga but the anime didn't make the references clear enough. In Tite Kudo's own words, the Grand Fisher was meant to be the big bad guy that is, to some degree, calling the shots through the first several episodes.
When Ichigo is fighting the Grand Fisher, Rukia has a flash back to a fight she was at with her squad captain and lieutenant. During the fight Captain Ukitake tells Rukia that there fights for honor and that there are fights to win. The fight her Lieutenant was involved in was one of the former, just like the fight Ichigo was in with the Grand Fischer.
Rukia initially was so intent on helping Ichigo because he's "just like him"; just like her Lieutenant. Her Lieutenant died to a similar fight of honor and she felt Ichigo would die to the Grand Fischer. However, she remembered the words of her captain and didn't interfere because she knew that Ichigo would never forgive her.
In this week's episode, we learned that Rukia's Lieutenant was Ganju's elder Brother from the little exchange Ganju and Rukia had.
Rukia is the Soul Reaper that returned the remains of the Zanpakuto to the family.
Be advised that the story doesn't end here, these are simply the things you can pickup from what we've seen throughout the series if you know what to look for.

I don't picture Rukia as a cold-blooded killer. There's got to me more to the story. But I won't look at spoilers... I was already spoiled a long time ago about the cat's "secret".

Ken and the pink haired girl are seriously messed up... And Ganju looks to be pretty much screwed, next ep. Unless a certain archer and his redheaded companion make a surprise entry and pick off the Captain while he's not looking. But that won't happen, so yeah, Ganju is pretty screwed.
And for soem reason, I found the preview gags pretty funny this time. "You're actually a dog?"

No, in the real world your bodys alive while in soul society its (brace yourself) your soul. When you die in the real world your soul is set free. If you make it to soul society and die there then you soul is destroyed and you'll really be died.

No, in Soul Society you get a spirit body. When you die in Soul Society, your spirit body becomes spirit particles and your soul is reincarnated in the real world.
Many Bleach watchers seem to forget that rarely new souls are created so souls go between world through death. Soul Reapers keep the balance of souls coming and going by cleansing Hollows and giving konso to souls. That was the main problem the Soul Reapers had with the Quincies since Quincies destroy Hollows instead of cleansing them.
If everyone in Soul Society were souls, then where are their chains of fate?

The Chain of Fate is what anchors the soul to the real world. When they go to Soul Society, theres no longer a need for that chain since they are no longer being anchored there.
That said, I don't think we ever got an official explanation of what happens when a soul dies in Soul Society. I've always thought of it as almost a heiarchy. When they die there they go to yet a higher plane of exist but thats only my imagination of the situation.
As for my 'spoiler' above, keep in mind, I'm just connecting the dots =).

We did get an official explanation. They explain it in the episode we find out about the Quincy massacre. The souls go between the two worlds and the Soul Reapers make sure the number of souls coming is about the same as the number going, but the Quincies were messing around by destroying Hollows.
The only thing that's yet unexplained is what happens to the body in Soul Society after death, but that is a manga "spoiler" I already revealed: the body decomposes into spirit particles.

I know this, but your not reincarnated. Think of it like your body after rotting and then giving birth to new life. That is not the same as you geting reincarnated. When your soul dies your died. And even captains have chains in soul society. The 4th capatin even stated that the cause of aziens death was his heart being periced AND HIS CHAIN BEING DESTROYED

I too think the writers ended the last episode a little too early, having Ichigo drop but not reveal he actually beat Kenpachi until the start of the next episode. That's a strong tease there, yet a bit awkward.
aww Yachiru and Kenpachi remind me of Sesshomaru and Rin. It's adorable. Now that I think about it, that does sound right. Not many people would become acquaintances the way they did, but I think it works here.
And oh yeah... forgot this was where Ganju reveals it was Rukia that killed his brother. Hmmm... and yet, he's gonna protect her just so poor Hanataro, who got mixed up in all of this, doesn't have to throw his life away.
I don't give Ganju much of a chance, though.

Thats not what I meant.

All we know is in the Soul Society Arch, NO ONE dies as a result of the conflict.
We learn later its because they simply absorb spirit energy till they recover.

Those who already know about future episodes know where to go to get that information and those who don't want to be spoiled would be less tempted if there was not a link. So there's no need to link to anything, just use numbers if it's really that important.

Finally watched the episode. Wasn't bad. The Yachiru/Kenpachi scenes were emotional, and I think their brother/sister like relationship is cute. That was funny how Ganju threw Hanataro along with the rope. It sure is a twist that Rukia was the soul reaper that killed Ganju's brother. Uh oh, when Byakuya shows up, you know Ganju is facing trouble. I can't wait for next week's ep.
[/obvious joke]Oh my God, they killed Kenny!
Nah, he's probably going to show up fine in an episode or two like most of the other major characters that ended up surviving seemingly fatal wounds. At least next week we get some revelations about a character who's been strangely absent most of the arc.

Just to point out, in tonight's episode (Monday Night that is) Byakuya Kuchiki states "I see, he does have a striking resemblance to him".
This is one of the references I was talking about Ganju's Brother.
I almost feel like making a quick guide to all the references. Each time I watch episodes they seem to come up more often then I thought.
Who is this SHE
Obviously the tanned woman that appeared during the final second or so of the preview, who, if you remember, also appeared during the Squad 2 (the one with Soifon, the bowl-cut girl) ending a couple months ago.
BTW, I keep forgetting to mention this, but did I miss a scene where some random creepy scientist/graverobber/whatever guys had stolen Rukia's gigai body after Rukia gave herself up and were shocked by it for some reason? It occured relatively early on in the SS arc in the manga, but I don't remember it being animated.

Please don't tell me this show is going to be like One Piece where the characters have dramatic "deaths" only to show up alive again a few episodes later.

No one dies in the Soul Society Arch. The reasons why are revealed very shortly. Within the next two episodes I believe.
What's a gigai body?
A Gigai is an artificial body designed to allow spirits (specifically Shinigami) interact with people in the real world.
Rukia inhabited a Gigai while she was in the real world. You may recall "Mr Hat and clogs" stating that Rukia's connection between her spirit and gigai wasn't doing well and that she couldn't keep it up forever.

Wow, surprise after surprise after surpirse in this one. It's these sort of twists that make me really want to stay away from any Bleach spoilers that I can because this show does a really good job of fooling the auidence expecations I don't want ruined due to being curious/having people blab about it. I mean we have Kenpachi revealed to be the loser of the fight since he fell down with his Zanpaktu broken (still seems sort of unfair Ichigo got a chance for a do over and won while Chad didn't but hey main character clause and all), Kenpachi and Yachiru's backstory on how they met, Kenpachi seemignly dying (hope that's not the case actually. He does seem like a decent guy who just wants to fight actually challenging people now), the 13th squad introduction, Ganju and Hanataro actually sneaking past the guards to get to Ruika, Ganju fidning out Ruika killed his brother (I didn't see that one coming until one minute before it happened), the 6th Captain coming along and Ganju preparing to fight him. I have a feeling that Ganju woudln't really last too long against this guy if he's only had 5th member of 11th squad level (and even if 11th's the best, a captaiin can probably any member of any squad with a lower rank then themselves), espically since he dosen't get Ichigo level power ups but we'll see what happens next times with even more twists and turns probably happen in this show that I'll probably enjoy a lot.
