ANN: Viz Entertainment at Anime Expo 2007 (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/convention/2007/anime-expo/viz-entertainment)

Viz's final anime release of 2007 will be Death Note. Volume one will be released on November 20, and further volumes will follow each month. Both a standard DVD-only edition and a collector's special box will be available. The collector's box will include a limited-edition Ryuk figure, which will also be offered for stand-alone purchase via the Viz website. Viz is hoping to also have Death Note air on Adult Swim (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/company.php?id=2514), but no specific details of any arrangement have been confirmed yet.

Interesting!

It just illustrates their intentions and isn't anything truly permanent. I'm sure some other distributor hopes to have their show aired on AS.

Just as long as AS doesn't screw around with it like their other anime properties, I'm fine!

What do you mean "screw around with it" Cloud? Besides some offhanded remarks about the ratings not doing good/card bashing on some anime, AS actually treats the action shows rather well. I mean really, very few (if any) edits are made to ASA shows nowadays, most at least get they're full opening now and they all have pretty well directed dubs that nail the feel shown in the origianl version of the anime. How are they reall screwed around with? I mean if AS airs Death Note (which does seem sort of possible but still unknown currently) I'm sure it'd be as well respected/treated as Blood+ or Bleach is. And I see nothing wrong with those two shows in terms of dub quality/showings on AS.

That's what I was aiming for, but you won the discussion.

So it sounds like AS hasn't decided on whether to pick up Death Note or not. If they got it for the fall, then there would be three premiers every Saturday, which is kind of a rarity. AS works fine enough with two action premiers a week, so it's not like there's a necessity to pick up a new show. So what will you do, Adult Swim?

I think they're going to get it. It already has a strong presence in the US, and they haven't made fun of it in their various "anime we won't pick up" bumps, so there's a chance.

Then again, the lack of action in it could hurt its chances. Hopefully their fans, ala Paranoia Agent.

I know a certain someone on these boards who is going to be majorly peeved about this. ;)

Actually, I remember seeing it once or twice on some of those bumps. Then again, I don't think the make-fun-of-anime bumps have much to do with what AS chooses to purchase.

I'm really not sure what AS is going to do. Now with today's schedule update AS has gone all the way through most of September and still no sign of Death Note. Bleach premiered in early September last year, so it's not a good sign. Guess we'll wait and see.

That's not unusual. He gets peeved about everything. :p

Question mark, exclamation point, question mark!

Anyway, sounds good, I hope I can catch this show once it's dubbed.

Oh now? Who is this mystery man?

Anyways, stupid move, but nothing can really be done. It really should be on Toonami, and this doesn't change that.

Death Note isn't such a huge show to flip out over, though.

Yeah but whether it should or not... you didn't honestly consider it in the running for Toonami did you? I didn't.

Honestly, I'm not surprised that Viz wants it on AS. I know I would if I were them.

Usually when Adult Swim lists a bunch of anime they don't have, I take it to mean that they either passed on it or didn't go after it for some reason or another. I don't remember them ever mentioning Death Note though...

And I predicted November for DN's premiere, but that's probably too late with the DVDs announced for November. Most likely they're still working out a deal, so if that's the case, then all [as] would have to do is update the schedule when the date is decided. Remember, they didn't have Blood+ until a month before it premiered.

I would figure September or October at the latest.

Check out this bump (http://forums.toonzone.net/showpost.php?p=2535018&postcount=40) I typed up back in May.

Hmm, good point. One trouble that could come up in negotiating a price is that Death Note has a bizarre number of episodes. I believe it has 37, where as most shows have 52, 26, or something around there.

I kind of had a feeling when Viz got Death Note that they'd try to stick it on Adult Swim.

Yeah, I mean Bandai hoped to have Zeta Gundam air on Adult Swim and we all know how that turned out.

Yeah, Death Note has 37, which is a pretty odd number. A few shows have 39 episodes, but even then, Death Note is a couple of episodes different from the norm.

Exactly why should a show where the main character is a psychopath and is more about mind games than action air on Toonami? It would tick off parents and bore kids in the US, putting it on Toonami would be the kiss of death for this show.

I bet after they air the final episode, people who don't know better will be like "WTF mate, where's the epiloge?" and much halerity will be had.

I think they're making a special in Japan which will serve as the epilogue.

i hope you mean anime like... no, i'm not going to say it. a lot of you probably already know what i'm going to say.

actually, just because there might be hope for more anime, it doesn't mean it will be good anime.
