This is no worse than a Bratz Broadway musical, which is evidentally in the planning stages.

No worse?

Depends on whose doing it really, espically when we're talking about furries. Most of whom (at least I know personally) have the creativy of apprecate yiff art and ripping off old Final Fantasies and calling it they're own game. This Mortimer could be different but I'm not getting good feelings from this play. (Then again Furries in general always get feelings about certain things and don't really think them through. Part of they're "animal instincts" and all. BTW I'm still bashing furries I know not just the whole group in general). Still good luck to him, espically if he plans on getting it out this September. my guess he'll be saying that for years and it won't happen. (once again my own dealing with furries on they're promises to get things out).

Great, furries and Bratz. My two biggest pet peeves of all time, and they're making friggin MUSICALS about them.
I have lost all hope in humanity. If you need me, I'm going to call up some aliens and go to some planet in the vicinity of Betelgeuse.

Actually I hate musicals as well. So it's the worst of... all three... worlds... yeah.

I don't hate musicals. Infact, I love them and I have seen quite a few on Broadway these past few years. However, a musical about Furries? What the hell is going on? Has Broadway really run out of ideas like Hollywood has?

I don't think there's been a movie about furries, though.
Don't... don't argue with me on that point, I really do not want to see one if there has been.

I wasn't saying there was, but there very well maybe. I was comparing about Hollywood in general, because quite frankly, they have been running out of ideas. Broadway is becoming the same lately. Not just making a musical about furries, but just look at how many musicals are based off of movies nowadays instead of being original. I'm not saying all of those musicals based off movies are bad, but it has become an overused trend lately.

This is still in the workshop phase. It's a long way to go to get it on Broadway or in the West End. Given that a large number of people consider furries to be oddball sexual deviants, I doubt it's going to get the support it needs to actually make the jump. Granted, we do have Rocky Horror and Hedwing in there, but those were "just" transvestites and transexuals.

Wow, furry bashing. Why is this not surprising?
Not that I don't think that some aspects of the fandom are disturbing and absurd, but still. It's unlikely this'll get past the planning stage anyway.

Agreed. I don't intend my comments to construed as a bash. It's a true statement -- a lot of people are creeped out by furries and their preferences and would class them as "oddball sexual deviants." I've only known one furry to my knowledge, and he didn't seem to be a bad egg.

That's precisely what I was thinking, is this really any different?
An example of the writing:
RUSS.
So OK, I guess I’m a furry. But, where do I go? What do furries do?
GRIZZ.
Hm. Well this could take a little time. You sitting comfortably?
RUSS.
Sure.
GRIZZ.
OK
You’re new here; just got here
You don’t know what is what here
But there’s something that’s telling you to stay.
Right?
RUSS.
Right!
GRIZZ.
Right!
Your heart says to hurry,
Seek out the other furries,
And that will make all your problems fade away.
Right?
RUSS.
Right!
GRIZZ.
Wrong!
Tough to live the life the furries lead:
Come take my paw
And we’ll explore
The things you’re gonna need:
’Cause acceptance isn’t given out at random.
Petting, hugs and scritches don’t come free.
RUSS.
What’s a scritch?
GRIZZ.
There’s only so much love within the fandom
So if you want a lot,
Show us that you’ve got
Fursonality.
(sp.) You see it’s not really enough to just show up and start being a furry. If you really want to be accepted, there’s a few things you got to do.
The first thing that you need’s a fursona.
RUSS. What?
GRIZZ. Fursona!
The anthro you wanna be; that totally rocks.
RUSS.
Like, choose a species?
GRIZZ.
Yeah, like
The wolf is the archetypal loner
But a lot of people opt for...
RUSS (with sudden inspiration).
I’m a fox.
GRIZZ (dry).
That’s what I thought.
RUSS.
Yeah! I’m a small urban red fox.
GRIZZ.
Another fox, huh?
And what will you have as your name?
RUSS.
Erm, well...
I was thinking of something like “RedFox”
GRIZZ.
Should stand out.
RUSS.
D’you think that’s lame?
There’s probably hundreds the same.
GRIZZ.
It’ll do at a squeeze.
If there’s nothing Japanese.
But you only took the first step of many:
You still ain’t got your full identity
You got your name secure, but
Pure nomenclature
That’s not fursonality.
RUSS.
So what’s the difference between a human and an anthro?
GRIZZ.
Not much. Except who ever heard of an anthro that would prefer to be human?
RUSS.
So that fursona is mine now.
Can I explore online now?
GRIZZ.
Sure.
RUSS.
So where’s the other furries on the net?
GRIZZ.
Well, let me see…
There’s FurryMUCK and IRC,
Furcadia, Yerf, Furtopia, V-
CL, and Second Life and – I forget...
RUSS.
Blimey.
GRIZZ.
And you should get a livejournal and give it a theme.
RUSS.
But I’ve never blogged before!
GRIZZ.
Just relax.
RUSS.
But what do I post?
GRIZZ.
Just post every day with a popular meme
And ***** about your friends in front of their backs.
GRIZZ AND RUSS.
’Cause you got to learn to handle the drama
And learn to agree to disagree.
GRIZZ.
Never show you’re annoyed at the cursing:
You’ll avoid
GRIZZ AND RUSS.
All that
Fursonality.
The boy
Has a beast to unleash, he’s
Become a new species,
RUSS.
Head to toe.
GRIZZ.
You mean claw!
RUSS.
Right!
Every day that I spend
Here I’ll make a new friend
GRIZZ.
And, as often, a foe.
RUSS.
Flame wars! Woo!
GRIZZ.
OK, the next thing you need is a con-badge.
RUSS
What’s that?
GRIZZ.
That’s a badge that you wear at a con.
That’s a convention...
Where furs meet up in a hotel... and whatever you may have heard none of them gets it on.
RUSS.
I wanna go to furry conventions!
Buy the comics, and make some new mates,
And buy a fursuit!
GRIZZ.
But sometimes life has other intentions:
I mean, It isn’t so hard
To max out your card
When every year you’re flying six or seven times to the States.
And soon you’re buying even more artwork.
You’re addicted to FurAffinity.
Your credit’s jeopardised
Because you subsidised
your
GRIZZ AND RUSS.
Fursonality.
You need the right disposition
To achieve the ambition
You most prize.
To get your fantasies aired
You got to be prepared
To compromise.
RUSS.
Hey, look! An inflatable purple unicorn!
GRIZZ.
No, you’re hallucinating.
GRIZZ and RUSS.
Well, no-one ever said it was easy
But there’s nowhere we’d rather be.
GRIZZ.
Than chatting thru the night.
RUSS.
Givin’ friends a bite.
GRIZZ.
Settin’ flames alight
RUSS.
Working to get the right
GRIZZ and RUSS.
Fursonality.
GRIZZ.
And now you got one, you’ll never get free!
RUSS.
Suits me!

With the dialogue snippet, it just sounds like it's being written as some awkward "Lay off the furries!" thing. Seriously, no furry bashing intended, but is it needed? To be honest, I don't think that (literally) making a big song and dance about it will help the situation.

That song's kindof creepy, and it seems that Furries are not doing a good job of trying to represent themselves in a way that stops them from being frowned upon and looked at as creepy.

As someone who knows a furry and considering the fact she's a nice gal, I wanna say that the furry bashing, while justified considering their mainstream, isn't necessarily well founded because it's only based on stereotype.
Bash the mainstream, not the individual.

If furries would stop doing creepy things then people would stop thinking of them as creepy. Seriously. Not all furries are like the stereotype. I've known a few decent furries in my time. But the stereotype exists for a reason. There ARE furries out there that act like sexual deviants, and they're usually the most vocal as well, which makes people think all furries are like that. It's not fair to the furries who AREN'T like that, but I don't see them making an effort to disprove the stereotype. Some try, but most would rather hang out on messageboards moaning about "the Evil hyoomins and their opression of the poor innocent furries" rather than doing anything that might help improve the furry fandom's image. And this is coming from someone who used to spend time in the furry community. I left in disgust a few years ago for this exact reason.

I don't care if it's a stereotype; if that section of the script is any hint at what goes on in their minds then it's just... just, no.

I...that's...awful.
Being a fur myself, I wonder if that bit of the writing might be taken out of context. It might very well be satirical of furry stereotypes, as at times it's almost like this thing was written by anti-furries. Because it certainly seems that way.
If not a satire, it seems as if written by someone who's got little to no writing experience. It's not as if the net's devoid of over dramatic angst-furs who seem convinced that the world, nay the universe is against all of fur-kind And therefore most whine about it until the end of time. The sort the other furries secretly hate behind their back.
I get the feeling that if this isn't satire (and oh god, I hope it is), then I can guarantee you this thing was written by one of them.
It's really a shame. I've read some beyond fantastic furry lit and plays online that wrote literary circles around this. Hell, I could do a hell of a better job than this.

You know how the more you find out about something the more you're supposed to come to an understanding of them and realize they are not so different from you where it counts? Why is it the more I found out about furries the more I recall in horror and sympathetic embarassment for them? That play snippet is the icing on the cake. Are there really people that creepy who are also completely oblivious to their creepiness? Also, that is very badly written.
