View Full Version : I think I just had the worst milkshake known to man

So I was at McD's (my first mistake) and getting some food to go and I decided I'd get a milkshake rather than soda. I noticed they had a new Shrek promotion shake that was supposedly Mint and Chocolate. How could that be awful right? Oh but it was. First of all it was kind of brown for a green shake so it looked nasty and probably stains your teeth if you drink enough of it. Second of all it tasted horrible. Absolutely horrible. I think it was called Minty Mudslide or something like that and if they were trying to create authentic minty (or just sugary) mud flavor then I'd say they succeeded. I almost hope they just made it wrong at that McD's rather than that being the actual flavor. I guess I'll never know if it was or not. But seriously. But I'm not willing to try it again just to find out.

Well, they say what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, but I don't think that applies to this situation at all.
You're right, your first mistake was going to McDonalds. Your second was ordering a shake of any type, let alone creamed crap or whatever that one was.

I like McDonald's, but their milkshakes suck. It's like trying to suck ice cream through a straw. (Same for Burger King, Sonic, and most other fast food places.) If you want a good milkshake you can drink without your forehead caving in, go to Foster Freeze. They're the best.

I actually like the vanilla milkshakes from McDonald's, but seeing as I try to avoid eating there whenever possible anymore, I haven't had one in ages. Mint, however, I've never liked.
Chick-Fil-A milkshakes are fantastic, though.

After hearing all the buzz, I finally went to a Sonic last year, and I was like, "That's it? This food sucks." Definitely overrated. I mean, I guess they're food is 'okay,' but certainly nowhere near the level of greatness so many people make it out to be. It's pretty much just average at best.

Not really a big fan of mint chocolates (with the exception of the Andes kind), but I rarely bring myself into buying a milkshake from McDonalds. The only places where I would dare buy a shake:
Sonic

All the shakes at Mcdonald's suck now. They used to have good shakes, now they have those crappy triple thick shakes. The triple thick shakes are made with vanilla ice cream mix so they all taste like vanilla. Strawberry, chocolate, mint, whatever, they all have that vanilla taste. Not that I don't like vanilla, it's just really annoying when every single shake you get has an overwhelming taste of vanilla. Furthermore, the concept of a shake that's too thick to drink with a straw is idiotic.
I like McDonald's, but their milkshakes suck. It's like trying to suck ice cream through a straw. (Same for Burger King, Sonic, and most other fast food places.) If you want a good milkshake you can drink without your forehead caving in, go to Foster Freeze. They're the best.
Burger King used to have good shakes too. But, then they went and copied the Triple Thick Shakes from Mcdonald's. Note to Burger King: If you're going to rip-off Mcdonald's, at least make sure you copy their good ideas and not their crappy ones. You know, prior to this thread, I was under the impression that the Triple Thick Shakes were somewhat of a success since they still have them after three years or so, but I haven't seen one positive comment in this thread yet. Who is buying those crappy shakes?
I've never been to Sonic. Do they have those nasty triple thick ones too or can you actually drink them with a straw?

Well, McDonald's shakes aren't milkshakes anymore....note how they removed the word "milk"? So yeah, no longer any milk products in there to start. It's all artificial.
Outside of the fast food realm, I'm quite sad to report the Brits don't know how to do milkshakes. They get the yogurt, the strawberries, and the wee bit of banana part...but they don't do cold shakes. Agh. Germans have it right though. Yum.

Actually, the worst milkshake you could have is not really a shake, but it does contain milk.
Take one part milk, one part cola, if desired add a scoop of ice cream, stir until bored.
I got people on another forum that I no longer visit to try it. Only one lived to tell the tale.
I love the strawberry kind, and I loved the Shamrock Shakes when they had them.
Any other Brits remember "McCola?" McDonalds UK couldn't sell Coke until 2000.

??? Root Beer floats rule. The other week I found Edy's Ice Cream had put out a root beer float flavor. Heaven!
When I was in Japan McDonald's would put out a new shake flavor a couple times a year. I remember trying custard, mango... pistachio?
The best chain shakes I've had are at Steak N Shake. They actually taste like genuine dairy products. Too bad they don't have any stores here on the east coast.

The only thing I find wrong with MikkieD milkshakes is that they're too small. I know nothing about that ogre swamp variety.
But the best milkshakes are from Krispy Kreeme, and they're big, too. I can have one of those and it'd be my lunch. Sometimes I can't even finish it or else my stomach aches, cause they're so big. I never heard of ordering small.

Now I've got to wonder why you like it all honestly. Hopefully they just made mine wrong.
FTR. I like the vanilla ones just fine. I love them infact. Great for when I get two Apple Pies to go. Chocolate ones taste good but the after taste is unpleasant. It's because they use weak sause chocolate syrup.
But this shake... gosh. I guess it had a bit of minty flavor. But mostly it tasted like rotten pepto bismal.
I was hoping for something like the Jack in the Box's mint shake but as soon as I looked at it I knew I was going to be dissapointed. And even setting my expectations lower didn't help me swallow that abomination. I've never had the urge to throw a shake out my window while driving but this one had me just about ready to do it.

as soon as I looked at it I knew I was going to be dissapointed. Sorry to go off topic but that's the same way I felt about McDonald's Frozen Coke. It's near impossible to drink it until it melts and then it's virtually water. The whole thing's like an ice berg in a cup. That was last year, I think they still may have it in some restaurants. They also had Frozen Fanta Cherry but I'm sure it would have been the same.

Too small? They have like five different sizes. I think they recently brought back the 42 ounce shakes. When I used to work there I wondered who in the hell could drink a 42 ounce shake. Seriously, why would anyone want to drink that much shake? That's like, a whole days worth of calories. You'd get sick after drinking that much.

For some reason the McDonalds near me have a problem with keeping other Shake flavors out of the Vanilla shake
I once had one that had a thick layer of mint syrup(and I ordered Vanilla flavored nothing else) that penetraited the purity of the vanilla shake layer and went all the way down to the core of the beverage tainting each sip with a minty fresh flavor.
Also rogue chocolate shake reagents have more than once formed a unholy bond with the vanilla flavor making th entire shake taste like Strawberry strangely enough(makes me wonder if their strawberry shakes are just cholcoate and vanilla mixed together with food coloring)

I had my last fast-food shake years ago. After many dissatisfied sips, I've come to the conclusion that it is impossible for any major food chain to produce a real milkshake, whether because of budget, lack of materials or no way to streamline the authentic process fast enough. There has to be some reason why they only sell "partially gelatinated non-dairy gum-based beverages." Has anyone ever looked into this?
Your best bets for getting a good milkshake are from smaller outlets, or family-owned restraunts. The closest thing to a fast-food chain that offers a real milkshake is Dairy Queen. They'd have a lot of 'splaining to do if they didn't, as they've got DAIRY in the name and specialize in desserts.
The people buying the Triple Thick Shakes must be the same people who watch every version of CSI and listen to Avril Lavigne MP3s.

I avoid shakes at McDonald's and Burger King like a bad case of rust (although I might try one of BK's shakes--won two as "freebies" in their latest scratch-off contest.)
But if I had to have a shake, I'd check out the shakes at either the local Stewart's or place that sells soft, swirly ice-cream (we don't have a DQ or Carvel up here, but we have a "Bean Bag" and a Frosty Road Creamery.)

And actually, I was at McDonald's the other day with my mom and she noticed this promotion and said it sounded good so I mentioned this thread :p
I liked the McPizza they used to have, but I LOVED the Big Tasty. Stupid McDonalds stopped selling it in favour of rancid-tasting deli sandwiches. Now they only sell them as "limited time only" menu items during special promotions.
Wikipedia says that the Big Tasty "consists of a third pound beef patty, 5-inch sesame seed bun, square-cut lettuce, two tomato slices, Big Tasty sauce (which has a smoke flavour), slivered onions and three slices of Emmental cheese." They got it right.

Do you mean the Big & Tasty? That was one of the sandwiches Mcdonald's came up while they were trying to rip off the Whopper. Before the Big & Tasty there was the Big Xtra. It was basically the same thing as the Big & Tasty only it had a bigger beef patty and some weird seasoning on it. I think the bun was bigger too. I didn't think it was very good, not to mention it had a stupid name. Big Xtra? What the hell does that mean? I one time had a customer misspeak the name as Big Easy.
After the Big Xtra failed they decided to alter it by getting rid of the seasoning and making the bun and meat standard size. This was the Big & Tasty. I didn't really care for this one that much either, though I never really liked the Whopper that much anyway. The name wasn't that much better than the Big Xtra. People always got the name wrong and called it the Big & Nasty.

They used a diiferent kind of bun and pretty much had it's own special sauce and ingredients. It was pretty much a fancied-up version of the Quarter Pounder. Months later, they released three new versions of the Arch Deluxe (crispy chicken, grilled chicken, and fish).
Sadly enough, the Deluxe line only lasted less than a year, and went down as the biggest mistake in McDonald's history as it cost them a lot of money in the end. People hated it, as it was just plain awful.

The Arch Deluxe was actually really good. Much tastier than a Whopper. It had this really sweet sauce. It was kind of like a honey mustard but it tasted sweeter than most honey mustard sauces. And the bun was really great too. I think it was made of potato bread. The biggest problem with the Arch Deluxe was the horrible marketing campaign:
http://www.x-entertainment.com/articles/mcdmats/big/3.jpg
Do kids making disgusted faces at you and telling you how revolting the sandwich is make you want to buy it? How could someone come up with such a stupid marketing campaign? However, the marketing campaign does succeed at making me want to punch little kids.

I just had the Shrek shake for the first time. Because of bad reviews I took a small one, but I liked it a lot so I'll buy a few large ones to put in the fridge.
It's not supposed to be brown and green, mine was WHITE with a slight brownish tint. I don't know what they gave the threadstarter, they must not like him/her much, ne. :D
Do you mean the Big & Tasty?
No, I mean the Big Tasty. It was a European-exclusive burger.
n'[/U] Tasty"]
This burger should not be confused with the European variation called Big Tasty - First tried out under a different name in selected McDonald's Restaurants in Sweden in summer 2003, then a national release came during the autumn, and the burger got its name Big Tasty (dropping the N') and was made up somewhat differently. It consists of a third pound beef patty, 5-inch sesame seed bun, square-cut lettuce, two tomato slices, Big Tasty sauce (which has a smoke flavour), slivered onions and three slices of Emmental cheese (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emmental_cheese).
In the UK Big Tasty launched in December 2003 with the advertising slogan "Sorry Yanks, this one's for us". It retailed at £2.69 and £3.99 for a meal, and was phased out of all restaurants in August 2005 as part of the menu clear up that made way for the launch of the Deli Sandwiches. It was re-introduced to the UK menu as part of the limited edition Autumn promotion on September 27 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/September_27), 2006 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006).
In Argentina (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argentina), Austria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austria), Brazil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazil), Denmark (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denmark), Greece (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greece), Italy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italy), Norway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norway), Poland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poland), Puerto Rico (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puerto_Rico), Finland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finland), Ecuador (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecuador), and Sweden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweden), the sandwich continues to be sold under the name 'Big Tasty'. It was also launched under the name 'Big Tasty' in Romania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romania), on April 4 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_4), 2007 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007).
As an addition you can get a second variant called 'Big Tasty Bacon' (same burger as above with added Bacon-slices) in the Netherlands, Poland, Austria and in Sweden.
Swedish McDonald's has released a third variant called 'Chicken Tasty' which does not include the smoke-flavoured sauce.
No, I mean the Big Tasty. It was a European-exclusive burger.Nope, it was also released in some places in Latin America. You can still buy it in Chile, it's an obscenely large burger.

Damn, I had a crap one today. It was another McD restaurant, and they put too much of that brown stuff. I'm talking about the Shrek Shake. I ordered a big one because last time was good!
About McD staff, one thing that annoys me is no matter where I order the Shrek Shake they ask me some question that is impossible to understand (sounds like gibberish when they muffle it with no interest), then I repeat large Shrek Shake and they give it to me. I haven't seen anyone older then me working in their restaurants in a while and I guess I'm not going to.

Mcdonalds shakes are alright. Occasionally i will get one. My favorite one is around thanskgiving. They do a pumpkin pie shake. I wont go near the eggnog or that new mint mudslide one. Yuck.
Milkshakes from Steak and Shake are awesome. But they take FOREVER.
I like the eggnog one, though it's slightly sweeter than regular eggnog.
