View Full Version : How CN Can Be Saved

Here are my advices to CN.
1) The network should completely change its name so live-action shows can be aired (on weekdays) with greater frequency. If Nick and Disney could do it, why not CN? This is purely for ratings.
2) Scrap the current programming on Saturday mornings and replacing it with light-hearted shows like Foster's and Class of 3000.
3) Make a brand-new action block airing just before Toonami featuring shows like Pokemon, Ben 10, Code Lyoko, FF, ect...
4) Show marathons of CN's biggest properties and movies on Sundays.

Not a bad idea, comrade!
I suggest they call it Eek! TV because of the big properties they own, like Pokemon and Naruto, and live action like Reanimated, and crazy movies like what G4 does.

Nah! A better name for the modern-day CN would be The RACF(stands for "Ratings Always Come First") Channel.

Pssst...
Pssssssst...
C'mere... I gotta secret for you:
Television, and especially television in the form of ad-supported cable networks, depends on ratings! If something doesn't get ratings, advertisers won't pay to advertise during it and it gets pulled! It's Economics 101! I guess that makes EVERY CHANNEL the Ratings Come First Channel!
Good god. Painful.

CN will continue to move a bit more toward the live-action arena. I still think that they want the big $$ and WANT to compete with the big boys (Nick & Disney)
If another network comes in to compete for the hard-core cartoon viewers but CN forecasts more $$ in their pocket from their live action audiences they may not fight too hard to retain the hard-cores.
What's the percentage of hard core cartoon fans as compared to the rest of the viewing population? Yes, on this site it's extremely high, but in a comparison to the overall population....Does anybody know?

Wishful thinking, but I almost think it would work to everyone's satisfaction if they were to just give both networks available a makeover. Here's what I mean:
- Transfer the majority of classics to Cartoon Network, keep Toonami and Adult Swim. As well as the classic Cartoon Cartoons.
- Replace the digital channel Boomerang to basic cable and rename it KidsWB Network. It would basically consist of:
- The KidsWB line up new and recent (Everything from 2000 and up).
- It would have the recent continuing Cartoon Cartoons.
- Live Action shows would work since it is not advertised as a cartoon network.
- Keep Miguzi as the KidsWB equivelent to Toonami.
Basically Kids WB will have the current and trendy toons, and the live action and Cartoon Network would be more geared towards the family, especially adults.
As for percentage of viewers, you mean hardcord as in older viewers right? In my opinion, just because some teens and adults claim to be against cartoons, doesn't mean they are. Heck, I bet if there was a survey asking adults their opinions on cartoons (and kept the answers in confident), then the results would be the higher majority of adults support cartoons/animation.

CN will continue to move a bit more toward the live-action arena. I still think that they want the big $$ and WANT to compete with the big boys (Nick & Disney)That's good and all, but if they WANT to compete with the big boys, why bother copying what they have to offer? Plus, CN's getting their butts kicked by Nickelodeon with something that's supposed to be CN's primary programming: animation. Spongebob Squarepants, Avatar, El Tigre, and Fairly Oddparents kick CN's collective tail every single day in every time period they're on. The only reason Disney does well is because they air more girlcentric programming, which Cartoon Network has admittedly abandoned. No longer would you see shows like Totally Spies, Powerpuff Girls, or a Sailor Moon-type show on a prime position on the network, which is why girls aren't as drawn to CN as they were in the past.
If I was with CN, I'd accentuate my strengths and at least attempt to eliminate my weaknesses. CN just doesn't use what they have and have abandoned girls and older viewers (25+) in the process.
If another network comes in to compete for the hard-core cartoon viewers but CN forecasts more $$ in their pocket from their live action audiences they may not fight too hard to retain the hard-cores. What's the percentage of hard core cartoon fans as compared to the rest of the viewing population? Yes, on this site it's extremely high, but in a comparison to the overall population....Does anybody know?40%, +/- 5%.
When you add in casual viewers of shows like The Simpsons, Family Guy, or Spongebob Squarepants, non-verbal fans of older animated shows and shorts, and people with fond memories of those shows and shorts but aren't rabid about it (particularly Baby Boomers, Gen-Xers, and the MTV generation), then the percentage rises to about 80% of the total population. In the brief years ABC did bring back Schoolhouse Rock, ratings for the entire Saturday morning block did rise slightly. People still buy Flintstones vitamins and Pebbles cereal, despite The Flintstones not being on a widely-availiable outlet in five years. Bugs Bunny is still a worldwide icon despite being treated shabbily by Warner Bros. Politicians, writers, singers, and comedians still continue to reference cartoons to this day. Animation still make up a lot of viewing time for those ages 18-34, despite Cartoon Network not reporting those ratings (see, they only share the 2-11 ratings because these are the advertisers they're after). And people who don't regularly go to forums continue to buy animation collections on DVD.
Older viewers still matter and they are everywhere. Those who post, chat, and criticize are just the vocal side of the silent majority of animation fans that exist in this country.
Replace the digital channel Boomerang to basic cable and rename it KidsWB Network.
Basically Kids WB will have the current and trendy toons, and the live action and Cartoon Network would be more geared towards the family, especially adults.Sounds like a good plan, but why would it be called Kids' WB? Turner Broadcasting has no connection with that block nor the block's current broadcaster, The CW Television Network. If anything, I'd call that family-oriented network something else.
I don't think they'd name it POGO because it sounds similar to the LGBT-themed network LOGO, and viewers might be expecting a show with a cast of swamp-dwelling creatures (ask your folks and grandfolks).
Also, why would all the modern Cartoon Network shows be displaced to a network that barely anyone would get until CN turns 20? Truth be told, I don't think CN would launch a newer network until 2012 anyway, when the digital migration should be a little steadier than it is now.
(A minor sidebar: What we now call "digital cable" will likely become "standard definition digital cable," which is what it truly is, by 2010. High-definition digital cable is a growing industry and will be seen as the future equivalent of of what we now call digital cable with premium, HD-only channels and signals.)
They'll probably end up making a couple of digital subnetworks not unlike what network broadcasters are plotting (PBS affiliates currently manage three or four additional digital networks depending on the market). Who's to say we won't get a CN Too, a family network, or even genre-specific channels in the future? Perhaps the powers-that-be would be ballsy enough to launch a comedy-themed animation channel, which would be awesome as hell, in addition to a network aimed towards teens and young adults. Turner Broadcasting would be stupid to not truly embrace digital programming at its core.
The digital revolution is upon us, and the world of cable is about to change really soon.

I'm gonna take a guess that you are over 14, CN doesn't give a dam about you if you're over 14, and AS will take you right in afterwords. I don't think you and a 7 year oldd have the same intrests, and that's whose intrest they're after...
EDIT: why don'ty i respond to your stupid suggestions
1) They only have 5 shows that are live action(3 are on Adult Swim, other two are CN Video Zixx and Re-Animated Series) And why rename? Kinda stupid, sicne a name change would probably throw more viewers off the network anyway..
2) Why? CN does better than all of the major networks and kids channels(sans Nick of course). And besides, you want CN to get more ratings according to your 1st point(ownd)
3) Why? Those shows would get more ratings at satam vs 5.0,
4) Don't they already do that?

Ugh, no offense, but if you like Hannah Montanna over anything on CN, i don't see you fit to even post on this section of the board..., Nobody wants to hear your "I want my old CN blah blah blah" BS, this is to discuss about new episodes of shows, questions about shows, and discussing future CN properties
Nobody knows anything abotu when any of the new series will premire accept Chowder is in November(according to the creator's blog) and predictions that Santo and Secret Saturdays(always get 1st part wrong) will be airing in september. I'd expect December for that pile of **** they call a show(I actually had some faith in this to begin with, so i gave it a chance, and i watched the entire thing), the only thing i enjoyed was Paul Reubens(My favorite actor).
CN, at this point, is a very confused network. It doesn't know where to go. They change block layouts like four times a year. They wanted to reach older audiences, so they aired PG-13 live action movies. Now, they are going for young ones by showing shows that are about small kids. Example: Foster's, My Gym Partner is a Monkey, Camp Lazlo, and some other stuff. What happend to stuff like Johnny Bravo and I AM Weasel where main characters were adults?
I think, what they should do is, create programming that interests everyone but still is good ol' animation. They could create an hour-long block that contains shows about families. The block would compete with Nick-at Nite. Imagine CN continuing the Flintstones and Jetson with new episodes. Imagine an Addam's Family cartoon but has humor-style of the Simpsons.

Because wee ones like animals. i know i really liked Rocko and Looney Tunes when i was young(however, rugrats was my fav).
1 hour blocks are silly, and CN doesn't have the talent or money to make a revivial(Everybody on those shows are dead i think, for the most part). Addams Family is dead.

Wow.
The main two characters in Dexter's Lab were children. Cow and Chicken were children as well, with many episodes set at school. The Powerpuff Girl were in kindergarten, little Susie was very often Johnny Bravo's foil.
Honestly, Courage is really the only "comedy" CN show I can think of that didn't have kids as main characters. No wonder why it stays popular.

To Toon Overlord: Im Just Saying It As A Comparison, Sure, There Still Alot Of People Watching The Block Formally Known As Fridays (To Be Fried Dynamite In Summer '07), For Just The People Who Still Watch CN Or For People Who Just Don't Wanna Watch Junk Like FOX's Friday Programming (Or For Anti-Disney Channel Viewers), Sure, I Watch Disney Channel Almost Every Night Since 'Hannah Was On Now 5 Days A Week, And When I Hear The Words "New Episode", I Just Mark My Calenders And Watch It On That Day.
I Still Watch CN For The Following:
1. Any Of Their Orignials (This Includes Their Old Cartoon Cartoon Franchise)
2. The [adult swim] ACTN Block
3. Toonami (For Naruto, Bo^7, And 4Piece/FUNPiece)
and 4. William Street's Aqua Teen Hungerforce and Space Ghost Coast 2 Coast.

True That, I Mean, Thanks To The New MTV Generation (The Stuff That MTV Currently Has, And The Number Of People Who Now Watch Disney Channel), CN Is Struggling To Gain Back Its Viewership, By Adding Live-Action Shows, They Might Compete With The Other Channels For Prime-Time Premicy.
I Mean, Look At Celeberty Deathmatch, Due To Popular Demmand After Its Cancelation, MTV2 Decided That Canceling The Show Was (According To Nick Diamond) A Huge Mistake. And Also, Look At Futurama And Family Guy, Well, 'Guy Got Back Thanks To Culture-Baised Fashion (The Tees From Hot Topic), DVD Sales (DVDs), And [as]/TBS Plays (Ratings From [as] and TBS), And So Is Futurama, Except They're Going To Comedy Central, And There Was No Bender Tees, Just Calendars, Toys, TV Referances, And DVDs, Plus TBS/[as] Ratings...

1) Umm, yeah, i do. I know everything about this network than most people do, not like Sketch and Jeff Harris of course, but enough to know what i'm talking about. Tell me what doesn't make sense, cause most of my points are very valid.
2) Eh, i'm trying to save you from the fate i have of doing this crap instead of doing something worthwhile.
3) Oh, i'm far from that, I just don't think that converting the ways that were suggested are crazy, and you have to realize Cartoon Network isn't a Teen network, talk to Toonami and AS about that.
4) Eh, that was a bad point on my part..
5) You shoud be able to infer i meant 2006 because it's 2007 ratings thread for atam, and the current network season is running from fall 06 to summer 07
6) I know, but You'll soon realize that the network will continue to drift away from what you expect or hope, and that after seeing a topic like this evcery week, you get sick of seeing these topics. And sure CN does run a few shows a little more than they should, but look at nickelodeon. I can watch Spongebob 5+ times a day, along with FOP and Neutron at 4 i think. CN is hardly as bad with reruns, their problem is that they have plenty of shows that they could run.

Here are my advices to CN.
1) The network should completely change its name so live-action shows can be aired (on weekdays) with greater frequency. If Nick and Disney could do it, why not CN? This is purely for ratings.
The whole 'live action on CN' thing seems to be one of the most debated issues on this board, no?
It depends on who the live action will appeal to and who would be cast. Me, I flat-out HATE CN's future plans for "Fried Dynamite" (why did they decide to cast some loser from some third-class R&B-boy-band, i.e. Bryan Breeding?!), and I wish we had the Tara Sands-era "CN Fridays" back.

First of all, I would take Foster's over any classic. If you want to see the classics so badly, get Boomerang or Toon Disney. If you want more action cartoons especially anime, get the Anime Channel. CN is not a charity. It is a business. If you want CN to show more action/classic cartoons, figure out a way to get more kids watching those shows. There is a reason why most reruns tend not to do well. There is also a reason why Re-Animated did well. We are living in a capitalistic society. If there are demands, there will be supplies. Instead of going with something unachievable, be more realistic and try to adapt. This is why CN is bringing people who worked at Nick and Disney to the network to help devise a new direction.

We would have significantly fewer topics that way.

All I have to say is that the day Cartoon Network ceases to be "Cartoon" Network is the day I stop watching television.

Does it? Obviously it brings in the ratings which is why it is stripped at so many times of the day. Now, you have an opinion of the show, and that's great. However, opinions and network rating rarely if ever coexist. Otherwise, I would have gotten to enjoy Big O Season 3.

Remove all live-action programming (unless it's hybrid and/or in some way related to animation/comics)
Air the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies again. And while we're at it, air Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, etc. again.
Sign a deal with Troma to make original animated programming (like some kid-oriented shows, like a revival/update/sequel to Toxic Crusaders; plus some truly twisted stuff for Adult Swim).

see above; you can't miss it
Kids, take note: This is precisely how NOT to present an opinion.

That... doesn't even grammatically make sense.
How CN Can Be Saved
It's beyond saving at this point.
