View Full Version : Opinion: What About a TZ Convention?
Kury Wagner

This is a topic that constantly comes up: What about a TZ convention? Just a mass gathering of members, nice fun-time and all that.
Any opinions on this? Some people were saying NY would be a good idea, since sooo many TZers are from the East Coast. Or is there a lot of life in Alabama? o.O Tell me stuff! ... erm, stuff that's related to this, please.
Not so good in a crowd, plus meeting some of the guys here on TZ would just be aqward.

I really don't think I'd want to meet the other members here. Nothing personal, it's just that chatting about cartoons online has nothing to do with whether or not you'd get along in real life. It's better to pick your friends based on what type of a person they are, not what interests they have.

But what would you exactly do at a TZ Convention? Sell junk? Dress up as your favorite member? Tell anecdotes to large crowds that end with: "And when I turned around, all the moderators were wearing eyepatches!"?

I think it would be a fun idea. Not exactly sure how I'd convince my parents, but if there's a will there's a way right...?
And everyone should have name tags, too! XD

Why not just various TZers meet up at local conventions and such? I'm sure there's plenty of TZers at, say, ComiCon each year. Everyone could find out beforehand on the board who's going and make plans to meet up somewhere at the con, even if it's just for a few minutes to say "hi" and stuff.
I've met a few people from message boards at conventions, and it's always nice to see and talk to them in person, even if it's just once. Heck, one of my best friends for the past six years was someone I knew on-line and then met at a con.

If it was being held in the UK, then I'd certainly consider it. But seeing as most TZers are American, it'd have to be held somewhere there...and I can barely even afford a train ticket, let alone a transatlantic flight.
Still, if money weren't a problem, then yeah, I'd be game. I mean, provided no one here is a closet axe murderer or anything, then it'd probably be kinda fun.:D

I'd be up for it. I have a lot of good friends on TZ these days, many of whom I'd love to meet in real life(most of them probably know who they are).
So if this actually got put together, and wasn't on the West Coast, I'd be there in a heartbeat.

I think it would be awesome meeting members and chatting up a storm about what is going on in their lives and what not. I've always thought that a good place to meet too would be in the central part of the country like St. Louis because then some of us would not have to travel all the way to the other side of the coast just to do this convention. But thats just my opinion.

If it were a real convention, with sessions on various aspects of animation, etc., it could be interesting.
If it were a bunch of Toonzoners hanging around in little cliques, then no. I have no desire to return to high school.

Assuming we could find a weekend that wasn't claimed by some other fandom convention and that we could get a place to meet and the money to rserve it all and.....
You get my drift. It would be a cool idea, but I don't really see it being possible. How many TZers are going to Otakon this year? We've tried to have a TZ get together at Otakon before, but it never seems ot work out right.

We can get together at a restaurant in New York City or something.
Or, we can meet in front of 4Kids headquarters and stage a massive protest against the butchering of anime.

Wouldn't work for me since I have no friends here, and if I do try to make friends there people would most likely ask me who I am on here, and I'll say,"Dead_Ninja" and they'll go like, "Omg," And I'll be like," " And then they'll go, "GET HIM!" How many TZers are going to Otakon this year? We've tried to have a TZ get together at Otakon before, but it never seems ot work out right.I was all for one the last couple years but nobody wanted to organize one. There's so much that goes on at Otakon it's practically impossible to schedule a meet and greet. Also I won't be going this year, so if there does end up being one I'm gonna be upset I missed it.
Nothing personal to all of you folks, but there really don't seem to be too many people who are compatible with each other. Some of us are here because we aren't able to fulfill social desires in real life. Maybe it's just because we don't have local friends or maybe it's because we just can't function that way. Besides, would meeting in person really be worth the massive effort it would take to organize a convention and travel to one specific location?
It just seems like we'd be making Toon Zone more than it needs to be. Actually, that's not at all what I meant to say but I can't figure out how to phrase it properly.

I feel the same way. I'd only go on TZ to find out any news and to see people's thoughts on certain shows. Now I spend less time reading posts, and more time chatting with people from TZ. I like that I actually got to know many TZers more personally as friends, and I'd love to meet them all.

I don't think Toon Zone is big enough to warrant its own convention. No one would be willing to make the trip unless some kick-ass guests, panels, and dealers' rooms were set up (and I don't see any TZ members lining up to donate money for those things :p)
But I think that arranging meetings at conventions is a great idea. I go to Comic-Con every year and I would totally attend a Toon Zone meet-up if one were arranged there!

I certainly wouldn't oppose to it, I mean, it's not that I'll be able to go to begin with.
But I think that an actual convention with all of us running into each would feel kinda weird. I like a lot of you, but I can think of at least ten people I'd hate to make a part of my actual life. If the debates we've gotten here are any indication, I can only imagine how the massacre would be like.

Basically, my thoughts on this have always been that if a TZ Con or some related get-together were to occur, it would be done on a regional basis at best (Northeast, Southest, Midwest and so on). And if not that, then by State, country, province and so on. I don't really see anything on a big scale happening, and getting everyone (or even some of everyone for that matter) would just be a nightmare.
For amusement's sake, TZ Con were to ever get off of the ground, I'd probably wander around for a bit, shake a hand or two, and then ditch the whole thing and look around for a decent restaurant in the area.

Something tells me there is some sort of enthusiast website (is that the right phrase?) that do annual gatherings. Rent a hotel hall for a weekend, have a few guest speakers, meet and greet, etc. It wouldn't be that weird for Toon Zone to do it, provided enough people went (which I most likely would).
But since this is TZ, it'd get crazy. If we equate the internet to real life (something we never should), expect trolls, flame wars (with actual flame), and a representative from Oprah's magazine.
Some sites do run their own pannels at Otakon. Maybe we could snag some late night time and run a Toon Zone get together panel?

It sounds ok, but make sure you do it at a anime convention or something.See, but that's the thing, not everyone goes to anime or comic cons. I don't. I don't particularly like the idea of going to an anime convention. [I'm a girl, I'm scared, okay?] I want my TZ convention!! >.<

Anime conventions aren't that scary, though. You'd do just fine.

Well, I'm a geek and sunlight seems to agree with me alright. But maybe nerds have more issues with it, I dunno.

See, this whole con is a bad idea. If you think anime conventions are creepy, wouldn't meeting with a bunch of random people from online be even creepier? I mean, really, there's not even much to do at a TZ con. Temple Fugate is right. After the initial "hooray, we get to see each other in real life" bit if over, we'll probably get bored and leave.

The majority of the people on this forum are high school students, anyways. It's not likely they could get their parents to get them a ticket to fly across the country to have a ten minute meeting with some random guys they know on the internet. And the majority of the people in the poll voted "no" or "sounds difficult." I just think the con would get maybe ten people to show up, and it would be a waste of money.
