Well, we have a new anime debuting tonight and it's Blood+. I've heard some good things about this show, so let's see if they are right.

It's really good for the first three quarters or so, but after that it unfortunately gets repetitive and boring.

Plus. I think it was tacked on so the show wouldn't be confused with the movie Blood: The Last Vampire and its mangas (they all share the same source material but they aren't strictly connected) or any other show that might have Blood in the title (like Trinity Blood, Black Blood Brothers, or BloodReign). Plus you can't copyright or trademark a word such as "blood" - it has to have something else with it to have that happen.

The best way to follow up a vampire anime with the word "blood" in the title...another vampire anime with the word "blood" in the title.
Dang. Is this how far they've gone with a lenient S&P?
Apart from that opening bit, it's kinda boring so far.
Normally the big ugly monster in the corner of the room would concern me more than two people appearing to make out.
I hope this doesn't become a monster-of-the-week series.
Aaarrg! The credits roll right when the fight starts!

That OP sounded completely out of place after seeing that girl just slice up everyone.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0352372/ (reads through list) Ooooh, yeah. I'd be patient too. The dub comes off as a little corny right now but I'll give it some time, seeing as it's only episode 1.
As for the episode itself, it's a start. Kind of a shame the action didn't really kick in until it was almost over, but oh well. There's potential, if nothing else, for high quality animation, especially since it's Production I.G., and we got a bit of that already.

I liked it. Lots of suspense and horror elements, plus girls in short skirts and the occasional light yuri scene. :p
For a first episode, it was good. Obviously they had to do all of the character entrances and stuff, so the bulk of it was boring. However episode two is looking to start off with a bang, given the cliffhanger.
I give it a thumbs up, so far.

So is this have any continuity with the movie? Because the Saya here is a lot different than Saya in the movie. Not really. The movie and the show share some characters (like Saya and David) and some plot points (both were/are set in Okinawa and have connections to the Vietnam War). However, Blood: The Last Vampire and Blood+ also have a lot of big differences, such as Hagi (he's not in the film), the time period (the movie is set in the late 1960s but the Vietnam stuff we're seeing here closer to the end of the War, plus we are also have a current era plot going on), and the two Saya's history seem to differ in huge ways (I won't explain that right now because it is a spoiler).
I have to admit that when I saw this show originally through fan channels I spent most of the first ten episode trying to figure out how they were connected, only to finally give up and accept they really aren't all that connected. Re-watching the first episode last night I realized that by accepting that this show isn't that closely linked to the Blood: The Last Vampire may make the series work better this viewing.
So I think it is best to see Blood: The Last Vampire and Blood+ as two shows existing in different universes but having a original concept universe connecting them - similar to how there are different universes for Gundam shows (but all shows go back to MSG) or how U.S. comic books often work (or have worked in the past) when they have more than one backstory for a hero. Both the movie and the show share things but they are not really the same stories - at least IMO.

That's exactly what I was thinking. In the movie, Saya's tough, competent, and hardcore. In this show so far, she's acliché anime girl; with the awkward 'retard' run, the lack of any sort of ability, and the annoying voice.
Hopefully, when she recovers from her amnesia she'll return to her cold killer ways. :anime:

As series openings go Blood+ was good but left a little to be desired in some areas. The animation was solid, not quite Trinity Blood level but a cut above most anime today. The music was good but low key in many parts. The voice actors did also a good job overall. The story and characters were the only parts that left something to be desired. Being the first episode the characters don’t have much of a chance to be fully define yet so we have to wait to see how they grow on us(especially considering we were introduce to no less than six major characters over the course of the episode). While some characters got a good introduction, others felt a bit boggle and disconnected from the rest of the episode. The story was also mixed. On setting up the mood and style of the series the story did a superb job with a sense of foreboding hanging over the setting, with our main character suffering from schizophrenic flashbacks, finally ending with straight up horror and lots of blood. The structure of the story on the other hand felt a bit disjointed and rushed at times, and did not seem to flow as well as it could. That being said the story did managed to set up some interesting plot threads (I am particular interested in plot line with the American military and the Frenchmen) and the ending left you wanting to see what happens next for the main character. Overall I thought it was a good introduction to the series, and I will be tuning in next week to see what happens. A high recommendation to anime and horror fans.
Blood+: First Kiss
Overall grade – B good

I'm thinking more with how we have 3 different Ghost In The Shell universes (the original comics, the Oshii movies, and the Stand Alone Complex franchise). But, thanks for clearing up on how to view B:TLV and B+.
As for the first ep, this looks good. The cold open was brutal, very violent and sets the tone of how much bloodshed we will see. Saya looks more like a typical anime girl than the cold-hearted killer from TLV. I'm thinking she will fluctuate between this stereotype and the old Saya as the series progresses. But, overall, I am impressed with Sony's third anime series attempt (1 and 2 were Cyborg 009 and the most recent Astro Boy revival). Now, as for how Sony will promote the series (as well as how it will be released on DVD), time will tell.

As fan of undeath, I am a little appalled by the fact this "vampire" isn't typical of the species. Then again, neither was Trinity Blood. Even so, I have seen Blood: The Last Vampire. I only hope this Saya is as bloodthirsty as the last one. Mostly I'm glad that IG Productions is working on it. They do excellent work and this anime is no exception. The voice acting has been pretty good but I wonder if they aren't over-extending Freeman on this series with what felt like 3-4 characters. Even so, I am looking forward to seeing the next episode and hopefully Saya drawing on her "heritage" to become what I expect of her.

So when you go back to school in the middle of the night to get your shoes and you witness your coach get grabbed by a huge gray hand and pulled into a tree, with blood dripping afterwards do you:
1) Run like your on fire or
2) Stand directly where he was and call for him.
Apparantly she chose 2. Either way, the show looks interesting. I'll probably keep watching since I need something else to watch besides Bleach now that Trinity Blood is gone.

Three points:
1)That opening was so f-d up. I never expected to see a mother and a baby run straight through like that. The bar has certainly been raised in my personal gore meter.
2)That scene where the gym teacher got snatched up was pretty malicious. Really felt like a good horror movie.
3)For some reason, I really dig that ending sequence. The character art is really eyecatching for me.
Quick question: Anybody have the episode titles Sony is using for Episodes 2-4? And I mean Sony's titles, not some random fansubber's titles.
As for the actual episode itself:
- Hated the prologue. Few things turn me off quicker than unnecessary gore and 30 gallons of blood spraying everywhere.
- Things turned around a bit after that. Saya definately reminded me a lot of Hitomi from Esca, not just in terms of the basic setting, but her character design too.
- Whew, dodged a bullet for now. I was fearing that Crispin Freeman would be playing yet another brooding badass, which is getting almost as boring as Steven Blum's "cool guy" voice. Thankfully, neither of Crispin's characters have that stock voice, so it's all good. Even made up through Crispin's awesome French accent.

I agree with many people that there were several slow moments in this episode. But I found myself willing to put up with it as a way of establishing Saya's life as a normal, average high school girl before she turns into a crazed chiropteran killer.

Neat. I've never seen an anime set in Okinawa before. About time that part of Japan got some spotlight. So, it IS possible to get an Asian Massage in Asia. ;)
The opening sequence left me totally confused, though. I coudlnt' tell if that girl with the sword was fighting with the vampires ( "mice" ) or against the vampires. She seemed to be killing both vampires and humans. Or were those Vietnamese humans about to become vampires?

Not to sound entirely looney, but am I the only one who found the interactions between the musician and Saya to be hilarious? He rarely talks, and then comes on to her after cutting himself. And he forces his bloody hand all into her face, and she just pauses awhile before running away and screaming that funny phrase. Yet I remember hearing something similar about this Air Base being downsized and/or closed last year on the news, as well. I do know that the U.S. wasn't talking about handing it over to the Japanese due to a falling out. It had something to do with the military downsizing/realignment that's been going on for the past 15 or so years and that it was becoming too expensive to run the base. That said, I'm not finding anything through a simple Google search, so it may have been something a Congressional committee was discussing and dropped (however, I did find this article, FWIW http://stripes.com/article.asp?section=104&article=43046&archive=true ).

That said, I'm not finding anything through a simple Google search, so it may have been something a Congressional committee was discussing and dropped (however, I did find this article, FWIW http://stripes.com/article.asp?section=104&article=43046&archive=true ).
Actually Kadena Air Base is being affected by the base realigning, but the base is being expanded for F-35 Lighting airframe, and the recent arrival of the U.S. Army’s 1-1 ADA Battalion, a Patriot Pac III unit, from Fort Bliss Texas. The arrival of the Army Battalion caused some protest on Okinawa, but did not affect the bases status with the Japanese government. Below is a link to Wikipedia article on the base, and the bases homepage.

Pretty good first episode...then again, TB also had a pretty good first episode as well.
Not comparing the two, just saying. I hope Blood+ can keep it up.
i'm gonna put this out there now before people get their hopes up: the beginning of this show is slllloooowwww... maybe even slower than Eureka Seven. the plot doesn't start getting really good until around 12 in my opinion. there's some good episodes in between though.
I really didn't like the first episode of TB and the first episode of Blood+ here gave off pretty much the same impression. Unimpressed by TB's first bloody sequence; unimpressed by B+'s first bloody sequence. It is wrong that people are dying en masse left and right and I really don't find it entertaining?
(And don't say slower than E7's first half... you're really gonna turn people off now.)
Someone else mentioned that the slowness in the school yard with Saya and her friend Kaori reminded them of how 'Escaflowne' started, and I'd agree with that. Way too slow, way too peaceful.
Then came the teacher being snatched up into the tree.
No, really! I didn't expect that to happen! I thought he'd look and say he found nothing and that Saya's crazy, and that's all for the night. So I kinda did a 'turn away,' just like Saya, and then... heard the guy get snatched up. Man...
Maybe because I'm not much of a horror fan, this show may win me over if it succeeds in scaring the life out of me. For the moment, though... not impressed, but not turned off either.
"First Kiss": 3/5.

Never heard of Vizio.
And I bet you it looked better on my 40" Samsung 1080p LCD using the master feed of Cartoon Network.
Never heard of Vizio.
Eh? They and Olivia have commercials everywhere, advertising "cheap HDTVs."
