Are women being portrayed negatively in the show?

All the women shown in the show are viewed in a demeaning manner.
Examples where they are:

Crystal(like the champagne) is a hoe
Black lady protesting at R.Kelly trial
Tom's wife; seems to be the submissive one in the relationship

Anything else that can be seen? Or something to contradict my assertions?

How is Tom's wife protrayed negatively in any way?

Jasmine, the most prominent female on the show, is portrayed in a positive way.

Moe Jackson's wife was portrayed positively.

But women really aren't a big focus in the show.

I think this is one of those cases where if you want it to be true, you can make it true, but it's meaningless.

Men are hardly portrayed positively.

Riley is thuggish, disrepectful, ignorant, felonious, and crude.

Huey is narrow-mindedly resistant to authority, over-willing to blame his people's problems on others (only to be genuinely shocked when he learns it isn't always the case), and will gladly say rude and inappropriate things even when it could potentially cost his grandfather a job or new friend.

Grandpa and Ed Wuncler...do I really need to list their faults?

The point is, this show is a comedy. Some of the best sources of its comedy are the faults of the characters. Are women portrayed negatively at times? Without a doubt. So are men, white people, black people, old people, young people, bald people, blind people, rich people, poor people... Are women portrayed more negatively than men? Not so much.

Are there any other instances in the first season where women are shown in a negative light? Or where they are being empowered?

The show makes fun of anything. Not just woman. They're not the only one's being viewed under a "negative light".

There are cases of every group of people being portrayed negativley on that show. There are negatively portrayed men AND women on the Boondocks and there are negativly portrayed characters of EVERY RACE as well.

But more than that, the show is a COMEDY, not a documentary. Making fun of people is what the show does.

Are you writing a paper on negative portrayals of women in the media for a class?

I love how people do that online. "What do you think of the existential meaning of life?" I'm just asking, not writing it for class or anything.:p

Not to interrupt...

But, the show it's self -though it can be funny- makes everyone look bad. It basic focus is on stero types and I don't approve. In some instances...IE the Christmas episode...The show does have a bit of a phillisophical standpoint.
All in all though, the show is just sick in how it portrays people in general.

Have you even looked at old cartoons. Besides it's a COMEDY, they also make white people look bad. This show is NOT ment to be taken seriously.

The whole show is about satireing of stereotypes. The only way that they can be attacked is to blow them to the point that they're so ridiculous that people see just how thin they are. And if there is one thing that i have learned is that those who bash stereotypes still hold them. At the end of the day everyone holds them, we use them to help anticipate what to expect, we build them all them time and they are rewritten. Plus stereotypes are icons in a majority of their and shows like the Boondocks attack them through satire.

Haha, Yes I am :D

Big fan of the show and I'm not trying to put it down but I have to use the femenist approach and examine the show. I was just looking for other peoples opinions on the subject. Not trying to get you to do my homework.

I would say South Park (or hell, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, where the only women are either old whores or porn stars, or Sealab 2021, where one female's a slut and the other is usually called "Black Debbie.") demeans women a lot more than The Boondocks.

Then again, South Park does that to literally everybody.

ehk..

well, let's put it simply.

women are people

men are people

people are portrayed negatively in most comedy.

so, everyone gets something aimed at them.

welcome to equality.

EVERYBODY is portrayed negatively on the Boondocks. It's not an optimistic show.

Yeah, didn't you see the censored version of the episode? They replace Crystal with a talking hoe.

I disagree. I get more social commentary from the show than comedy. Heck, some have even said it's downright preachy.

I find this scary. I'm hoping either you were rushing when you typed this, English is not your native language or you're very young.

Don't be a wet blanket. They don't actually mean that stuff. It's just hilarious racism.

Sadly, Boondocks is very true to reality about how women are treated in it.

Huey: Riley, not all women are hos. We're talking about 8-9 percent...

Riley: I don't mean *****es as an insult, I mean *****es as a deragatory name for women.

In musical culture (do I really have to specify which genre? ;) ), it's okay to refer to women as hos and *****es because nobody has really had a huge problem with it, which is sad but very true. The thing with The Boondocks is although what they say maybe bad, it's often the truth of the world we live.

Despite not having watched The Boondocks, I still disagree with your comment. Mainly because, it makes no sense.

All in all though, the show is just sick in how it portrays people in general.

I assume, then, that you must also loathe The Simpsons. Seeing as how that show does nothing but highlight the flaws of people in an American society.

Though I do understand where the hatred for the show comes from. Unlike The Simpsons (well, old Simpsons), McGruder is hit and miss with the punch-lines and humor of this show. It's a very thin line between comedy and an actual rant, and the fact that it feels like a rant sometimes is probably what aggravates those who watch it.

Don't get me wrong. I like the show as a whole, but I do feel the comedy is VERY hit and miss. Sometimes I'm laughing hysterically, and othertimes I'm thinking to myself, "Stfu and learn how to make your messages subtle in humor Aaron, please k thx". But people can also argue that the show is meant to walk on this thin line between a rant and humor, because in a way it's SUPPOSED to highlight how stupid and frustrating certain things in our culture are (he does focus a lot of attention onto the current hip-hop culture in general, as well as how the general attitude is of what a typical black man or woman is like in today's society, like with the men and women and how they act on camera).

Politically, yeah, it does preach. But I find the humor in the show is definitely more frequent, whereas Boondocks jokes do miss more than I'd like to wish.

Well, Jasmine is a positive character. In fact, I think she's the only positive character on the entire show.

Maya Angelou did kick the crap out of Gin Rummy in "Let's Nab Oprah" - well, not sure how empowering that was, she was just trying to escape and they were pretty incompetent kidnappers ...
