As of now, the only studio that has not released any of their cartoons at all is Paramount/Republic.
WB's cartoon debut is "Neverending Story II" with Box Office Bunny as an extra (Dolby surround, too.)
Disney has been releasing cartoons has extras for some time and will be putting out two 26 cartoon compilations soon. (Note: They're uncut, too.)
Fox's cartoon's...are owned by other companies.
Columbia has released a Gerald McBoingBoing short on the 5000 Fingers of Dr. T's DVD.
Universal has released some Abbott and Costello DVD's with Woody Woodpecker shorts.
MGM has released a Pink Panther DVD.
Some DVD's worth mentioning are...
Image's "Cartoons that Time Forgot" series (2 Ub Iwerks volumes, 1 Van Buren volume) and Lumivisions Windsor McCay and Felix sets.
Disney will be the first studio to release an original compilation of cartoons to DVD (MGM's Pink Panther DVD is a clone of a previous laserdisc.)
There's still a huge amount of cartoons that have yet to be released on DVD or even VHS and Laserdisc!
What cartoons would you like to see on DVD and how? (presentation, extras, video, audio, menus, choice of shorts...)

Universal has released some Abbott and Costello DVD's with Woody Woodpecker shorts.
That's news to me!! Do you have any more information? I knew Universal had some Woody / Lantz shorts on the A&C VHS tapes, but didn't know they were on DVD too!

Universal's A&C DVDs have no WW cartoons on them.

I'd like a boxed set with all 26 episodes of the 1960s original Jonny Quest show.
I'd also like a boxed set with all 26 episodes of the 1970s Hanna Barbera Godzilla cartoon. My current avatar is Godzookie from that show.
I'd like DVDs of all the classic WB shorts. I guess one big boxed set might not be practical. But a bunch of individual discs would make sense. Maybe release a few discs at a time, once every 3 months or so. They would sell like crazy. Why aren't they available yet? Why isn't there even one disc on the market yet?

Awwwww............... :(
Also, another error in Patrick's original message:

What about WB's TOM & JERRY'S GREATEST CHASES DVD? Also, the Panther DVD was a "clone" of a previous VHS collection ("JET PINK"), not an LD.

Box Office Bunny was released theatrically with the Neverending Story II. So it's nice that they'll be on the same DVD.
How do we find out which WB classic shorts were released with which classic WB movies in the theater all those years ago? For example, what short was released with Casablanca back in the 1940s?

That's a DVD set I'd love to buy: The Universal cartoon library... everything including the Color Classics, Swing Symphonies, right up to Woody Woodpecker. As a matter of fact, I might like that more than a WB box.
WHAT AM I SAYING??!!??
.....OF COURSE I'd like a DVD Box collector's edition of all the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies. One big whopping box set with EVERY WB theatrical cartoon (and others too)- actually, 1003 cartoons divided by approximately 16 cartoons each disk (in a high resolution format) would work out to be about 62 DVDs....
Well, if they were released en masse, that would insure the inclusion of the uncut originals and banned stuff..... because no mommy would buy junior a collection of cartoonies for that price.... that spells "Collectors Only, Please"
I'd also like a DVD box of all the Family Guy episodes- but that's just my speculation! We're just dreaming, right?

Here is what I would like to see on DVD or Video....
Columbia/sony cartoons "Krazy Kat", "Scrappy", "Fox And Crow"
Terrytoons the entire library
Universal/Mca "Woody Woodpecker", "Andy Panda", "Oswald The Rabbit"
And saving the best for last:
TWELVE MISSING HARES:THE COMPLETE AND UNCUT BUGS BUNNY COLLECTION
Hey Time Warner, are you reading this???

www.dvdfile.com says that WW cartoons are on the A&C DVD's.
About the T&J DVD...I thought that was also a VHS to DVD re-do. (amazon.com has a tape with the same title and contents)

Not really. The VHS and DVD of TOM & JERRY'S GREATEST CHASES came out at the same time. The DVD includes two cartoons *not* on the VHS version ("Jerry and the Lion" and "Mice Follies", plus "The Worry Song" scene from Anchors Aweigh which also isn't on the VHS video).

all of the family guy eps
all of king of the hill eps
now for the wb toons
all of the un-pc stuff bosko-bunny
billy joel soon to be come the classical man! fan
My, this is a tough question, and now it even applies to me (I've got a DVD player now!!!) Let's see, I'd like:
All the looney Tunes on DVD, or at least a fair amount from various directors and time periods. A "Complete and Uncensored Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies Collection" would be a dream come true. I'd like for them to release it in parts, with a few years at a time, so that people who can't pay one enormous sum of money at once can afford it, and also so more not collectors can buy whatever cartoons they want, ignoring the 40s cartoons, 50s cartoons, and so on if they wish to do so.
An MGM cartoons collection, with all Cinemascope cartoons in letterboxed format.
a Fletcher Studios collection.
I'll think of more later.

I forgot to list my "want list" for cartoon DVD's...
Looney Tunes & Merry Melodies: The Complete Collection
Specs:
- Remastered audio and video from the original sources (Picture from new transfers from original prints and audio from original audio recordings)
- 4 hours of cartoons per disc. (roughly 26 cartoons)
- commentary by cartoon historians (Like Lenoard Maltin, Will Friedwald and Jerry Beck)
- Extras: Lobby cards for each cartoon, picture gallery of drawings, storyboards, etc
Since WB owns all their cartoons now, they should release each volume as a year (For example, 1929-1932 on Vol. 1, 1933-1934 on Vol. 2)
No colorized or edited versions.
This would take around 40 discs, so perhaps the first set would be 1929-1939, 2nd: 1940-1949, 3rd: 1950-1959, 4th: 1960-1969, 5th: 1987-present with TV specials, misc. cartoons, commercials, full length movies, etc.
I'd also like to see a similar Popeye set (With all the Fleischer cartoons (1933-1942) in set one and the Famous cartoons (1942-1957) in the 2nd set.
If WB DID put out 4 sets of DVD's, I'd buy them (Even if I have to sell blood!)

You might as well ask why there are more recent movies than classic movies on DVD so far. It's simple. They're still working on putting the classics on DVD. It's still a fairly new format.
All the WB cartoons would kick a*s, and perhaps I'm a bit obssessed with it, but.. The Komplete Fleischer Koko Kartoons as a five-volume DVD set! They need to work on at least SOME form of the Komplete Koko NOW!
specs:
presentation- I think the cartoons by themselves in the original aspect ratio would be just fine.
extras- A history of the creation of the series, an explanation of how they combined the live action and animation, etc.
video- Nothing much, just make 'em as clear as possible and do the ol' digital remastering if neccesary.
audio-piano music ala Volume 1 of Video Dimensions' Koko videos. (Volume 1 in particular because volume 2 has lousy canned music instead)
menus- Hmm.. it would be cool to have a GIF of Koko jumping out of the inkwell when you click on each cartoon title and going back in when you exit and choose the next one.
choice of shorts- two versions: one with music and one without, for "purists"

I remember seeing newsreel footage (it might have been from BUGS BUNNY SUPERSTAR?) that showed a theater marquee that was playing James Cagney's YANKEE DOODLE DANDY along with BUGS BUNNY GETS THE BIRD.

I'd like to see a DVD of the entire UPA theatrical output. I would also like to see as many of the independently produced Academy Award winning and/or nominated shorts on a DVD set. Getting the rights would be the hardest part to this set.

I share Andrew's enthusiasm for The Komplete Fleischer Koko. As for the music, I think organist Gaylord Carter does a great job scoring silent movies. If he is no longer avaliable, I would try to get the Beau Hunks, a group that does an astounding job of recreating period music; their recordings of the background music from Hal Roach shorts are awesome!

I'd like them to do an LT/MM DVD series that would include cartoons from a given year on each volume. For example, 1930 would include all cartoons from that year, and possibly the 2 Bosko pilot cartoons. What they could do is release one from each decade each release date (For example, a 1930's one, a 1940's one, 50's, and 60's). Each disc could have one or two years depending on the output at the time. Since they are technically not part of the regular series, a collection of wartime films such as Snafu and Hook should get a volume, as should the half hour TV specials. If they really wanted to go crazy, they could release a DVD with all of the Academy Award and Academy Award nominated toons all in one place. Plus, another volume should include all of the "new" cartoons, such as "Box Office Bunny", "Blooper Bunny", "Duxorcist", "Pullet Surprise", "Chariots of Fur", etc.

About a year ago, I heard that Max Fleischer's son, Richard Fleischer was taking the matter into his own hands. He is trying to get the rest of his father's cartoon library onto home video/DVD and release some of the other classics such as: Koko The Clown, Talkartoons, Screen Songs, Stong Age Cartoons, and the rest of the film library.
STAY TUNED!

a revival of the Complete Tex Avery on DVD COMPLETELY unedited. And all of Popeye's Cartoon's ever made and Every Bugs Bunny Cartoon ever made COMPLETELY unedited. And the new Complete Tex Avery should include every cartoon he made including his WB cartoons
But they'd never get the rights to his Lantz stuff.
I suppose they could release compilations from directors. A "Complete Friz Freleng," "Complete Bob Clampett," "Complete Frank Tashlin," ect, ect would be great.

Compliations? CRINGE!!!! Compilations wouldn't be great at all. With the growth of DVD there's no reason why the entire WB collection couldn't be released. A little browsing at Amazon, it looks like every Star Trek episode is on it's way to being released... there are 32 discs you can buy now. Same is true for The Twlight Zone (46 discs.) A fourteen disc collection of the Monty Python's Flying Circus is out and The X-Files 4th Season will be out this fall (73 episodes already.)
I'll be honest and say here that for the first time, because of Jack's post, I thought about how LT/MM compilations would be better than nothing... but it would make me cringe, better than nothing but unacceptable. It would NOT be enough.
I think compilations are needed, though. The whole collection might be a tough sale and the average consumer ain't gunna shell out the big bucks.
Here's my 1st idea on what they should do (my wish)
(subject to change with further thought on the matter):
WB's initial public offering:
Limited Edition box set, every cartoon (+ extras)
(maybe Set 1 & Set 2 'cause they'd be darn big & expen$ive)
Then start releasing periodically:
-every cartoon in 5 or 10 year Volumes (same extras)
-various compilation 2-disc sets mixed in (Bugs, Tweety, etc)
The compilation discs, i think, should be by character and theme, not by director 'cause they'd really be for bigger sales, you know, like "greatest hits" that mom or dad might buy for their little ones, or that the casual cartoon fan might get at Walmart or from Columbia House, without any or very little B&W or "objectionable" material.
Yup, that's what I'm thinkin' right now. I'm all typed out and my head hurts from thinkin' so much so ahh, that's all folks. Have a nice day :)
I never said director compilations were preferred, I've already said how I'd like the WB cartoons to be released several times, but how about a more descriptive version...
I'd really like a compilation of every 3-5 years in smaller sets (so it doesn't cost an arm and a leg because not all collectors are rich, but I guess they could also have a large lump set.)with all the cartoons in the order they were made, with everything WB made, even non-LTs and MMs in the mix like Snafu, Bugs Bunny Bond Rally, and So Much For So Little, ect placed in. The cartoons would be uncensored and restored with original titles (preferrably) with there original release season rings restored so we can see the progression of the colors, and also so we could finally answer the age old question of what cartoon was the first with the zooming shield. Also, the cartoons would be windowboxed in black, much like in the Chuck Jones special.
I like Patrick's Idea of putting in lobby cards as an extra, I also wouldn't mind little books and things like that.
I really dislike the idea of a limited edition thing, why must only so many be made? They already don't keep LT videos in print long enough, many people want the GAOLT back in print.
I also wouldn't mind a complete Disney shorts collection, presented in the same way the above LT collection would be.
I'd like to see some Columbia cartoons, I've heard they really stink, but a small collection would be nice, so I could finally see some of Tashlin's Columbia work. I also think Art Davis did some directing there as well.

Why a Limited Edition? Why not? My thinking is...
A) - Yeah, it might cost an arm and a leg and a kidney or two, might hafta live on bread & water for a few months to afford it but this would be the ultimate tribute, a little fancier than individual volumes, perhaps a run of 5,000, with maybe a little something extra not found in 10 or 12 or whatever individual purchases.
B) - Folks would still be able to get all the cartoons in said individual volumes (over a period of time) but this would be the one shot for true collectors to get them all at once i.e. heaven.
I ain't rich at all but man i'd scrape up the money for such a release!
P.S.... all of the extras that people've been mentioning to go onto the DVD's, these are things that also need to be brought to WB's attention. I'm sure they're not complete maroons, these extras may already be on the drawing board but if not these are great ideas that would make their product a lot more attractive and they should know a slice of the public is interested in them. If the DVD's came out lacking them it would be a shame... but i wouldn't be surprised.
I still dislike it...
Actually, all together, a limited edition would most likely cost less than a bunch of small sets, so I've never understood the reasoning behind putting more extras into those.

Those are awesome DVDs! Too bad they don't have ANY information, other than the contents. I bet they'd be pretty cheap too. Also, you should note that not even a quarter of these cartoons are in the public domain. In fact, NONE of the DVDs at that site has any more information besides the contents!
