I'm here to spread the word that my good friend, animation historian Jerry Beck, has told me that this July, Universal Home Video will release their classic animation library to dvd for the very first time.Although details are not offically announced, but the set will contain 75 classic Walter Lantz cartoons, fully restored cartoons and uncut from the 1930s to the 1950s.Here's is a sample on what will be included...
1.All of the 1940s Woody Woodpecker cartoons.
2.The Tex Avery/Lantz cartoons
3.The Swing Symphonies
4.Very rare b&w cartoons featuring "Oswald The Lucky Rabbit" and "Pooch The Pup".
5.A few bonus materials.
No release date has not been made offical yet, but the set will be out in July.I'll provide more info, when it's made available. If this dvd collection sells well, then Universal make make more future Walter Lantz collections on dvd.

Finally, finally, FINALLY, an opportunity for me to study the Lantz Cartunes at length! Judging by what I've seen on Thad K.'s blog, the Lantz output of the 1940s was right up there with Warner and MGM in terms of smartly-executed humor and brilliant animation, yet they've been almost entirely forgotten in recent years. Permitting that the cartoons really are uncut and remastered (meaning as long as Universal doesn't pull a "Tom and Jerry"), I'll be all over this!

I actually had a couple of the Woody Woodpecker VHS tapes (And I still have one of them). I'd be interested in a DVD set of the Lantz material.

awesome: first Popeye, then Droopy, and now Woody Woodpecker. I bet today's youth has never heard of Woody:woody:

Woody used to be a merchandising blitz. I'm surprised he's not more on par with Tom and Jerry, Bugs Bunny, etc.

I never liked Woody as much as Looney Tunes or T&J, but he has his moments. I'll be interested to see exactly which shorts are included.

Of course you have to love the earlier version with the screwball eyes, buck teeth and mental patient disposition. :D

it's setting up to be a great short season with Woody and Popeye coming out. Now if only Classic Media will wrap up Rocky & Bullwinkle, WHV put out the final installment of H-B Tom & Jerrys, and MGM with a collection of non-Pink Panther DFE cartoons.
EXTRA
April 3, outcomes a single DVD with all the Ant & Aardvark cartoons from MGM. Maybe this means a 2 DVD set of Inspectors is being readied?
