View Full Version : Billy and Mandy to end post-production in the Spring.

I'm sure some of you may want to take a look at this information.
This is from Maxwell Atoms himself.
So what's the poop on Billy and Mandy?
We've been going strong now for about three years. And before that we had another three years of struggling and flopping and gasping for air as we wriggled our way out of the primordial ooze. And a year or so before that I did the pilot. All in all, we've survived numerous cancellations (or non-pickups, as CN likes to say) and finally proven ourselves. By the middle of this year, we'll have 78 half hours in the can, plus a few specials and a TV movie. Not a bad run.
78 half hours is as many half hours as Cartoon Network has made for anything. There's a theory that by the time kids get through five or six seasons of a show, they've outgrown the series and moved on to bigger and better things. That doesn't mean that Billy and Mandy is done and gone, but it does mean that we won't be making new episodes for the series in the near future. It's the end of an era. But it's also a good thing.
When we did our last record a few months ago, Tom Kenny (Spongebob, for all you fans of The Enemy ;)) said something to me that really made me appreciate the long run we've had on Billy and Mandy. "You guys are the only show I know of that exists solely because of fan support." And that's absolutely true, from our selection during the Big Pick to the fact that our two Funeral Parties didn't mark the end of our run.
So, yeah. For now this is The End. But all things, good and bad, end sooner or later. The good news is that there are still ten half hours left unseen, the crossover with the Kids Next Door, "Billy and Mandy's Big Boogey Adventure", and another hour long special called "Wrath of the Spider Queen". And maybe a few more treats along the way.
Not only that, but there seems to be some marketing going on this year. Will it ruin my indie cred if we get T-shirts or toys? Probably. But would I rather keep my indie cred or die penniless in a gutter? It's a tough call. And those DVD season sets you've been asking about? I can say with some certainty that we're looking at a big fat "maybe". And that's pretty good coming from Atlanta.
As for me, once we're done with post-production this Spring, I'll be starting on a brand new pilot (which I want to keep to myself for now) and a strange mutation special involving the Billy and Mandy universe (which I won't talk about yet, but the clues are out there!) and possibly another Billy and Mandy Holiday special (possibly). That's what Cartoon network tells me, and I believe 'em! This is gonna be a fun year (for me, anyway)!
Read it on his MySpace page. It has had a nice run, and there's still some of the show left to see. I'm sure we're going to hear more from Maxwell Atoms, once this series is done.

I'm gonna miss this show. I didn't catch many episodes of it, but from what I did see, I enjoyed it more than most of CN's current originals.
If it's for the best, then it's for the best. :(

Well, The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy had at least 6 seasons and that's a really good run for a cartoon. I mean some of the shows I've enjoyed only lasts up to 3 seasons...I like it the fact that Billy & Mandy lasted this long because of us fans. :D I can't wait to see what the rest of show has in store for us.

Wow, theres been rumors of it ending production since early 2005, and actually, I'm kind of shocked its actually happening. Still, 78 episodes a TV movie, a 1 hour special, and a -shrugs- crossover is really impressive for a cartoon. I'll be looking forward to Max's next cartoon. I just hope that they dont leave the characters hanging at the end, I want a conclusion (or a really kick ass episode). Hopefully the movie crossover and or special will provide that.

Well, I'm not surprised. It had a good, long run.
So I'm guessing now the writers/storyboarders will move to Carl Greenblatt's new show.

This news is awful. There's only two good CN originals making new episodes. I hope there can be another season sometime.

And also KND is going soon, so we will be in an era without any new cartoon catroon episdoes :(
This is dissapointing, but it makes sense that CN won't go past 78, but it seems B&M is getting really up there since adding FFB, and since it's had steady airing and premire times, unlike Ed, Edd n' Eddy

And some DVD sets to possibly come in the future.

The only guys to get a better deal than this were the producers of the new TMNT series, who got to make 117 episodes in four years before retooling. I can't really complain--everything's gotta go sometime. Let's hope CN can pick something soon that has some kind of an edge, and that Class of 3000 lasts two seasons.
Seems like the Eds have been around a lot longer than six seasons, though. Weren't they on the network in the late 90's?

1999 to be exact. That's a pretty respectable run.
Lets not forget the original post production ended in early 2003, and that was supposed to be the end. Danny was nice and ordered 3 specials in mid 2003 (and only worked on those for a while), and then in mid/late 2004 it was picked up for 2 more seasons. If they never took a break from the actual series I'm sure it would of been done by now. So far 61 episodes have aired, we got 15 episodes and the movie left.
Fosters doesn't seem to be dying anytime soon, and I'm curious to see if it will past the 78 death number.
13 or 26 for failed series (Like Mike Lu and Og, Robot Jones, Evil Con Carne)
52 for "did okay" series (Courage, Cow and Chicken)
78 for well done series's (Dexter's Laboraotory, Powerpuff Girls, Ed, Edd 'n Eddy, Billy and Mandy, Kids Next Door)
Just seems to be the natural order of Cartoon Network originals.

I've always had mixed feelings about Billy and Mandy. I watch it sometimes, but don't really....like it. But there are eps I think are outstanding: the "Keeper of the Reaper" ep (it's flat-out brilliant) and the ep where Grimm meets the intergalactic Grimm. As for how the show ends...again I turn to Bleedman: Mandy grows up and marries the Grim Reaper. Billy dies but enters the netherworld as a free spirit, and continues to haunt and pester the living. Just a thought...

To my mind, the perfect ending to The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy would be if, somehow, Grim finally got Billy and Mandy into a lethal "accident." There's a moment then where he reflects on time gone by, and is actually sad that they're gone . . . then he's interrupted by Billy's voice. Billy and Mandy may be dead, but their ghosts are still around. Grim suddenly takes back his previous sentiment and quickly opens a gateway to Heaven, trying to get Billy and Mandy away as soon as possible. But Mandy points out that Grim promised to be their "best friend forever," and they're going to spend forever in the afterlife now. The final image of the series is the three of them ascending up into Heaven, with Billy doing his usual "annoy Grim" schtick along the way, and Grim moans, "I hate you two so much!" Fin.

This was a good show I will miss it. But at least it had a good run unlike some shows I liked in the past. Plus its getting a TV movie and a crossover with my other favorite show Codename Kids Next Door. Yup the only good show left after this is Ed, Edd n Eddy for me and CN is taking too darn slow airing the new episodes
And why must SB live into season two when better shows like this are getting canncled?!! It doesn't make sense at all. I dislike that show very much so.
Who knows what adventures they'll have between now and the time the show becomes unprofitable?
-Troy McClureThey sure did pick a good time to pack it up. The only regret I have is that they didn't have Grim's Dad repeatedly call Grim a "Dumbass" and threatening to put his foot up his ass.

Billy and Mandy was one of the you pick the new show campaign before CN executives made the decisions. The people picked a really good choice. Billy and Mandy was quite popular and had less than successful spinoff, Evil Con Carne from Grim & Evil. The show at first was interesting as the Grim showed Billy and Mandy traveled through numerous portals of crazy and weird things in the world like nuclear engineered chicken and Nergal and his son Nergal junior. However, when Fred Fredburger appeared last year, the show itself jumped the shark in my opinion. Grim was treated as if he was in a corporation and he was. I bid Maxwell Atoms the best for the future.

I'm hoping before this series finally folds up, that it should end with:
Billy & Mandy finally giving Grim his freedom (Which is highly unlikely).
Mandy smiling one last time like she did in "Dumb Wish" (2001).
A spin-off in which Eris is tricked into being "friends forever" with two kids, a smart one (a little boy) and sweet one (a little girl).
Another spin-off in which Hoss Delgato and Irwin hunts ghosts/monsters/aliens (a rehash of the second-story episode, only this time Hoss excepts him as a sidekick).
That's it.

On Billy & Mandy: Well, atleast they've recieved one of the better runs at CN. Only EEnE was in production longer (and still is as IIRC, they are probably just barely cracking into animating season 6 at this point,) and that kind of doesn't count since they're were chunks of time their where they we're in production at all (though the same can be said of B&M.)

I'm kind of surprised they haven't because it's a very consistent ratings success (granted, so is Foster's and EEnE, and so were PPG and Dexter,) and with some merch-type stuff supposedly turning up this year, you'd think DVDs would be a perfect complement to all that.

Well, the movie DVD is coming out. Still waiting on news for season DVDs.
Well, I just hope the don't gage the need for the seasons on the movie - not that I think that movie will have trouble moving, it's just that it's a different issue to season boxsets. Season boxsets might sell where a one-shot movie might not. It's kind of like those random episode discs of cartoons - kids may go nuts for it, but collectors pass it up. The inverse is typically true of boxsets. Actually kids would love boxsets too, it's just that parents aren't typically into laying 20-30 bucks for kid vids, even if it is a better deal than 15 dollar random episode discs. However, I suppose we can hope that given a lot of these parents have probably collected whole TV series like 24 on DVD, maybe they'll be warmer to getting the same kind of material for their children.
Basically, I have an inkling how marketing minds might think, and I hope they are thinking outside the box a little.

For once we in Canada got an ep. before the US. Today at 5pm the BBA movie aired but sadly I was out untill 7ish and had not known it was on 'till it was too late (we don't get that many ads for the things you WANT to see, nor reairings for that matter.).
Good Riddance!
Pffffft!.......Perhaps you'd prefer "The Smurfs"?
Billy & Mandy is the best thing going on CN right now. Even the "weak" ep's are better than most other's "best". They had a pretty good run, and hopefully, Maxwell will create a new show just as good!
Three cheers for fan supported 'toons!:D:D:D

Maxwell Atoms' latest blog post regarding the cancellation:
Well, I've returned from New York. I had a good time, but ran into a few snags on the way home. My flight was delayed three hours due to a storm system in the middle of the country, so I did what any normal man would do in that situation, and I went to the airport bar and had a bunch of bloody marys and started drawing rude caricatures of people. Mostly with the hopes of impressing some brunette who I thought was winking at me, but she probably just had a nervous twitch that was manifesting because I was staring at her.
Well, I guess I must've made someone mad by drawing his unibrow, and an argument broke out. Soon enough, airport security got involved and they declared me "too sauced" to get on the plane. And I threw a fit, which I only would've done if they were right. All of this eventually got to the press, of course, and then back to Cartoon Network. Cartoon Network's decided to buy out my contract and "let me go" before "things get awkward". They'll probably delay the last episodes of Billy and Mandy for a long time.
I have to say, working for Cartoon Network's been one of the best things that've happened to me, so it's hard to say goodbye. CN has graciously released ownership of my new property back to me, so I'll be shopping it around to other studios in the near future. It's about cats that transform into jet planes, but they're real cats so it really hurts when they do it.
Thanks for all the Big Boogey love!

Actually, that post was an April Fools joke. He's deleted that entry and replaced it with a different one.
Hey y'all.
Thanks for putting up with my April Foolishness. I have to say I'm sorry if I fooled anyone, but I may as well also say "ha ha I fooled you".
But most of all, thanks for watching through all these seasons, and thanks for watching Big Boogey! I hope you all liked it.
As for me, I'm still working for Cartoon Network, and there's a bunch of fun Billy and Mandy stuff yet to come. In fact, Hoss Delgado's walls held a hint as to what one will be. You know, the more I think about it, the more cats transforming into jet fighters actually sounds like a good idea...
Happy April Fool's!
Hopefully this helps a bit. :)
