View Full Version : Purpose in Life?

Do you think that everyone has their own unique purpose? My mom says she thinks that everyone's purpose is to get married, have kids, and raise them right. I guess to her it doesn't matter what kind of career I have as I have a husband and kids. That makes me think about my aunt. She isn't married and doesn't have any kids so is she just a waste of a life? I sure hope not. I probably will never have kids because my mom has (and more than likely me too) this disese where hearing loss is accelerated after having kids so she wears hearing aids like an old lady since she was 40. I get depressed hoping that there is something I can do that will make me fulfill my purpose.

Your unique purpose is only your own and what you make of it, given the circumstances of what happens in life, how you deal it, and what you want out of it.

I don't think we're really born with a purpose. I think we find our own purpose and guide ourselves. I also think that life is exactly what you make it. Not having children or being married does not make one a waste of life.

I wrote a paper on this subject just recently. I came to the conclusion that I dislike questions that require an objective solution when none are available.
It's really up to you what the aim, goal, purpose or whatever you want to call it is in your life. Just make sure you don't start putting people down for coming up with a different answer. Those guys are annoying as heck...
As for myself, I've come to appreciate the meaninglessness of my current existence. Right now it really doesn't seem all that necessary to be making excuses for living my life. :p

Id say whatever you talent is or gift you have, use it to help other and to make an impact in this world using whatever it is...
And since im religious and all, my other purpose is to serve the lord with the talent he/she/it has given me... no im not turning this into a religious descussion, this is what i belive.
Yea, i also wanna have a fine foxy wife and make some kids and teach them what i know, weapons, art, and the ways of OTAKU LOL :D !!! We're here for some soul purpose or your own one, way or another, but if you make some difference or impact weither big or small, then thats what its all about...
To me, no one is meaningless...

I don't think I could care any even if there was such thing as a purpose. I'm too busy nmaking my own. And since im religious and all, my other purpose is to serve the lord with the talent he/she/it has given me... no im not turning this into a religious descussion, this is what i belive. I'm not religious but if your lord is real then 'he she it' is very pissed now! :D

On an evolutionary standpoint, we are born to procreate. That is our purpose; to keep our species from becoming extinct. But considering how many humans there are on Earth at this point, I don't think the human race would lose anything from some people not having any kids. :p
On a more personal standpoint, I think we all have to find our own purpose.
I also think that life is exactly what you make it.
My thoughts exactly. Life life to the fullest and all that jazz.

In my experience, people who try to make their own purposes tend to get lost. People who try to make themselves their only purpose will be highly disappointed. And those who say they have no purpose merely lack conviction.
My purpose? I have many purposes, few of which are truly visible. My current purpose is perhaps just to state that. Intermediate purpose is to make sure my firends and familly are well. The main purpose is to serve a much higher power.
We all have purposes, all of which is beyond our ability to choose which ones we have. Our only choice is wither or not to fullfill them or to ingore them, which isn't helpful.

No, existentialism and all that.
Sorry, I'm studying for my philosophy final.

My purpose in life is to bring the awesome like nobody has ever brought the awesome before. I'm doing a bang-up job.

Other than procreation(considering it's all up to me to continue the family gene pool suppodedly)
The purpose in someone's life tends to be mutliple ever changing paths, all of them judged by society as a whole as just and unjust, practical and impractical. The everbearing mental anguish of the right choice and other such things and the guilt and/or salvation that comes with it. Not to say that setting a goal for yourself is futile it's just the path to reach it may be far different than what you expected or something of greater personal intrest may arise while you're reaching that goal.
There is no purpose, we're just here so we might as well make the best of it.
If you want something other than that you have to make it up.

People make personal goals in life, and people have their own opinions of what their purpose of life is.
Only a higher power can tell you what your true purpose is, like what God said to Moses or something like that.

My purposes (What I choose):
1. Prolonging the death of our globe, through recycling, LOL.
2. Getting into a successful marriage, a few children to go along with that.
3. Contribute to the sales of comic books.
4. Brainwashing the neighborhood kids into becoming geeks like us, I'll make sure to point them to Toonzone when they come of age.

Everyone knows the purpose of life is to reproduce and keep on reproducing till the human species go extinct.

As it said before your purpose is your own but many of us can't really know what it is. For some us we have to go an enitre life time to findout and some us need to have spelled out for us. To sum it up I believe that everyones purpose is to find their own purpose, I'm still looking for mine.

I believe that our purpose in life is affected by seemingly insignificant events.
Since we do not know our purpose, we also cannot tell what these events are.
It is impossible for one to truly know one's purpose unless the Almighty tells you. Also, everyone's purpose holds significance in the grand scheme of things, and it is impossible to truly create one's own purpose.
After all, a purpose is not made in a day.
Some people have stated that every human's purpose is to procreate, if that is true then why doesn't everyone procreate?

Amen, brother. I've felt the same way over the last year or so. I could easily fade into the background and stay there until my time is up. :p

I don't really know, but its probably to cheer the world up. My goals in life are travel around the USA and Canada writing story's so I can make a name for myself and cheer up those who are down. The vehicle I'll travel will be an old Volkswagen or something like it, I'll stay at hotels at times and carry an old cell phone incase if my car breaks down. All I want out of life is to cheer up people and live a good life myself.

It should be to enjoy life and don't take life for granted. Live everyday the best you can and enjoy it. You are the master of your destiny and you should live it the way you want to. My goals include getting married and having kids but I also want to do things for myself including becoming a musician. Even if I fail at least I tried and most people never get a chance to live their dreams. Shoot high, even if you miss you will still reach the stars.

I've always believed that the purpose of life is very simple. To live.
I know there's no preachy or overly optimistic sentence behind that, but I really think that's all there is. The meaning of life...is to live life, and not merely exist.

Brilliant way of putting it, especialy considering it takes guts as it is to tolerate society, rather if you have Aspergers or not. Plus you'd be lucky to even be born rather than "aborted".

You would mind being aborted now, but not when you're an empty shell of a fetus. Anyway not having have lived can't feel bad.

Sometimes, the worse people to ask the diffiinition for humanity are human beings themselves. Specifically those without conviction or knowledge, unable to even define themselves.
