Anyone into indie music here? Cold War Kids? Silvesun Pickups? Lily Allen? Anything else?

I've never even heard of those bands, but Cold War Kids sound like it could either be really good or awful.

If WILCO is indie then I'd say I'm a fan. Sufjan's last album was pretty good.

*shrug* I just hit indie on my itunes playlist.

Indie is a fake genre anyway. Super melodic and qualm Sufjan Stevens is indie, chaotic and loud and scary Deerhoof too.

Slightly off topic.

I've been looking for ways to listen to obscure music. Medieval/Renaissance , Japanese Tyco and traditional. No one plays it to hear and is very hard to find hit and miss. Celtic was strong fro a while but that has faded.

As far as indie goes, I mosty gravitate to the older stuff like 80's SST acts (Husker Du, Meat Puppets, Dinosaur Jr., Minutemen). I also find myself digging stuff by Pavement, Sonic Youth, Modest Mouse (even though they're not quite "Indie" anymore). The Smiths however, just blow all and any of that away, no questions asked.

Now what seems to pass for "indie" these days (or at least the common perception of it) does nothing for me. A lot of it puts me to sleep. "Coffee-Rock" is my unflattering name for that vein of music.

It depends on the definition of indie. Is it because they're on a small-time record label or is it reflective of the music they make. There's no real style to an indie rock band aside from being "a style enjoyed by a smaller group than the mainstream music of the time"

As far as I'm concerned, indie = independent. Not connected to a large label or such. I just feel however, that there's a certain idea and sound connected with the word "indie" that's become so pervasive (the twee acoustic, chamber-alterna rock/pop) regardless of whether it's warranted or not. I know that there's plenty to the contrary of that description; I'm simply relaying the stereotype that is embraced in some circles.

I just feel however, that there's a certain idea and sound connected with the word "indie"I agree with the latter, even if there is this range of styles involved. But I'll always consider Modest Mouse and the Decemberists an indie band regardless of which label they're on.
