For all you video techies out there: How do you transfer material you've recorded on a VCR (from a blank tape) to a DVD disc (e.g. DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW)? Can it be done? What do you need to do it with?
I want to transfer some cartoon material I taped to a DVD disc, to make a music video. (Hope that's not hard, either.)

Well we have a DVD recorder/Vcr. Then you put the DVD in and a blank tape in and go to the menu, go to the record option, choose DVD:>: VCR, then hit dub on the front of the machine.

This is what I have too, and it's the easiest way. If you choose to instead buy an adapter that connects a VCR to your computer and burn the resulting video file as a playable DVD, it'll take a lot longer. The computer has to convert every frame, so it'll take hours.
However, from what it sounds like, all you're looking to do is get some cartoon clips onto editing software. For that, a VCR connecting device would be cheaper. You may not have to burn a DVD....

For my music videos I just take 1000's of screenshots from DVD's and put them back together so fast they only look like slightly delayed animation.

Well, when I wanted to transfer some old home movies on VHS to DVD recently, I bought an Archos AV500 (think a video iPod, but with a big sexy screen instead of that tiny little one), which can record digital from an RCA or S-Video line-in to an .avi file that can be easily transferred to a computer and then edited or burned to a DVD or whatever you want.
...Not the cheapest solution, I'll grant you that, but after I was done, hooray, I've got a badass portable video player! (-:
I understand they sell converters that will do all that analog-to-digital stuff without the hard drive and multimedia functions that made the Archos so expensive, so that's probably what you should be looking into.
Cnet has a neat little video you might check out: http://reviews.cnet.com/Transfer_your_VHS_tapes_to_DVD_Step_1_Getting_started/4660-10163_7-5736928.html

Thanks. I'm planning to buy one as soon as I can raise some cash.
I've tried buying DVD recorder/VCR combos on eBay (I won't spend more than $20 before shipping charges), and I always end up getting outbid. (I'm not giving up, though.)
And layaway is out of the question locally, since Wal-Mart has ended its Layaway program as of 11/15 (R.I.P Wal-Mart Layaway.:crying: )

I found a DVD recorder/vcr at Sears for as little as $125 (although I went with a more expensive model that cost nearly $250 after taxes and extended warranty). I'd say that is definately the way to go. It's really simple to use.
