Starting on Tashlin's disc right now. Dang, I still remember "The Case of the Stuttering Pig", even though I haven't seen it in years. The scene where the villain talks to the audience and said, "You better not pull anything, especially you in the third row!" stuck with me, for some reason.

It was nice to finally see "Bugs Bunny Superstar", too.

You should see "the Wild Chase!" You know how on CN the title card looks yellow and white? It's actually dark blue and white!!

MUST HAVE DVDS!!!!!! Er... how can you be angry, giddy, embarrased, and Bugs Bunny all at the same time? :p

In related news, I've reviewed the set for the news page. I gave it pretty much a universally glowing review. Look for it soon.

I wish I could rate this at this time, but I didn't see it at Walmart and didn't buy it at Target because they didn't deem it worthy of a sale price (Best Buy has it on sale for $44.99).

But considering its Looney Toons and I love Looney Toons - I'll probably give it a 4 or 4 1/2 once I obtain it.

With approximately 1100 LT/MM cartoons having been made and about 60 cartoons per box set, I'd say it'll take about 18 or 19 volumes to collect all the LT/MM shorts ever made. Thus, at a rate of one per year, guess it'll be around 2020 before they're all compiled---assuming something better than DVD/high-definition DVD doesn't come along before then (and presuming the latter volumes would likely be in high-definition DVD format....).

Do they have enough Bugs Bunny cartoons to have Bugs only disk on each set? I think that this past set had some of the best Bugs toons ever and I've already watched it several times.

I had heard that in a few volumes, they'll cut back on bonus features and put about 100 of the lesser tunes on the collection. But they can always change their mind. I just know that if they can avoid putting Buddy cartoons, I'm up for that. Also that 1,100 number contains the "new" LTMMs that didn't come out.

You can try this one:

http://www.tv.com/the-looney-tunes-show/show/18884/episode_guide.html?tag=subtabs;guide

Also, the "Print Episode Guide" has them all on one page.

Don't know how complete it is though.

I'm glad that Warner is presenting these cartoons uncut (like Southern Fried Rabbit), with their statement at the beginning of each disc that "to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed." But one has to wonder why WB didn't apply this same standard at all to their extensively PC-edited Tom and Jerry sets.

For a quick and easy to print list, see the Looney Tunes checklist on GAC: http://looney.goldenagecartoons.com/WBchecklist.html

Dave Mackey's site has more details including title card art and full credits for each short: http://www.davemackey.com/animation/wb/index.html

Probably because with the price they charge for the Looney Tunes sets they realized the fans and collectors would cry foul and it could cause bad press that they didn't want.

Looney Tunes Golden Collection is from the folks who run the Warners Vault - so they feel more beholding to their consumers.

Tom and Jerry were put out by Warner's Kiddie division so they have little qualms in splicing out stuff to make it more family friendly.

Glad to see at least one Arthur Davis cartoon, "Dough Ray Me-Ow" [1948], made the cut. Let's hope all of the others get on there.

The Goofy Gophers shorts he did ]the title short and "2 Gophers from Texas",] and that unusual one with the mice ["A Hick, A Slick, and a Chick"], should have commentary by Stan Freberg at elast, as he was in all three.

Why? So he can talk about being Pete Puma some more and basically quote along with the cartoons as they play?

This is the talkback thread for "Looney Tunes Golden Collection" Vol. 4: I Tawt I Taw a Great Batch of Cartoons! (http://news.toonzone.net/article.php?ID=13614).

One thing I'll always miss from Porky cartoons is Petunia. She always got the short end of the stick.

As good as the first two volumes were, I really liked how volumes 3 and 4 delved into the black and white cartoons more. There's some really classic material in B&W, especially in the Porky cartoons. Plus, come on, Private Snafu rules. It's not easy to make an informational film without it coming across as boring or preachy, but the Snafu shorts succeeded brilliantly.

I'll just repeat everything I already said in my DA journal....

Looney Tunes Golden Collection, Volume 4.

The Positive:

-No John K. this year. Thank God.

-"Mississippi Hare" and "Southern Fried Rabbit". UNCUT!

-Every pre-1964 Speedy Gonzales (minus "Mexican Cat Dance" and the ones already in previous volumes). ALSO UNCUT!

-"Porky the Fireman". ALSO UNCUT!

-A whole disk dedicated to the great unsung hero, Frank Tashlin.

-"Dough Re Me-ow". I think I saw that cartoon only one time as a kid, but it always stuck with me. Mainly 'cause it was funny! http://e.deviantart.com/emoticons/b/biggrin.gif

-"Bugs Bunny Superstar". Good to see this gem again. And Bob Clampett doesn't embellish here as much as he would later. http://e.deviantart.com/emoticons/r/razz.gif

-TWO Marc Anthony/PussyFoot cartoons: "Kiss Me Cat" and "Cat Feud".

The Negative:

-No Pepe Le Pew or Foghorn, ah say, Foghorn Leghorn.

-That annoying, whimpering, politically-correct disclaimer at the beginning of every disk. And you can't just menu thru it like you could last year with Whoopi Goldberg.

Final Score: 4 and a half out of 5. http://e.deviantart.com/emoticons/b/biggrin.gif

-"Bugs Bunny Superstar". Good to see this gem again. And Bob Clampett doesn't embellish here as much as he would later. http://e.deviantart.com/emoticons/r/razz.gif Like I said in the review, it's worth the inclusion just for "What's Cookin', Doc?". Hilarious cartoon. The moment when the award presenter says, "Your favorite and mine... our own... James Cagney!" was extremely well-done, as Bugs gets more and more flattered that he thinks he won, but gets shot down when the REAL winner is presented. Great visual acting by Clampett's unit all throughout. I really hope it gets a cleaned-up version on a future set.
-That annoying, whimpering, politically-correct disclaimer at the beginning of every disk. And you can't just menu thru it like you could last year with Whoopi Goldberg. True, but atleast the disclaimer doesn't last very long. Plus, I'd rather have that than for no disclaimer and edited cartoons, but that goes without saying.

It’s November, which means it’s time for the latest installment of the Looney Tunes: Gold Colllection, Warner’s annual four disc set compiling some of the best (and worst) the Looney Tunes brand has to offer. Unlike my reviews for Superman: The Ultimate Collector's Edition (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=179313), Justice League Unlimited: Season One (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=177002) and Batman Beyond: Season Two (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=177003), this will be a short review of the collection. Having never really reviewed a collection like this before, made up of various animated shorts, I’m going to focus more on the DVD itself than the cartoons found within.

It goes without saying that these Looney Tunes cartoons are some of the best ever presented, with great writing, directing and animation. Now, not every short on this set is a winner, but the vast majority of them are. Personally, I’m not a fan of Speedy Gonzolas and couldn’t really care for most of the cartoons on his disc. We have four discs, all given their respective themes. Disc one focuses on Bugs Bunny, the second disc on animator Frank Tashlin, the third on Speedy Gonzolas, and the fourth on focusing on cat-themed cartoons. There’s something here for all types of Looney Tunes fans who will no doubt get their money’s worth.

Like I said, not every cartoon on here is gold, but it’s another solid collection of sixty cartoons, inching ever closer to putting every single Looney Tunes short on DVD. While I wish they would speed up the releases of these sets, I appreciate the time and effort that goes in to presenting a truly solid collection year after year.

And how good do these cartoons look? Well, Warner Home Video has done a great job restoring these cartoons. Sure, the odd flicker and grain still remain on most of the shorts, but these are the best these cartoons have ever looked. Year after year, Warner is able to show how admirable of a job they’re doing on these releases. They look clean, sharp, and bright, a fine change from the VHS and "off the television" copies we’re all used to having. The audio is in mono so the sound is as good as can be in that sound setting. Packaging, of course, is as solid as the previous three releases.

As for the extras, I’m not even sure where to begin? You want commentaries, documentaries, featurettes, and other type of goodies? It’s all here, and in huge amounts, too. Each collection has a wide-array of commentaries, some a handful, others up to ten per disc. Participants vary on most of the discs, covering different aspects of the cartoons. I could go into detail about each and every one, but it’s so much to cover. The factoids dropped, interesting behind the scenes tidbits made are just monumental. You can even listen to select music and sound effect track son these discs, highlighting some of the most memorable tunes and effects used in some of these cartoons. It’s an excellent extra that I’d love to see employed on other animated collections.

I really wish I could go into detail, but given how pressed for time I am, all I can do is really compliment on how much of a complete package this is, and how excellent the collection is. This is the fourth fully packed and successful Golden Collection release from Warner Home Video. I do worry that maybe some day they’ll run out of fascinating extras and features, but given the depth and history involved with these cartoons, I doubt we’ll ever see that. It’s another Highly Recommended collection for Looney Tunes and animation fanatics, and that goes without saying. Looney Tunes: Golden Collection - Volume Four is a must own!
