View Full Version : Let's Backtrack
So, most of us agree that Cartoon Network has been going downhill for a considerable amount of time now. We all greatly miss the days of the Golden and Silver ages, and I want us all to try and think back. When did CN start going downhill? What caused it? What can we do to try and stop and/or reverse the process?

I agree with most of that but I could care less about Toonami. Also it wasn't the live action Fridays was bad, it was just no replacement for CCF. Playing live action movies was really going down hill
Yeah, live action movies was a huge mistake and really ruined the respect I had for CN. Live action Fridays was a crummy move, but things worked well for those first few months. Now it's to the point where Fridays is unbearable. Why were most of the CCs cancelled? That was definately a low point.

I do miss watching some of the classics on Cartoon Network, but I disagree that it's a reason for the network's 'downhill'. They've made some choices I've really disagreed with this year -- although I didn't necessarily care for the previous format of Fridays, it was better than what they have now. Usually, Fridays programming (not the segments, but the shows that air) has been one of CN's strengths in the past, and I was surprised to see them change so much. Being open to live-action is something I condemn, especially for Cartoon Network. Also, I know some things change, but when Cartoon Network decided to hang up most of the cityscape bumpers (I'll admit that I liked those even more so than the ones prior to June 2004, when the network saw a huge facelift) in favor of more trippy-looking bumpers (am I the only one that thinks many of them look kinda trippy?). Some of the "Yes" stuff was good, like the remixes and the Wilt parody of the Kollaboration event.
In our eyes, it may be going downhill, but not everyone will see it that way. In my own eyes, CN has made many choices this year that I've disliked a lot, though they have made a few good ones.

Replacing classics with horrible new shows.

Toonami's move to only Saturdays.
When CN changed their logo and started having more commercial breaks.
Getting rid of the timeslots of many classic Cartoon Cartoons.
Live Action Movies.

I actually like CN's newer logo

Perionally I think they started going downhill when they changed over to the "new" CN in 2004.
Yeah, the new CN deal was a big mistake. I hardly think that the network needed a change like that. Toonami being moved to Saturdays was an attempt to get better ratings by replacing it with Miguzi. The strategy was to get better ratings in the female demographic, and this move has had excellent results. The overkill of Totally Spies was one of the more obvious reasons that it was so successful.

To me, CN went downhill when Toonami was moved to Saturday nights, Cartoon Cartoon Fridays was changed to Cartoon Network Fridays, the whole revamp, Miguzi.

The death of CCF was the main killer to me

I had actually planned to make a thread like this so that I could send a link to it to Cartoon Network so they could at least see what went wrong with the network, and what they could do to make it right again. Can you please explain to me though, what did they change in 2004 onher thaan the bumpers, Saturdays only Toonami, cancellation of all the old Cartoon Cartoons and ruining Fridays? ANd you really need to express more what they can do to fix it if I'm going to send it to them.

The introduction of (the horrible) Miguzi, for one.

The logo change was what caused the disaster that is CN today.
But before that... the cancellation of all CC's and getting rid of Cartoon Cartoon Fridays.
Did the live action movie thing start before or after the logo change?

It went downhill since the cancelation of most CC's, the new logo and live action movies. They should make new Cartoon Cartoon Bumpers, make Fridays "Cartoon Cartoon exclusive" again, show reruns of old Cartoon Cartoons and make new episodes of some of them (Courage, Sheep, etc... deserved more episodes), they should also stop airing live action and make Toonami a separate Channel like in the UK.

Actually I think that Toonami should have its own channel

CN hasn't been doing so well as of late. It has a few good shows but not as many as it used to. Most of the shows are avrage. Which is ashamed because so many of us are use to seeing good shows come from CN. I just don't watch much any more.

Appearently, It went downhill in 2002, Like all the other networks including Disney Channel.
Appearently the quality of Toonami went down considerably, You know what I mean, and possibly classic cartoons were starting to move to boomerang, also this was the year CCF lost it's originality.
2003 ment redemption as the channel now started to take other series, also Toonami got a makeover, Goth Like makeover, Apparently the last we saw of Cartoon Cartoon was Whatever Happened to Robot Jones, Fridays got a makeover late 2003, Possibly Redeeming it beyond expectations.
2004-2005 was a glory year, Sure Looney Tunes were gone (due to high licensing fees) But Tom & Jerry was still on, 2004 was when Toonami switched to Saturdays, It was also the year that many Cartoon Cartoons would meet it's grave, Late 2004 means that the channel got a new look and new bumpers, This was considered awesome bumps for the time, 2005 was when we got Cartoon Summer, Most Awesome Thing Evar, Still looking for that Preview Special though, But was also the year that the channel would decline, 2005 introduced Live Action to the Network, 2005 also introduced Lazlo to the world.
2006 was the D-Year for everything, G4 was doomed, Viacom has been corrupted, What next, 2006 was when Cartoon Network changed looks from a city look to a red background of eyesores called Yes!, It involved a complete change in look and also eliminating the City Look bumps once and for all, Fall would be the turning point as City Look, Yes! and a new look would be fighting for control, But it was doomed in 2006.
So that's what happened for CN in the present, Now for Q&A.
Q: Why were the cartoon cartoons retired?
A: It was retired when Hanna Barbera and Cartoon Network Studios merged and posibility eliminated the Hanna Barbera name.
Q: Why did they move Toonami to saturday?
A: It was to reach a new teen demographic.
Q: Why did CCF die?
A: See above.
