View Full Version : Questions about Original Superfriends Hour-Long episodes

When I was a kid, I would watch the "Superfriends" on ABC Saturday mornings. The series first aired in 1973. The episodes I have questions about were one hour long, featuring Wendy, Marvin, and, of course, Wonderdog, with such villains as "The Power Pirate" and "King Plasto".

1. Were these one-hour episodes only made for the show's first season?

2. How many of these one-hour episodes were made?

3. Are these one-hour episodes available on VHS or DVD? If not, will they be anytime soon?

4. Did any of the other "Superfriends" series that came later, ("Challenge of the Superfriends", etc.) have one-hour episodes? I think some did and some did not.

Thanks in advance

1. Were these one-hour episodes only made for the show's first season?

- As far as one hour long plots go, yes. That was only in the first season. However, several seasons went with the one hour format, even though they only contained 7 minute to 22 minute episodes.

2. How many of these one-hour episodes were made?

- 16 episodes that repeated for a few years until the next series debuted.

3. Are these one-hour episodes available on VHS or DVD? If not, will they be anytime soon?

- None so far. The next Superfriends series out will be Superpowers Team: Galactic Guardians and the Legendary Superpowers Show (The final 2 seasons) sometime in 2007, possibly both in the same set. I'm guessing the first season will actually be among the last released after all the 30 minute episodes make it to DVD. Considering there's only 3 seasons left (The original season, The All New Superfriends Hour, and the World's Greatest Superfriends), we should be getting all of them released at some point.

4. Did any of the other "Superfriends" series that came later, ("Challenge of the Superfriends", etc.) have one-hour episodes? I think some did and some did not.

- 'Challenge of the Superfriends' (with the 11 member roster) and the regular 'Superfriends' (With just the core 5 and the Wonder Twins) shared an hour long time slot, as well the 'All New Superfriends Hour', which was comprised of 7 minute shorts, saftey tips & magic tricks. I'm not sure if 'The World's Greatest Superfriends' ever had a full hour to itself, though, maybe someone could clarify that.

Adding to what was already said, after the first season, Superfriends ran for an hour from 1977-1981. The All-New Super Friends Hour consisted of three shorts and one 22 minute adventure. Challenge of the Superfriends also ran for an hour with one Challenge episode and one episode with the main seven. Both of those segments have DVD boxsets. Challenge even ran for 90 minutes briefly with the shorts from the previous season rounding out the show. World's Greatest featured eight new 22 minute episodes with reruns rounding out the hour. The Superfriends Hour, the last season with new episodes broadcast on ABC before the two Super Powers seasons (although one additional season popped up on syndication and another in Europe), consisted of three seven minute shorts with reruns rounding out the rest of the hour.

After 1977, the first season wasn't seen on ABC.

I hope that clears up some of your questions.

I'm a huge DC Comics fan, especially silver age, but I can hardly bear to sit through those first season episodes. The plots move at a snail's pace! It's like riding on the lazy river. Seriously, the most exciting part of the series was Plastic Man's brief cameo in one episode, retrieving a mouse from out of Goodfellow's GEEC computer ( What, was the Atom busy?). Still, completist that I am, I know I'll buy this set. Darn you, OCD!

Thanks for all of the great information.

You people really know your stuff!

I, too, am a DC Comics fan, along with Marvel as well. I remember seeing that "Plastic Man cameo" appearance when the show was originally on the air. It was fun to see a new, guest hero stop by.

I remember when Green Arrow stopped by.

Wasn't there another hero that guest starred in that first season? It seems like there was.

I remember watching the "Superman/Batman/Aquaman" show (Filmation, late 1960s) in reruns when I was kid. I always enjoyed the separate cartoon episodes that featured the solo adventures of The Atom, Green Lantern, Hawkman, The Flash, and the Teen Titans...along with the Justice League episodes. There were 3 solo episodes for each hero and the JLA, however I remember only seeing 1 of the 3 with the JLA.

I wonder if all 3 JLA episodes were put into reruns?

You are right!!:D

Now that you said that, it made me remember the episode where The Flash appeared.

I don't remember the villain, but I remember the plot had something to do with the Earth being moved out of orbit, approaching the Sun. The Flash wrapped some copper wire around his body, the proceeded to circle the Earth, wrapping the wire around it and creating some type of magnetic field to counteract the Earth's movement toward the Sun.

I haven't seen that episode in many years, but I think that was part of the plot; but I am now sure that the third hero was indeed The Flash.

Thanks!

The Superfriends Hour, the last season with new episodes broadcast on ABC before the two Super Powers seasons (although one additional season popped up on syndication and another in Europe), consisted of three seven minute shorts with reruns rounding out the rest of the hour.

Mister Intensity Are you suggesting TWO "lost seasons"? The 1983 episodes listed above (incorrectly as "1982-1983") are the ones that supposeldy appeared only in syndication. So what is this "other" season that appeared in Europe? Not even Will's or MRupprecht (SprFriends)'s pages say anything about that.

If I remeber correctly

The first season guess stars where

Plasticman
Green Arrow
Flash (all which was already mentioned)
Atom (think also made an appearance)

Hockey Mask
09-15-2006, 07:01 PM
Professor Goodfellow's G.E.E.C. featured Plastic Man.
Too Hot to Handle featured Flash.
Gulliver's Gigantic Goof featureed Green Arrow.

Flash would come back in later SuperFriends the other two would not. Atom would not make an appearance until the next season.

If you are a huge DC Comics fan, do you have the "Superfriends" comic DC did in the 1970s in your collection? If not, I highly recommend you start looking through back bins at your comics store. They were very superior to the TV episodes (and I think the JLA comic of that era, quite frankly).

I'm forced to agree that the "Super Friends" is far from a classic (though it had a fantastic opening theme), though frankly I preferred in some ways the hour-long episodes to the monotonous gladitorial contests of the 1960s action HB ("Jonny Quest" and "Fantastic Four" excepted, which not-so-coincidently had full half hours to work with). The "Super Friends" at least had some room to develop characters and plot, even if they didn't necessarily use it to best advantage (I must give SF this much, they were the first to expose me to Superman's full origin, and I think it stands today as one of the best retellings).

By the way, if you'd like to see a superhero show with a hour-long format of everyday-kids-mixed-with-events-out-of-this-world similar to "Super Friends", only done very right, I suggest you pick up DVDs of the series "Figure 17".

The 1981 season only appeared in syndication, while the "lost season of 1983" only aired in Europe until the mid-90's.

Mister Intensity

Why did the "lost 1983 season" only air in syndication in Europe until the mid-1990s?

Did it ever air in the U.S. in syndication, or on the ABC network?

Also, why was the 1982-1983 show "The Superfriends" produced, but never aired on ABC? Did it ever air anywhere?

As far as I can tell, ABC was still running "Superfriends"-titled shows on Saturday mornings.

The '83 season did not air until the '90s in the US. It fell under the Superman/Batman Adventures which I believe may have aired on USA network but I could be wrong. Why it was never aired...the network gave up on it and didn't even run reruns of Superfriends in '83 on Saturdays. More puzzling is why they would go back to The Legendary Super Powers Team in 1984. You would think if they refused to air already produced episodes that they would not greenlight yet more SuperFriends episodes a year later.

I think The Legendary Superpowers Show/Superpowers Team's only reason for existance at that time was to push the accompanying toyline/comic book series.

The final seasons had a DRASTICALLY different feel to them (And in Galactic Guardian's case, a different look). Maybe it was the addition of Darkseid (a villain who could actually pose a threat) and the new Brainiac design.

Forgot about the toy line. Good point.

Here's some interesting things that I remember (I'm taking this from memory so the facts may not be 100%).

ABC aired reruns of Superfriends from 1981-1983. Most of the episodes were from the The All-New Super Friends Hour, Superfriends (1978), and World's Greatest. I believe only Challenge episode, "Night of the Living Swamp" was cycled (with a World's Greatest-styled title card, no less) within those two years of reruns.

Although, the ABC opening credits was updated with El Dorado in 1981, the new 1981 episodes only appeared within the weekday Superfriends rerun package.

Two of the "lost episodes" appeared during the Legendary Super Powers season. While they may have aired in Europe in 1983, I believe they were made for the 1982 season.

I remeber reading that what became The Legendary Super Powers Show was originally going to appear during the 1983 season as "Super Friends: Champions of Justice." I remember reading this in a magazine mentioning that a new season was being considered with Darkseid as the main villain and Firestorm as a new member. It wasn't picked up but I wouldn't surprised if it was retoolled after the Super Powers toyline was developed. It wouldn't surprise me if The Bride of Darkseid was made a significant period of time before the rest of the season. One thing I did notice that the character card that appeared at the end of the closing credits featured the Super Friends logo in that first episode but had the featured characters of the show in subsequent episodes.

Like I said, my facts may be faulty (particularly the last paragraph) because I'm reciting this from memories of over 20 years ago.

They did move to syndication rather quickly, though.

Also, there was no 1982 season of new episodes, aired or not aired. After the 1981 episodes, it jumps to the 1983, which were the unreleased ones. (unless you're saying that only those two episodes were made that year).

The SuperFriends Hour had 24 seven minute shorts that aired during the 1980-81 season. These new episodes were mixed with reruns and made up a 60 minute show.

SuperFriends had 18 new seven minute shorts that aired in the 1981-82 season. These introduced El Dorado and were also mixed with reruns and made up a 30 minute show.

The Best of the SuperFriends was a 30 minute show that was nothing but reruns of old SuperFriends in 1982-83. At the same time is when 24 new seven minute episodes were produced but not aired in America until the mid-90s under the banner The Superman/Batman Adventures. Mxyzpltk's Revenge, Roller Coaster and Once Upon a Poltergeist were the only three episodes of the 24 that were aired the next year under the SuperFriends: The Legendary Super Powers Show. These 24 "lost" episodes included The Revenge of Doom. The return of the Legion of Doom! Unfortunately, it was only seven minutes long and most didn't have speaking parts.

That pretty much sums it up.

Perhaps the confusion is coming from the http://members.aol.com/SprFriends/chronology.htm#shorts80-81 page where at the top the intra document link says "THE SUPERFRIENDS LOST EPISODES (http://members.aol.com/SprFriends/chronology.htm#lost83-84) 1982-1983". However, at the actual section it says "(1983 - 1984)", and on Will's page it says that as well. Both sites point out that Superfriends did not air at all that season, and that would make sense as to why the new episodes did not air.

If I remeber correctly

The first season guess stars where

Plasticman
Green Arrow
Flash (all which was already mentioned)
Atom (think also made an appearance)

Atom did not make an appearance in the very first season of the Superfriends. Just wanted you to know.
