When cartoons reused animation from past cartoons, how did they "reuse" the animation?

I assume they just used the exact same character cels (from previous cartoons) on different backgrounds. If they were REALLY lazy, they would just reuse full bits of footage from previous cartoons.

In cases where the original animation drawings were still intact, I assume they just traced over them again. In other cases, I suppose it's entirely possible that they just rotoscoped the original footage (which would probably explain how Warner Bros. was able to recycle animation for 90% of a cartoon like "Dough for the Do-Do" or "Tick Tock Tuckered").

Can anyone give specifics? What kind of reused animation? Like a retrospective?

 Wow, I've seen fight moves and other little clips reused as fillers, but never had a clue they did it to that extent. I guess they're using one cell as a template to paint the other when the characters look different but move the same.

Hanna-Barbara was famous for recycling animation. Disney has also done it in several movies. I'm sure most studios have done it occasionally and to tell you the truth it saves a lot of time. I really have nothing against it if you're on a tight budget or really pressed for time.

It can also be a nice stylized method in its own right. Obviously, it's the most practical way to do transformations ranging from He-Man to Digimon that take place again and again, yet require little to no variation. And the 02 He-Man show made good use of stock (i.e. Filmation's term for this) by creating signature shots for certain characters. It's the visual equivalent of epithets.
It's just not something to use as a crutch.
