On several H-B shows from the late 70s-early 80s, right before the closing logo pops up, on the very last credits screen there is a small box at the bottom of the screen featuring the characters from the show the credits are for. When did this practice start, and when did it end? Im assuming it started with the debut of the "swirling star" h-b logo (circa 1979), but im not sure.

Actually this was a long time practice for H-B. Each box was like a model sheet of the particular grouping of H-B characters that was being featured. The first one I remember seeing (in print) was the Flintstones, back about 1965. There is even one carved (probably molded) into a rock wall at the Flintstones theme park near Custer South Dakota. The poses of Fred/Barney/Wilma/and Betty were, infact, taken from their standard model sheets. Anyway, after noticing the Flintstone block, I started noting that H-B was doing this same thing with the rest of their characters. These character blocks often appeared in printed material such as comics, coloring books, and such. They were used as "trademark" emeblems, often stating so in the print below them.
The practice of putting these character boxes in the end credits, as I recall, started sometime in the early 70's.
I'd be willing to bet someone will be able to post examples in a reply.

Late 60's, I think it was. It was also used in the indicia for H-B books published by Gold Key and I think Charlton, too.

Character boxes in end credits? The first widespread instances of these occurred in the 1967 shows' end credits; for that season, the boxes would first appear at the end credits' START; vanish, and then reappear at their VERY END.

To my knowledge, the character boxes have been utilized on-air as early as 1965-66, as referenced here on the bottom left...

The first time they were shown at the end of the show was on Space Ghost in 1966. The last known appearance of these bugs happened sometime around 1985, IIRC.

São Paulo - SP, Brazil, June 2, 2007 (The Beatles' album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band [EMI, 1967] turned 40 years old this week).
Josie,
The box which contains the cast of characters from Hong Kong Phooey (Hanna-Barbera, 1974) - Sgt. Flint, Penry/Hong Kong Phooey, Spot and Rosemary -, is located in the inferior part of the screenshot (more to the left), between the RCA logo and the copyright. I remember clearly of this detail.
Well, this was what I've had to report here.
Tchau!
Cheers from this faithful friend who always writes 4 U,
