My mom is constantly complaining to me that I don't look like I should (like, I don't wash my hair often enough, I'm pasty, etc). My response is, there is more to a person and more to life than looks. So what if I own a few Stewie shirts and no pink shirts. Normal.

What do yo uthink?

I'd have to see, and smell, you to make a judgement on your hygiene. You definitely should wash your hair often and get some sun, though. Like it or not, fair or not, the way it should be or not, people judge you based on your appearance. Having a personal sense of style is fine, but within those parameters you should be well groomed and unsmelly. If you're not, the message you are sending the world is "I am actively unsocial."

True, there's more to a person than just looks, but I think the way you look says a lot about who you are and gives people a taste of your personality. If you dress in crappy clothes and walk around with a head of hair you haven't washed in a week or whatever, most people will likely perceive you as a lazy bum without much going for him.

Personally, while I'm not one to dress real fancy unless it's for a special occasion, I try to maintain a decent-looking appearance that says I care about myself. It's also good for those moments where a first impression is important.

EDIT: ShawnHopkins beat me to the punch. That's basically what I was trying to say as well.

I'm 17...

I can't help wiht the pasty thing. I'm allergic to the sun.

I wash my hair about every 2-3 days, so it's never usually that bad.

My mom just looks past the brains/imagination I have and then goes to the insultin'/etc. Then and only then, immediately after, does she follow with a slight compliment.

I mean do you not take a bath/shower for 2-3 days or do you just not wash your hair? That probably doesn't make any sense but you weren't really to clear.

my hair goes down to my chin.

I don't do a lot of physical activity, so I don't sweat very much. Instead of sweating, I break out in hives.

One of the biggest turnoffs I can remember from college was realizing a girl in one of my classes wasn't wearing a knit cap almost every day because it was cute. She was wearing it to hide her skanky rats nest of unwashed hair. That really changed my opinion of her. Clean hair is sexy, dirty hair is icky.

Couldn't have said it better.

You really have to wash that hair daily. I'm a guy, and I have fairly short hair, and I still wash it everyday in the shower. For a girl, I don't like when the hair looks like a trampled bird's nest, and smells. It makes me wonder what other things she doesn't do that are basic, like brushing teeth, wearing clean clothes, etc.

There was this girl last year at my college (she was an exchange student so she was only for a year) who I swear NEVER SHOWERED. And if she did, she did it once every two weeks or something. You walked past her and you could actually smell something awful.

I remember when we went into our annual field trip, a friend of mine who had to share room with her handled her a soap and a towel and said to her: "Go to the bathrooms and USE this, but there's no way you're going into our cabin until you take a shower."

I pity whoever sat next to her in the bus ride to the camp site.

As for myself, I shower daily but wash my hair 3 times a week (normally Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays), this is mainly because of Doctor's advice. I have very sensitive hair and shampooing it daily causes it to fall down.

I agree with the hygiene thing, but I disagree about the getting more sun thing. The sun causes cancer. Sure, those tans may look nice now, but all those tan people are going to have dry, leathery skin in a few years. It's better to keep your skin pasty. Sure, a little sun is good so you can absorb Vitamin D, but getting tan is unhealthy.

Also helps to wear sunglasses when you're outside in the day. A doctor once told me it greatly reduces the chances of developing cataracts and wished more people would wear them.

And yes, you can wash your hair every day with longer hair. Just have a really good conditioner like Pantene Pro-V. No cheap stuff.

That really depends on the person (how often you wash your hair, I mean). My skin is very dry to the point where I cannot use most soaps because it gets flaky and gross; I basically live off of Bath & Body Works' shower gels because it's one of the few products that I can use daily without that happening. Same with my scalp. If I can't get any shampoos designed specifically for the same thing or if I run out, I just use regular shampoo every other night, skipping shampooing (but not showers) on the interval nights. Thankfully that doesn't happen too often anymore, but I used to have to remind my mother to buy more before I ran out whereas now I can get some on my own.

I definitely agree that one should brush his or her teeth once a day at least- preferably more-, and clothing should be changed and washed frequently. I can't really comment on the skin thing, since I myself am pasty and have sickly raccoon eyes.

Rarely showered, and the room smelled. 20 days with that guy was enough- thankfully I was able to move out and find a new roommate. There's no excuse for apathy on simple hygeine. A shower takes 5 minutes if you rush.

Sorry, but I think it's for your own good. Lacking the hygeine is a huge turnoff, in my book. If I were a manager, president, or anyone that can higher employees, I'd turn you down in an instant. I have a problem with people who are capable of staying clean. If you improve on your hygeine, you will have a better chance of making it in the real world. Looking like a bum will lead to people not wanting to be around you, and your chances of getting a job go down quickly.

Getting a tan, is bad?

No it isn't, not if done right, meaning you use sun tan lotion, and get it. It's gross when someone has pasty skin and one of the most unattractive things, and honestly, in society looks do matter, so Id say a tan is way better than being pasty.

Well, looks is one thing, hygiene is another. While you would have my slightly reserved support if you were clean but just sloppy, I can't really support uncleanliness. It's not good for your health and it's not good for the people around you.

I used to argue with my mother all the time about how I dress and how I comb my hair (basically, not much) but I couldn't disagree whenever she thought I needed to clean my clothes or wash my hair.

But, eventually I had to start being clean AND looking better too. So, I comb my hair a bit more carefully and press-iron my clothes before I go out. Yes, I am slightly disappointed that I have started to conform, but I want to have a SOME social life, make lots of money, and get married someday. Improving your looks is always the first step in this superficial world.

Well, just because she doesn't comb her hair doesn't mean it isn't clean. The litmus test is how GREASY it is, not how well groomed.

But, you said it smells, which is another indicator:p

I don't mind when girl's hair is not brushed, for say, one day or something. I mean, if you go on vacation and your camping out in the wilderness, I wouldn't expect perfect hair :P. It's just, I don't like when the hair is literally all over the place, and all knotted up and gross. That's a major turn off for me. I mean, if you don't have time, put it in a ponytail or something, but don't leave it like a mess. ;)

That's what I do when I have dirty hair... but man, it sure looks and feels disgusting when it hasn't been washed in a couple of days. Ick. I don't like taking my ponytail out to see my hair retaining its shape because of the grease. It's such a disgusting feeling.

Care about yourself. That starts with keeping yourself clean and a neat appearance. I'm not saying wear a suit to school or anything, but at least shower daily (or 5-6 days a week at least), put a little thought into your outfits, and look like you care. If you look like you care about your appearance, you'll look like you can care about others as well. You'll look like you can take care of yourself, which is important. No one has to look amazing all the time, but you can at least put a little effort. Take pride in what you see in the mirror.

Actually, I find pale girls much more attractive than tan girls. Believe it or not, often times in movies actresses wear makeup to make themselves look paler, so apparently, I'm not the only one. Besides, didn't everyone have the fairy tale of Snow White told to them as a kid? Wasn't that story about a woman whose skin was as white as snow? I grew up to idealize pale skin.

By the way, I'm going to laugh my ass off in 10 years when you're diagnosed with cancer.

Also, speaking of tans, I've noticed that my outer arms always seem to get more tan than my inner arms. This is obviously because my outer arms are facing the sun, and my inner arms aren't. This actually really pisses me off. I want to be pale all over, but unfortunately, it's too hot out to wear long sleeved shirts. Oh well, winter will be here soon, and then I can work on getting my arms pale again.

Personally, I like to bathe or shower twice a day. Drives my family mad. Is it obsessive to want to scrub off that icky-crawly skin feeling before and after you sleep? I certainly don't think so.

Now shaving... I hate shaving. :p

With other people, slightly messy hair doesn't bother me. Messy hair happens... often without your own consent. It even looks good on some people. Smelly hair, however, is not excusable. Eww.

I agree with the hygiene thing, but I disagree about the getting more sun thing. The sun causes cancer.Makes you wonder what people did when they had to work in the field all day... and why they all didn't die of cancer at an early age. Too much direct sun is still inadvisable, but skin tans for a reason.

There's this silly thing called suntan lotion.Wasn't there some sort of empirical evidence linking sunscreen to cancer? Something about substances in the lotion generating excessive free radicals in the presence of UV rays? Or was that debunked? I could have sworn I've seen that info recently repeated in a number of reputable sources...

...which reminds me of the counter-top material that kills bacteria by the same basic principle. Hmm.

Haha!! Oh, man, even with an electric razor it takes forever for me to shave. I hate it! My dad shaves every other night, and he's bewildered that I'll go a week between shaves. It's just such a hassle that I couldn't bear to do it every other day. Sometimes I'll go more than a week, but I try to stay on a once-a-week-shaving schedule. If only there was a laser razor that could give a perfect clean shave with one pass over the face.

Neither is being super tan... it's a double-edged sword. We all need vitamins from the sun to be healthy, so some sun exposure is good. I haven't noticed the latter, however. I probably have the palest skin of all the girls on my softball team (I have blue eyes, fair skin, burn easily, freckle, all that good stuff) and while I'm not pasty or anything, I'm pretty light in my tan, but I was probably the best player on my team. They'd probably disown me if I stopped showering and wearing clean clothes everyday. (Not that I'd ever want to stop - I have a big hang-up about going to bed dirty).

Seriously, though, this leads me to the question - why brush at night before bed, and then again a few hours later in the morning when you haven't eaten or drank anything? It's senseless to me.

Hard to believe..but the evidence is in...proof if you look for it..brushing your teeth, and through flossing twice a day, helps to prevent heart disease.
For some unkown reason, gum disease which is the result of not flossing and burshing has some unknown direct link to heart disease..Yea, I didn't believe it either...

There is very good reason to brush in the morning. Chewing gum/mouthwash doesn't get rid of the bacteria and what not that breeds and builds up overnight, it just covers it up. Brushing does a lot more to get rid of it and will keep your breath fresh longer. Man, I brush like 4 times a day.

I could see three, but after four I think my teeth would lose their enamel...:D

For some unkown reason, gum disease which is the result of not flossing and burshing has some unknown direct link to heart disease..Yea, I didn't believe it either...

But recent studies have shown this link and these studies are real, and verifiable...Ehh, it's been strongly suspected for years, and the reasons aren't quite so unknown. It's only recently that it's been absolutely proven... that the deposits clogging up the heart are caused by oral bacteria. On the other hand, it hasn't yet been proven that adopting good dental hygiene will causally improve your chances. For all anyone knows, once the bacteria are alive and well in your blood, you're screwed. It's probably still safer on the clean teeth side, though.

mouthwash doesn't get rid of the bacteria and what not that breeds and builds up overnight, it just covers it up.While gum doesn't rid your mouth of the bacteria, decent mouthwash does. The stimulation of a toothbrush really doesn't do all that much more, especially since most people don't brush throughly. Plus, the tongue is where it's at. How many of you folks have a tongue cleaner? *raises hand*

Brushing does a lot more to get rid of it and will keep your breath fresh longer. That's, for the most part, untrue. Brushing does work off plaque a lot better, of course, but sucks at eliminating bacteria. And, maybe this is just me, but most minty toothpastes taste like floor.

Brushing itself isn't a good enough solution for taking care of your teeth. You've got to take other actions. Flossing seems silly, but I've learned how important it really is. Mouthrinses, the cavity-preventing-fluoride-containing ones especially, protect a lot too. Toothpaste is just the shampoo of your teeth. Mouthwash is the conditioner, and floss the comb, really. Without it, you've just got clean scraggly hair... or teeth. Whoops, I took that metaphor a little too far.

And for the record, I usually brush about three times a day, when I don't drink soda. My gums sometimes get upset with me, but I detest having a mouth that feels or tastes unclean. If I do drink a can of soda, or something else sugary, I'll brush asap after drinking it. I can feel it coating my teeth. *shudders*

However, if you chew gum that contains Xylitol, recent studies show that it can be good for your teeth. Either way, it's no substitution of brushing and flossing.

The sun is not all cancer and burns. It does give you vitamin D, which the body needs and is difficult to acquire artifically. If you fiendishly protect yourself from every hazard you can think of, your body will never learn how to cope with different conditions.

However, I have heard that if you avoided the sun all the time as a kid, and then suddenly went out in the sun a lot as an adult, you're more likely to harm the skin because your skin never built up a reactive mechanism in your youth. When you're an adult, your skin is more sensitive to the environment and without the past experience, it can no longer protect itself. I personally feel sorry for the pasties whose skin can't tan and can only burn when exposed to sunlight.

As for mouthwash, I'm not against it but I don't use it daily. I prefer brushing twice. I just think there's something potentially negative about that burning sensation you get from the really strong mouthwashes.

I brush twice, and use Scope afterwards. It doesn't really burn that bad, actually. I swosh it around, gargle, and spit it out, and instantly I have good breath. :)

I use a mechanical toothbrush (Oral B Triumph), but I don't use the mouth was daily.

Hmmm...I actually heard on the news that after drinking sugary drinks it's best to wait an hour before brushing. Something about the sugar reacting with the toothpaste or something if you brush right away.

It's better just to avoid sugary drinks except for special occasions. I used to drink pop almost exclusively, and my teeth hurt a lot.

Agreed. I used to drink soda everyday, until I was quote on quote diagnosed with Acid Reflex Disease, which caused horrible heartburn every time I would drink a carbonated beverage. My ARD has been long gone, but I've never taken up drinking soda again, except at birthday parties, weddings, etc.

Heh, I've gotten in the bad habit of drinking diet soda with most of my meals since I've gotten to school.

Speaking of brushing teeth, though, I've been doing that much more religiously since I got to school than I ever did at home. Weird.

My mom is constantly complaining to me that I don't look like I should (like, I don't wash my hair often enough, I'm pasty, etc). My response is, there is more to a person and more to life than looks. So what if I own a few Stewie shirts and no pink shirts. Normal.

What do yo uthink?

haha... sorry but i like this situation.... i kinda have the same thing going on but u know what? i might not be on the top of all the trends but i make what i have look cute. ex: Campus give out free shirts and what not and i gots them just to save on money. i put one of these slightly oversized shirts on with a cute skirt, put my hair up into a respectable pony tail or just clip back my bangs leaving my hair down, put a drop of eye liner on and voila! i look adorably attractive :D. i didnt have to spend hundreds of dollars on the latest trends and what not. btw i also have a pale complexion but it works for me since i have dark eyes and dark hair.

So what i'm saying is that its normal if you care about your looks, but its hard to show brains or to be taken seriously if you don't look um presentable, i guess. (not insulting you in any way) a little effort never hurt anyone. start small and always keep it simple, that's my motto ;)

btw thanks for not owning any pink shirts....
