Today, another two Hanna-Barbera classics come to DVD. Let's make sure they sell well so we can get more classic cartoon releases.

Hong Kong Phooey, a somewhat inept super-hero and a master of kung fu and marital arts is always on alert for crime. He gets tip-offs from the police station where he works as Penrod "Penry" Pooch, the mild mannered janitor. Whenever Penry overhears a call for help he quickly dives into a filing cabinet and changes into his karate outfit and then hops into his Phooeymobile. Despite his fallings, and thanks to Spot, his cat, Hong Kong Phooey always manages to save the day. He is a beloved superhero to all who know him. These 31 classic cartoons from Hong Kong Phooey are now available for the first time ever on DVD!
Special Features Include:
Available Subtitles: Spanish, French
Available Audio Tracks: English (Dolby Digital 1.0)
31 episodes on two discs, one single-sided and one double-sided
Commentary on three episodes by creative producer Iwao Takamoto, layout unit manager Willie Ito, and Warner animation producer-historian Scott Jeralds
The Phoo-Nomenon: retrospective documentary
Hong Kong Phooey--The Batty Bank Gang: the complete storyboardFeel free to discuss both the DVD and the show. Expect my review by the end of the week.

That number is misleading. There's only 16 episodes. 15 of the episodes had two capers. The final episode seemed like H-B was trying to introduce a cowboy crime solving series that didn't get a deal. So don't think you're getting 31 half hour episodes.

So what. you don't have to make a big deal out of it.

So what. you don't have to make a big deal out of it.I can already tell you're going to have some tough times ahead. JCorey3rd was merely informing you of the details... if you knew, you'd have said so. Then again, it is not my place to assume what others think.
Speaking of Hong Kong, I looked for the set at my local Wal-Mart and Target. Wal-Mart had the Magilla set, but there's no way I'm buying it. As for Phooey... nowhere to be seen.

Do you need to make negative comments in every thread when people A) aren't talking to you and B) aren't even being remotely rude/making big deals out of stuff. Relax, dude, no one here was mad at you before but people are gonna get annoyed if you keep up the nasty attitude.
This sets a good deal even for $16 episodes. At $16.99 at Target thats a little over a dollar episode. Its $25 in Canada but it should still be $16.99 the next time I'm in te U.S. Anyone know how long Target's price is lasting?

I am overjoyed!! HKP is one of my favorite H-B series. The episodes I've had time to watch are just as hilarious as I remember them. And Scatman Crothers was just perfect casting.

I have always been a Hanna-Barbera fan and watched most of their stuff on Saturday morning network TV and weekday afternoons (on local UHF TV), in the 1970's and early 1980's.
I saw the Hong Kong Phooey DVD at Target and I read the back of it.
At first, I thought there was a mistake on it. It said that Hong Kong Phooey's real name was "Penrod". I came to Toon Zone to post a question about the DVD and the name "Penrod". I always thought that his name was "Henry". Now that I read this thread, I guess I was mistaken.
His name always sounded like "Henry" to me.

I thought it was Henry too, but the always accurate (j/k) Wikipedia states his name is Penrod Pooch, and his nickname is "Penry."
"Penry"?
I have **ALWAYS** loved this series (one of the best of the late era HB stuff when the majority of thier quality had really gone down the crapper).
It's been years since I've seen this, but I always remember NEVER liking the last couple of episodes because they felt so insipid. The rest of the series though is a lot of old school fun.

It's too bad that we can't talk to someone who worked at HB at the time that "Hong Kong Phooey" was created and aired.
Maybe we could find out more about HKP's real name?

Maybe we could find out more about HKP's real name?If you wqtch the special features on the DVD set, they talk to several people who actually worked on "Hong Kong Phooey."
And besides, HKP's real name is mentioned in the opening credits, Penry the mild mannered janitor, short for Penrod Pooch.

I bought my copy last Friday. These are the same battered old prints shown on CN and Boomerang. And if memory serves, it used to have a laugh track, too...
To be honest I could do without laugh tracks in cartoons. Seems like a rather stupid idea.

Very cleverly written show, Every single person-every villian, every police officer, every townsperson-everybody on Earth thought Honk Kong Phooey was THE greatest superhero this side of Metropolis--except the cat. Spot the cat was the only single individual on Earth to realize what an incompetant, bumbling, nit wit HKP really was. This is the relationship that made it funny. Extra points for including Joe E. "ooh ooh" Ross in the series. Even if they aren't the best prints the comedy is still good.

I got this for Christmas last year, and I thouroughly enjoy shows of this genre. Big, overblown, bumbling dummy superheroes. In fact, other than seeing it a couple years ago on a friend's On Demand TV, this was the first time I've ever seen the show. I love it.
