Turner Subsidiary to Produce Anime
For the U.S. Market
June 20, 2006
Variety is reporting that the Japan Entertainment Network (JEN), a joint venture of Turner Entertainment Network and the Itochu trading company, has created a group to develop anime for the U.S. market. JEN delivers the Cartoon Network to nearly 5 million cable and satellite subscribers in Japan and has adapted Cartoon Network series such as the PowerPuff Girls for the Japanese market.
Now JEN plans to work with anime studios to develop two series a year targeting 6-11 year-olds, who form the core demographic for the Cartoon Network's daytime programming. According to Variety the first project has not yet been announced, but JEN hopes to be able to produce two anime series for the U.S. market per year.
we knew Turner was making 3 anime but I guess thats changed a little and soon we will get at least 2 a year? daytime programming sounds like a fit for Miguzi?

Anime targeting 6-11? Don't they get it yet, anime does best with 9-17.
I wonder if this was the original Turner making anime deal or a completely different one. I'm not so sure the American animation fanbase will be so hip to this idea. Infact the folks that don't like anime are going to be quite angry about this.
But here's a question... Where for art thou PPGZ?

It's the same, all the names match up.

6-11 watched Pokemon, DBZ, YGO and now watch Naruto and maybe Zatch Bell but overall the vast majority of even shonen anime appeal to viewers older than that. And while some of those did great with kids they also did great or better with tweens and teens. It only seems natural to make a anime with the intention of 9-14 being the audience at least.

Anime covers a wide range of shows and types of shows. If they specifically said they were making certain types of Shonen anime then yeah, it probably should be aimed at 9-14 instead of 6-11. However, we don't know what kind of shows they are making yet, whether they be more a Hamtaro or a Hakusho. We'll just have to wait and see.

Stuff like this made me cynical towards Anime...
I doubt these "two anime a year" will result in anything more than comittee shows and clones.
Do we really need a fundamentalist christian take on Pokemon?
Or a Soccermom version of Dragon ball Z?
I guess these comittee shows are the final nail in the coffin, right after Retard and what's her face on each friday

I hope that rock show that's featured on the front page is one of these projects...
In other words, two animé programmes a year is way too many... that's probably on par with how many new originals they produce yearly. I certainly don't hope all of the initiative is going into Cartoon Network alone; I'd love to see some of this effort go into a new hour-long programme for TNT (very funny [as in "it's probably never going to happen"]).

If CN is serious about making anime for 6-11, I would do the following if I were in their shoes:
A) Get back the rights to "Hamtaro".
B) Coax 4Kids into bringing "Doremi" onto CN (and try to pick up something like "Kirby" or "Sonic X" as well while you're at it).
Look, that demographic certainly tuned into shows like "Astroboy", "Speed Racer" and "Kimba", not to mention some of the good animes CBN/Family and Nickelodeon brought over in the 1980s. CN's plan can be successful, but not if it maroons those two shows by themselves on the schedule, instead of slotting them into an entire block aimed at attracting those viewers (i.e., no more disasters like debuting "Hamtaro" on Toonami, or debuting a Tickle Me block composed of nothing but new unfamilar shows).

I heard from someone that an anime based on the "Gamera" films is going to air on Cartoon Network in 2007 or 2008.

4Kids doesn't own Kirby anymore.

Quick Nintendo! Give the DVD rights to Viz Media and release the rest of the series!

They lost Pokemon and Nintendo merchadise but they still have the Kirby anime. They have the show page on www.4kids.tv (http://www.4kids.tv) still and they have it in the video on-demand section.
I also see one link to an F-Zero page at the bottom of the screen.

I heard from someone that an anime based on the "Gamera" films is going to air on Cartoon Network in 2007 or 2008.
It would make all the sense in the world for that to be part of the JEN venture, "Godzilla" was increasingly kiddified through the 1960s before the trend turned back in recent years to making him the terrifying monster he was originally, but "Gamera" was always intended to appeal to children. Face it, a turtle as an action hero is just a bit teensy-weensy ridiculous from an adult perspective, as Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman found out to their profit a long time ago.

It really doesn't matter who has the rights, the point is that if Cartoon Network is serious about this JEN venture, they should be looking for familiar animes like "Kirby" to bolster the new shows JEN would be sending over, what killed Tickle Me was that CN started with nothing but new unknown shows, and then only later plugged in a few of their weaker established shows like "Baby Looney Tunes."
(Between you and me, I would love "F-Zero" to come back so we could see the ending episodes at last. Not here though, the show really skews a little older than the 6-11 demographic, if CN wanted a racing show to fit in with the JEN shows, they'd be much better off bringing back "Speed Racer".)

"Hamtaro". B) Coax 4Kids into bringing "Doremi" onto CN (and try to pick up something like "Kirby" or "Sonic X" as well while you're at it). That's the sort of thing I'm afraid it will be. Anime has banal crankouts too. The 6-11 seems to be the recognised block demogroaphic. Though sometimes they can surprize with a decent show. Code Lyoko was for that slot, but so was Pet Alien :p I'm sure there will be quite a few "racer" shows like the new stuff Jetix has been adding. The one good thing about volume is they can't all be plotless and trite,,, can they?

I don't think we'll be seeing another racing show, let alone an original one, for a while.

B) I'm not sure about Doremi, But Kirby & Sonic are best off on Blu-Ray/HD-DVD.

That would be Tickle U. Tickle Me is just sounds WRONG in a sick way...
Besides, Tickle U ended MONTHS ago.
And why do you assume that series will be release 50+ episodes at a time on one disk for only $25?
Companies are out to make a profit, not release things by the truckload.

Woops. :ack: Sorry. :o
(And Tickle U might still be airing if they had handled it right. Which means the people behind this JEN venture should take warning and not make the same blunders, if they're smart.)

I'm betting all future Nintendo anime will be dubbed in-house, just like Pokemon.
