Just out of curiosity, how would your family – parents, siblings, grandparents and so on – react to any of the following revelations? If you like, you can also can also reverse these questions to ‘what would I do if my child told me....’

So:

1. What would your family do if you told them you were doing drugs?

2. If you told them you were going to marry some one of another race?

3. What would they do if you told them you were gay?

4. That you decided not to go to college, even though you have the grades and money to go?

5. That you were going to change your religion to one your family has never followed?

6. What would your family do if you said you had killed a person and needed help hiding from the police?

1. Beat my ass.
2. Be proud, and encourage me.
3. Be dissapointed.
4. Be curious to my alternative.
5. Be concerned, but ultimately not care.
6. Be on my own....is what I'd be.

2. If you told them you were going to marry some one of another race?Mom would fight me on it a bit, but she'd accept it once she saw that I... we were happy. Dad probably wouldn't say anything, that's just the way he is with me. My sisters would be happy that I was getting married. Hell, even if it was to a woman.

3. What would they do if you told them you were gay?I've already discussed something similar with my family, parents excluded. Sisters took it, surprisingly, very well. Back to the hypothetical question, Mom would tell me that I'm just confused and I should stop being stupid. Dad, again, wouldn't say anything, but I think he'd be disappointed.

4. That you decided not to go to college, even though you have the grades and money to go?Dad would be very, very disappointed, as would Mom, but to a lesser extent. My second-eldest sister would be nearly as disappointed as Dad, moreso than Mom.

5. That you were going to change your religion to one your family has never followed?Already happened. They all took it very well.

1. What would your family do if you told them you were doing drugs? A) It would depend what kind of drugs. B)It would depend by what family members your talking about. My parents would kick me out of the house, while my grandparents, aunts and uncles would just not think of it as a big problem

2. If you told them you were going to marry some one of another race?My mother wouldn't like the idea but ultimately would be happy for me. As for the rest, they wouldn't care as long as she was a good women.

3. What would they do if you told them you were gay?I never asked my father about that but my mother would just support me. I don't know how serious she is about that cause she knows I'll never be gay but I could only assume she would.

4. That you decided not to go to college, even though you have the grades and money to go?They kick me out of the house and tell me I'm on my own.

5. That you were going to change your religion to one your family has never followed? As long as the religion wasn't one that harms others or yourself they wouldn't give a rats ass. But seeing as how my family is more spiritual than religious, this isn't such an outrageous question.

6. What would your family do if you said you had killed a person and needed help hiding from the police? This question is a little to ambiguous for my taste cause a lot things could play into that. If I was homocidal manaic, then maybe not, or if I killed a person in self defense then maybe yes. I get the question though and the answer would probably be they would help me, especially my mother.

2. If you told them you were going to marry some one of another race? Be happy that I'm getting married.

4. That you decided not to go to college, even though you have the grades and money to go? Went for a year. My mom and sister (and other relatives, as well as a couple friends) want me to go back.. but we don't have the money.. if we did, I still wouldn't. I'm following my dream, and it's fingertips away from being a reality.

5. That you were going to change your religion to one your family has never followed? I've done this too many times. My mom doesn't care (my sister's a pain about it, but accepts it [secretly I know!]). My dad doesn't really care... at least he doesn't show it. If my grandparent's found out.. they would try to talk me out of it.. like that would happen! lol

Funny, I started every thought in answering a question with they will yell at me and beat me down...

The reason I believe that there would not be much discussion because my parents are very traditional and stuck to their ways. They want to further those ways to the next generation so they would kill me if I would marry someone outside of my race or if I changed my religion. Since Ma and Pa don't "smoke or alcoholize", drugs would be another red flag.

My mother is uneducated about homosexuality and believes that it originated in the US and is a mental illness because men should be with women and vica versa. She would not tolerate anything that even supports gay rights.

There would not be a living Malex if I refused to go to college or killed a person because I would have been murdered by my mothers hands or the electric chair.

1. What would your family do if you told them you were doing drugs? They would both be very disappointed, I guess. And they'd probably take away anything that brings me joy, like video games and the computer.

2. If you told them you were going to marry some one of another race?I'm pretty sure that they wouldn't care, but I've never really thought of it.

3. What would they do if you told them you were gay?Again, I've never really thought of it but I know I'd be looked at a bit differently...

4. That you decided not to go to college, even though you have the grades and money to go?My mom has made it VERY clear to me that I have to go to college. But I told her that I'll do whatever is best for me when the time comes.

5. That you were going to change your religion to one your family has never followed? This would not be good, considering my sister has a taped paper on her door that says "we love jesus" and my brother just bought a jesus fish to put on our car. My brother would lose all respect for me, as well as my oldest brother and his fiance. They're just too close minded, even if I spoke my mind and told them to turn off the annoying Christian music I'd be shunned. The rest of my family I don't know.

6. What would your family do if you said you had killed a person and needed help hiding from the police? My mom would blame it on all the violent videos I watch. I like to joke about violence, and once made a pretty good(at least I thought) crack about losing my fingers in the garbage disposal. She didn't like it.

I can pretty much hear what their responses would be:

1. So THAT'S why he's so spacey sometimes.......

2. There's a rather vile joke about me and these kinds of reationships that's floating around. Suffice to say, it would come as a total shock if I were getting married at all, nevermind to someone of a different race.

3. We always knew he was "different". This just confirms it.

4. Peter, meet rent bill. Rent bill, Peter.

5. Oh that's nice. So how 'bout those Mets? (We are not a terribly religious folk).

6. I think their reaction would depend on the amount of reward money on the line.

1. What would your family do if you told them you were doing drugs?
I would most likely be sent to military school and possibly boot camp that summer. Man, would that suck.

2. If you told them you were going to marry some one of another race?
I seriously don't know.

3. What would they do if you told them you were gay?
They would talk to me and view me in an entirely different way.

4. That you decided not to go to college, even though you have the grades and money to go? I would probably be nearly shunned from the family. They would view all of my time living in the house and going to school as a complete waste of time.

5. That you were going to change your religion to one your family has never followed? I know my mom would probably be worried about it, but she believes my religion is my choice to make alone. My dad could care less since he's agnostic.

6. What would your family do if you said you had killed a person and needed help hiding from the police? They'd let me hide out, but they'd beat the crap out of me first.

1. What would your family do if you told them you were doing drugs?
Help me to find the help I needed.

2. If you told them you were going to marry some one of another race?
My partner is someone of another race. My family loves him.

3. What would they do if you told them you were gay?
Did that already. They were totally fine with it.

4. That you decided not to go to college, even though you have the grades and money to go?
My sister did that. We all supported her choice.

5. That you were going to change your religion to one your family has never followed?
As long as I didn't try to convert them, there would be no problem.

6. What would your family do if you said you had killed a person and needed help hiding from the police?
I would be on my own.

What would your family do if you told them you were doing drugs?

Well they first would bombard me with questions. Then think of all the past troubles I've gotten into and bring those up. Somehow link them together with drugs and...yeah I'm screwed.

2. If you told them you were going to marry some one of another race?

They'd be happy but would need time to get along.

3. What would they do if you told them you were gay?

I really don't know about this one... They'd be suprised that's for sure.

That you decided not to go to college, even though you have the grades and money to go?

Be named a failure.

That you were going to change your religion to one your family has never followed?

They wouldn't be suprised if I did that. However my Mom on the other hand...

What would your family do if you said you had killed a person and needed help hiding from the police?

They'd take me in, but very cautious-wise.

Everyone who's said "They'd kill me!" For any of the questions... can you say that for certain? What's not to say they'd be supportive of you and your decisions? Our parents only want the best for us, and to do that we have to make our own decisions. They may not agree with the decisions, but they support us and would most likely encourage us in any endeavor we faced, as it's part of learning & life...

it makes me think that those who are saying "They'd Kill me" don't have faith that their parents can be good parents and let their kids learn from the decisions they make...

1. What would your family do if you told them you were doing drugs?
Kick my ass and then send me to mental ward.

2. If you told them you were going to marry some one of another race?
No idea.

3. What would they do if you told them you were gay?
I never plan on telling them I'm bi, but what would they do..send me to a mental ward.

4. That you decided not to go to college, even though you have the grades and money to go?
Kick me out of the house.

5. That you were going to change your religion to one your family has never followed?
This would the worst of worst. I only fear what they would do because they are such religous people.

6. What would your family do if you said you had killed a person and needed help hiding from the police?

1. They'd be dissapointed and concerned, and most likely try to get me help.

2. They might exchange looks initially, but overall they wouldn't care so long as the person I was marrying was a good person.

3. My siblings would probably be accepting- with a few reservations, maybe-, but I'm afraid what my parents would think. Of all the questions, this one has the most relevance in my life since I am GLBT and have no intentions of letting my parents know.

4. They'd probably nag me about it at first but would eventually come around. A few of my older siblings- and my younger brother, who is in Iraq with the Army- haven't gone to college, at least not right out of high school, but are still on great terms with my parents.

5. They'd probably be hurt and dissappointed, especially my dad. This one also has a bit of relevance with me as I've been exploring alternatives to Catholism- and monotheism in general- for a while, though the family doesn't know. Out of respect for them I will probably continue to go to Mass so long as I live in their house, but I can't partake in the sacraments, which is fine by me.

6. My family IS the law it seems- cops and FBI agents abound in our merry band-, so I wouldn't last long if I did. :p

So:

1. What would your family do if you told them you were doing drugs? That's something I could never tell her. She's already told me I'd be thrown out if I smoked cigarettes

2. If you told them you were going to marry some one of another race?I've learned early that mom and my girl friends don't mix. Married with grandkids may be another story. I could marry any race except one and I'll leave it at that.

3. What would they do if you told them you were gay? That would be interesting. i think I could get away with that as long as I didn't bring "friends" home. I think the "protection" speeches would be more or less unchanged.

4. That you decided not to go to college, even though you have the grades and money to go?No problems there.

5. That you were going to change your religion to one your family has never followed?I'd always said I'd join a cult. She just says "they'll take all your money", and knows that will end that idea right there. I'm pretty sure I could practice almost anything as long as I didn't make sacrifices at the house.

6. What would your family do if you said you had killed a person and needed help hiding from the police? Mom's still waiting for that one to happen, and there's no way she'd help me hide.

As for Sharon, who can tell with sisters. :raven:

2.I don't think would care just as long the guy I'm marrying doesn't cheat on me, is able to work, and isn't a jerk.

3. They would still love me as their daughter.

4. I'm already in college plus if I wasn't they would have made go to college.

First of all they would be very disapointed. Then they'll probably send me to some rehab place.

2. If you told them you were going to marry some one of another race?
I don't know. My mom would at the end probably reluctantly accept him. My dad...wow now that would be hard.

3. What would they do if you told them you were gay?

2. If you told them you were going to marry some one of another race?
I don't think they would like it, but would not be too upset.

3. What would they do if you told them you were gay?
I have not told them that I am bi, but I think my mom would be really upset.

4. That you decided not to go to college, even though you have the grades and money to go?

5. That you were going to change your religion to one your family has never followed?

1. What would your family do if you told them you were doing drugs?
Kick my butt into a rehab center. (But I've got an uncle who's proof of the worthlessness of drugs, so that's not a concern.)

2. If you told them you were going to marry someone of another race?
Likely nothing, as long as I was happy and she was a good girl.

3. What would they do if you told them you were gay?
Probably flip out.

4. That you decided not to go to college, even though you have the grades and money to go?
I did go to and finish college (the first person in my entire family to ever do so, actually), so it never came up. But from the way they acted, especially my mom, during the times I was wanting to give up, they'd probably be upset.

5. That you were going to change your religion to one your family has never followed?
We've never really followed any particular one to begin with.

6. What would your family do if you said you had killed a person and needed help hiding from the police?
Well, with my mom and brother as volunteers for our police department (and my brother currently studying for a career in law enforcement), I wouldn't be free for very long.

Before I read any of the others, I'll post mine.

1. What would your family do if you told them you were doing drugs?
Tell the police, then say they did it because they love me.

2. If you told them you were going to marry some one of another race?
They'd be fine with that.

3. What would they do if you told them you were gay?
Make an appointment with the pastor. For me AND for them.

4. That you decided not to go to college, even though you have the grades and money to go?
I already went, but they would say "It's your decision" and leave it at that.

5. That you were going to change your religion to one your family has never followed?
They would sit there in silence, then act toward me like Marge did to Bart in the shoplifting episode for the rest of their lives.

6. What would your family do if you said you had killed a person and needed help hiding from the police?

1. Probably over look it and get me off them without law enforcement...seriously, when it comes to being "strict" my parents suck at it.

2. My dad, is a little racist so I dunno how he'd take to it, but my mother would have no problem with it.

3. My dad, would kill me, seriously, as to colin's question, all he ever talks about is how much he hates gays and hopes they would die.

4. Force me.

5.Wouldn't care.

6. Turn me in for reward money.

1. What would your family do if you told them you were doing drugs? Probably blow a gasket, confiscate the drugs, and turn me over to the police. Though it does depend on the type of drug. If it were a little weed, my parents would probably lecture me, take it away, or shrug it off. Anything worse than that, jail time. But I don't and never will do drugs in the first place, so that's not a problem.

2. If you told them you were going to marry some one of another race? Wouldn't care, since I'm still/I was madly in love with a Vietnamse-American guy and they're pretty well aware of this. My relationship with him is a bit complicated however.

3. What would they do if you told them you were gay? I already asked them this, they told me flat out that they wouldn't care. Might crack a few off color jokes with me about because my family is just werid that way.

4. That you decided not to go to college, even though you have the grades and money to go? Well since I'm going to college now (though my grades the first two semsters wern't so hot) it's not a problem. But I'd get a pretty stern lecture about it if I didn't, since my dad didn't start seriously start taking college classes till he was in his late 30's and regrets not going sooner. He got his masters degree just a few years ago. They'd be very dissaponted, dad morso than mom for the above reason.

5. That you were going to change your religion to one your family has never followed? Not a problem, my family isn't religious to begin with. Even though I was baptized, they kinda believe that religion is a thing that's best left up for a person to decide when they're old enough to understand it. At least that's what I think they think.

6. What would your family do if you said you had killed a person and needed help hiding from the police? Probably turn me in after awhile. They have their limts.

Say "WTF" and would ultimately be rather pissed asking why would I do something to ridiculously stupid. Then they'll send me to rehab or counseling.

2. If you told them you were going to marry some one of another race?

Be a bit shocked and kinda disappointed at first. But if he's a nice guy, they would grow to accept it and be happy for me. My dad would take longer to come around however.

3. What would they do if you told them you were gay?

VERY disappointed. Would think that I was confused or going through some phase. They would definately force me to make an appointment with the pastor.

4. That you decided not to go to college, even though you have the grades and money to go?

Give much a lot of flack and try to talk me into going. If I still haven't changed my mind, they would make me get a job.

5. That you were going to change your religion to one your family has never followed?

Wonder if I've lost my mind. Would take VERY long for them to come around. Another appointment with the pastor and my grandma (who's very religious)

6. What would your family do if you said you had killed a person and needed help hiding from the police?

Disbelief, but would ultimately turn me in.

1.) They would support me and get me the help I need.

2.) They are open-minded. That's what I love that about my parents, so they would be happy for me, no matter what race.

3.) They would ask me why, but I'm guessing they'll still love me, but they will look at me differently.

4.) "ARE YOU GOING TO THROW YOUR LIFE AWAY LIKE THAT? WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH YOU?!"

5.) Actually, I'm wondering how to tell my parents I can't stand my current religion, and how I really want nothing to do with it anymore.

6.) I know they love me, but I don't know what they would do in that kind of situation....

Question 1 - yelled at, get a good beating, and forced into rehab
Question 2 - they would be surprised, possibly talk me out of it, but in the end will know that they have to accept it
Question 3 - my dad would break my face, disown me, and never speak to me again. My mother would dismiss it as a phase and demand that I see a psychiatrist or she'll never talk to me again.
Question 4 - No choice. They'll make me go.
Question 5 - Angry and demand that I stick with my Ortho Christian religion. Being kicked out of the house is also a possibility.
Question 6 - they would be very apprehensive about it at first. But eventually, they'll let me stay and egg me to turn myself in.

There are some things that parents will support you in and some that they don't, Colin. When you know your parents and the way they think, you'll see what they'll be supportive of.

1) My mom would probably immediately start nagging me to get help. The nagging would consume every single future conversation we will have.

2) That's an easy one. My mom would do backflips, break out the champaign, and immediately start pestering me for grandkids. I should point out I'm 30 and while I am actively dating, lately I tend to be the one who ends the relationship (I want a committed relationship but refuse to settle - mom doesnt' see it that way). When I told my mom I broke up with my last girlfriend, she actually yelled at me and capped it off with "I WANT GRANDKIDS!".

3) I think I'd probably be able to actually see the promise of grandchildren physically die in my mother's eyes. (do you see a trend here?)

4) Actually happened. I went to college four full years after finishing high school. I was in the top 7% in my class (class of over 400), National Honors Society, and earned a four year full tuition scholarship to my primary college of choice. Despite all that, I decided to work instead. In all honesty, my head wasn't in the right place, and I needed some growing up to do.

My dad didn't say much, but my mom threw it back in my face every opportunity she got. Complaining to me that I forgot to unload the dishwasher would eventually devolve to yelling at me for not going on to college. To say it really strained our relationship is an understatement.

While holding down a full time job I eventually went back to that very same college, taking classes nights and weekends and paying out of pocket for what I would have gotten free (zero monetary help from family). It was the single most important life lesson I could have learned, and I firmly believe I am a better person for experiencing it. When I was close to graduating, I overheard her on the phone say this to my aunt, "I'm so glad Mike finally decided to take my advice and go back to school." Words cannot do justice the animosity I felt when I heard that.

I ended up not telling my family when commencement was and walked with myself as the only witness. I did not go back to school for their benefit. (Can you sense some latent animosity still present?)

5) They'd just stare at me blankly. My family is non practicing catholic, so if I actually started practicing religion (any religion) they'd just shrug and go along with my wishes.

6) Patiently wait till I finished speaking, and then immediately call the very police I was trying to evade.

They'd turn me in as I would expect them to after making sure I have a goof lawyer with me.

A goof lawyer? I guess they probably want you to go to jail then, eh?

1. What would your family do if you told them you were doing drugs?

I feel like I had this conversation with my mom once before. I don't remember how she took it, though, we were both high at the time.

2. If you told them you were going to marry some one of another race?

Too late! If I get married, that's pretty much a foregone conclusion. It wouldn't really be an issue since that's what my parents did.

3. What would they do if you told them you were gay?

My mom actually thought I might be gay in high school because of the troubles I had. At this point, though, both my parents would be very shocked (and honestly, so would I)

4. That you decided not to go to college, even though you have the grades and money to go?

Too late! I already went, but if this happened six years ago, they'd want to be certain I had a good reason for not going (like if I had a good job lined up) and would still encourage me to take classes on the side or enroll full time in the near future.

5. That you were going to change your religion to one your family has never followed?

Too late! Not so much change my religion as rejected my father's. He may've been a little disappointed at the time, but he got over it. My sister never practiced his religion anyway.

6. What would your family do if you said you had killed a person and needed help hiding from the police?

There's a lot of hypotheticals in that. If I found myself in a situation where I killed someone, I'd take responsibility for it. I'd tell my parents and we'd go to the police together. If I did it because all of a sudden I went nuts and wanted to be a freak, I would avoid involving my parents in the first place.

Aaaaand just because I feel too old for half those, if I ever had kids and they said these things, I'd...

1) Find out how much/to what extent and punish them appropriately
2) Kill their butt
3) Be disappointed if I hadn't already figured it out
4) Charge them rent/make them get a job
5) Not applicable, but in any case, I'd try to support them (you did say religion and not cult, right?)
6) Act as an alibi and frame someone else (unless there's a bounty, in which case I'd have the full intention of collecting)

(all answers subject to change over the next twenty-thirty years)

You wouldn't want them to do it?

You wouldn't want them to do it?

I was just kidding. Assuming my children are mine biologically, they'll have multiple ethnicities and would most likely end up marrying someone who's at least partly a difference race.

1. Send me to a rehab center, but not before seriously letting me have it.

2. They would be happy for me and support me.

3. They would still love and support me.

4. Disappointment, but they wouldn't force me, I don't think. Maybe guilt me into it.

5. My family is very religious (at least on my mom's side) so I can't say I wouldn't make a few people angry.

1. My parents would turn me into the police, my brother might if it was hard drugs, while my uncles wouldn't care. Aunts and Grandma would also turn me in.

2. My parents and brother wouldn't care, the rest of my family is racist. (I'm not, just to get that across)

3. My Mom and Dad would be upset, I don't think my brother would care.

4. I'd get yelled at and told how stupid I am, maybe even get kicked out of the house.

5. Dad and Brother wouldn't care, Mom would cry about "How you turned your back on God" (Has happened before).

6. No matter what family member it is, they would call the police.

1. What would your family do if you told them you were doing drugs?
Turn me into the cops and push for rehab.

2. If you told them you were going to marry some one of another race?
I have, they said "does she make you happy? Okay then."

3. What would they do if you told them you were gay?
Accept it I guess, and then probably never talk to me about relationships again.

4. That you decided not to go to college, even though you have the grades and money to go?
They would have sent me anyway. But that never came up, I was too greedy for money, power and prestige.

5. That you were going to change your religion to one your family has never followed?
Probably try to convert me back when we talked.

6. What would your family do if you said you had killed a person and needed help hiding from the police?
Depends, if it was self-defense or just because I was mad. If it wasn't self-defence, turn me in and pray for my soul. If it was self-defence, turn me in and get a good lawyer.

My family, like me, are pretty legalistic.
