View Full Version : Sound Sensitivity...

Is there such a thing; being sound sensitive?
I only ask because I was listening to a music sample, and I experienced happiness for about...45 seconds. When it ended, I felt sad. (Then again, it was one of my favorite songs remixed into what I imagined the way it would be).
When I watched War of the Worlds, when the aliens did their call, I remember being so frightened by it that I was basically shaking, all the way up to the end of the movie. Again, this was sound at work.
Sometimes, my media player rotates and it lands on a random rap song, and I have the sudden urge to beat the hell out of something (or drive ridiculously fast when I'm in my car). I just get agressive. The polar opposite, a slow song, I tend to be depressed or gloomy. Moreso if the lyrics strike a cord somewhere.
Then again, I am a musician, but I'm pretty sure that it doesn't apply to this type of person. How about you?

It sounds like various sounds and songs trigger certain emotional responses in you. That's what music is SUPPOSED to do.
It's more a question of auditory input linking up with memory and emotion 'files' in our brains. Our brains work at finding patterns and connections, even if no direct links exist. It's the same reason we look at clouds and see other things in them.
It's normal brain function, not sensitivity to sound.

I am generaly happy when I head my favorite songs which are fast beat usualy.
There is one song in particular what can possibly lead me to depression ;), its Linkin Park My December. I love Linkin Park, but that is the saddest sond I have ever heard.

Oh yeah...both versions are sad, but I think the original takes the cake. Don't listen to it when it's cold and dark.

Odd, I never though My Decemebr was particularly sad. it does have a downbeat sound, but the lyrics are actually kinda uplifting....kinda.
It is entirely possible to be that sensitive to music, if you're in the right mood. The sound in War of the Worlds was particularly designed to scare the living *bleep* out of you. It worked on me to. If music and sound didn't trigger some kind of reaction from you than it's really not doing a good job.
Of course, just becasue music can influence you doesn't mean it's in any way an excuse for losing control of one's self and being stupid.

Well, I'm totally untrained, but like anything else, I'm sure there are people who are very sound-oriented. Such as myself, for example. I can get into music more than most, and I take it very seriously if something catches my attention. If I'm listening to a song I enjoy and someones tries to talk, or if someone changes the station, I become annoyed and/or depressed. It stimulates my mind, gives my thoughts focus, so to speak.
So yeah, just as people notice colors or or smells, I suppose you and I notice music and sounds. Harmoies and rhythms. Go us! :D

There's this other weird ability too: able to take apart music and listen to the more subtler sounds frequently. Even hear two voices from the person singing (well, two octaves at the same time, if that's really possible...).
It depends how layered the song is though.
Not sure if it's possible to taste a color though.

If you're a Synthase, it's very easy to taste a color, see a sound and things liek that. I know someone who has some of those abilities. Gives her some really weird sensations when listening to music.
