Yes kids there is a Santa Claus (and he works at WHV).

So... you remember how we said that for every piece of good DVD news this week, there was a piece of bad news? Well... how 'bout we end the week on a REALLY great note, sans the dark could? You may have heard the word from Daily Variety (http://www.variety.com/story.asp?l=story&a=VR1117944173&c=20) this morning. Yes... Ridley Scott's Blade Runner is FINALLY, officially, coming to DVD. It's going to be coming to HD-DVD. And it's going to be coming to Blu-ray Disc as well. This is real... it's happening... and it's going to be very, very cool.

First a bit of background on the reason for the title's delay. Warner had been planning a 2-disc special edition of the film early last year... but suddenly realized that their rights to the title were about to lapse. However, the studio ponied up the big bucks to get back what is arguably one of their primo Cadillac catalog titles (dare you to say that three times fast). The ownership situation now resolved, Warner has set in motion plans to really do something special with the film. You might recall back in January when I asked them about the film at their 2006 catalog press event, they hinted that things were looking good for a 2007 release. Privately, we were told that there were BIG things in the works, but were also told that if we leaked too much about the project, we might end up like Fredo Corleone (or WORSE, that the project itself could be complicated). Needless to say, though we've been dying to talk about this for months now (and we get about two e-mails a day asking about the title), we've kept largely silent on the subject. Now that the project is finally out in the open, however, we can finally say a few things. Keep in mind that the major portion of the release is still over a year away. But here's the basic plan...

This coming September, there will be a new limited DVD release (HD-DVD & Blu-ray Disc are also planned) of the restored 1992 Director's Cut (you know... the one that isn't really a director's cut). This will be available for just four months. We believe this is basically the 2-disc release that Warner had originally planned to bow LAST year.

Then next year, just in time for the film's 25th anniversary, Ridley Scott's ultimate Blade Runner: The Final Cut will hit theaters for a limited run. This will be a REAL director's cut, with restored scenes and more - all the stuff that Ridley's always wanted to do with the film but hasn't really been given the chance to do before. That will be followed later in the year by an Ultimate Blade Runner DVD release. You can expect a multi-disc box set (again, likely with a simultaneous HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc release) that will contain at least four different versions of the film... ALL in full anamorphic widescreen, we might add. You'll get the film's original U.S. theatrical cut, you'll get the expanded international theatrical cut, you'll get the 1992 Director's Cut and you'll get the new Final Cut as well. Now... we realize at this point, you may have questions. Keep in mind, there's a TON of additional material that's going to be included in this set that hasn't been announced and can't be talked about yet - all-new material that you've never seen before. The set is pretty early in the planning and production stage, so it's way too early to talk details, but trust us... some very cool stuff is in the works. These extras will likely be different from the September '06 release, so if you buy both you'll at least be getting your money's worth.

Imagine that... anamorphic widescreen AND real value in a DVD release! Hey... are we being punked?

You veteran Bits readers will also be thrilled to learn that longtime Ridley Scott DVD producer Charles de Lauzirika and his team are involved in project, and have already been working on the set for a while now. Lauzirika, as you may know, was the producer responsible for Fox's 9-disc, massively comprehensive Alien Quadrilogy box set, as well as the multi-disc special editions of Scott's Gladiator (from DreamWorks), Black Hawk Down (from Sony) and Kingdom of Heaven (recently available from Fox), among others. You should also know that Lauzirika and his team are big fans of Blade Runner themselves. Rest assured that they know what you guys all want to see on this release, and they're working very hard to make it as good as it can be. Trust us when we say that this project is in EXACTLY the right hands.

For those who do not know, the origina bare bones disc of Blade Runner has been around for almost ten years now. Warner had wanted to deliver a special edition a few years ago but got stuck in some nasty red tape. Happily, that red tape has finally been cut. Sweetness.

I can't think of anything more to say other than a generic "ABOUT TIME!!11".

Yeah, it's about damn time. I love this movie. It's influenced just about every sci-fi story I've ever written (or tried to.) I'm definitely gonna see the rerelease next year, even though it'll be yet another cut and I have no idea if it'll be a good cut or not. But still, I'm there.

Still, what a rip they're releasing a DVD this Fall, then the box set next year that will have the same version that's already being released this Fall! Well, I've waited this long for the set, I suppose I can wait one more year. And I still have the previous DVD to hold me over until then.

That boxed set sounds amazing.

Niiice! I like how Ridley always makes sure to give his fans every version possible of his movies so that they can choose for thelmselves which one they like best...unlike some directors *cough*Lucas*cough. How about a new Road Warrior SE now, Warner?

Bladerunner: best eighties sci-fi movie ever (including the Star Wars sequels)
old dvd: boo!
new dvd: blasts of applause

With these facts collected together, the sense of euphoria and ecstacy from the vast majority of science fiction geeks is fairly predictable

....but that doesn't make stop said sense from being completely awesome

This will be an automatic purchase for me!

Hopefully we'll get deleted stuff, most notably the scene with Holden in the hospital. A clip of that actually appeared on a UK documentary a few years ago, but it was only shown on a TV screen along with someone playing it, rather than being shown full-screen. An obvious attempt to prevent anyone from splicing the scene back into a "fan cut".

Blade Runner is a great film, but I suggest renting the movie to see if you like it before buying four versions of it.

I remember that, it was shown on Channel 4 and also on that documentary Ridley Scott revealed that Deckard was actually a replicant IIRC

Dude, use spoiler tags. Not everyone reading this thread has seen the film.

My only concern is price. Several versions of the same film.. what will they bump the tag too. Can't wait to catch the film in the cinema.

Why is the Blade Runner Director's Cut DVD is "not really" the director's cut?

Why is the Blade Runner Director's Cut DVD is "not really" the director's cut?Because Ridley was too busy to personally supervise it.

WHV is so good to us. I still cry over the fact that they lost MGM to those fools at Sony.

Finally, I'll get my chance to hear Ford's narration in the original cut.

Me too, they would have done so much better.

Finally, I'll get my chance to hear Ford's narration in the original cut.

I've always preferred the narrated version. I suppose I'm biased because that's the first way that I saw it.

I have the narrated version on laserdisc but it's rotted, of course. At least I got it for free. I also recorded it off of television about two years ago. They used to show the narrated version all the time but for some reason, they stopped.

The narration, to me, is nothing special. The fact that Harrison Ford was opposed to it really comes through in his delivery of the lines. I grew up with the "narration version," but after seeing the movie without the narration, I find it much better. But at least Ridley Scott is making that version available for people who've never seen it.

I didn't really mind the narrated version up to around the third act. The ending was really cringe-worthy when putting it up with the events that came after it, and ultimately, it wasn't even necessary. The workprint ending may not be as "hit you over the head" happy, but it's still reasonably upbeat all the same. He still gets the girl either way.

Bit of an update here from the Bits...

Speaking of Warner, the studio has officially announced the re-release of Blade Runner: The Director's Cut on 9/12 (SRP $19.97). This is a single-disc release (dual-layered), with no new extras, but you'll be pleased to know that the video has been completely remastered with a brand new anamorphic widescreen film transfer. The audio will be Dolby 2.0 Surround, like the original release. Keep in mind that a much more elaborate multi-disc Blade Runner: Ultimate Edition is currently in production for release sometime in 2007 - that is CONFIRMED. This disc is really just designed to update the original Snapper case release (one of Warner's first EVER releases on DVD back in 1997) with better video in the meantime.

The main concerns I have are will this have a real menu this time and does this mean the "fake" '92 cut isn't going to be in the upcoming Ultimate Collector's edition?
