Animated DVDs
The only feature-length animated flick coming out on DVD this week is the computer animated Doogal, but Toon Zone readers might also want to grab the fourth season of Home Movies, another volume of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (vol. 3.7; "Hun on the Run"), and the first two volumes of Walt Disney's It's a Small World of Fun ("animated adventures in exciting lands!").
Recent Theatrical Releases
The biggest theatrical release making its way to DVD this week is the movie adaptation of the...Broadway adapation of the...movie, The Producers. Coming full-circle, I guess. Your usual "separate full-frame/widescreen; caveat emptor" disclaimer applies. Johnny Knoxville's The Ringer, Something New, and the remake of When a Stranger Calls are also coming out.
Hopping out of the arthouse/festival circuit are New Police Story (which was a theatrical release, just not on these shores), Shooting Livien, The White Countess, and Winter Passing.
HD DVD
Just two titles, both from our pals at Warner: Unforgiven and Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket.
Collections and Re-Releases
"Unrated extended edition" is the watchword...watchphrase...whatever, with Con Air, Crimson Tide, and Enemy of the State all winding up having that banner slapped across the cover art.
Napoleon Dynamite is also getting a special edition upgrade, and Best Buy and Circuit City are both packing this "flippin' sweet edition" (Fox marketing-speak, not mine) with lotsa goodies if you don't mind paying a bit of a premium.
TV-on-DVD
The Big Valley: Season 1 Brilliant But Cancelled: Crime Dramas (Delvecchio / Gideon Oliver / Johnny Staccato / Touching Evil) Brilliant But Cancelled: EZ Streets Grounded for Life: Season 2 Here Come the Brides: Season 1 Hill Street Blues: Season 2 Mystery Science Theater 3000: Collection 9 Supernanny: Season 1 That Girl: Season 1
BBC
The BBC's going nuts this week. The George Bernard Shaw Collection includes The Devil's Disciple, Pygmalion, The Millionairess, Heartbreak House, and Mrs. Warren's Profession, all of which are also being released individually. Other releases from the BBC today include Arms of the Man, Monarch of the Glen: Series 4, and The Six Wives of Henry VIII.
Miscellaneous Stuff
Just 'cause I'm not sure where else to list them, other releases this week include Magic Johnson: Always Showtime and one of those Tom Hanks movies no one seems to remember, Everytime We Say Goodbye.
In Closing...
For a list of some of the best prices as well as the latest price drops for existing titles, check Mike Frezon's weekly thread on the Home Theater Forum (http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htf/showthread.php?t=234614) and SalesCircular.com (http://www.salescircular.com/). A relatively comprehensive list of this week's releases can be found at DVD Talk (http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/bargain.php) and ComingSoon.net (http://www.comingsoon.net/dvd/may06.php).
So -- what are you getting this week? I have both of this week's HD DVDs in the mail to review, and I managed to snag a preview copy of the new MST3K box (http://dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=21297). Um, not actually paying for anything, tho'.
