Animated DVDs
Jay Ward's best-known characters are being treated with a couple of "best of..."s, with the first volumes of The Best of Boris and Natasha and The Best of Rocky and Bullwinkle. The first season of Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist is also coming out on DVD this week.
TV-on-DVD
Since all the animated stuff I just listed qualifies as TV-on-DVD, I might as well go ahead and finish off the list: The Andy Griffith Show: Season 6 Everybody Loves Raymond: Season 6 Facts of Life: Seasons 1 & 2 Golden Girls: Season 5 Life Goes On: Season 1 Northern Exposure: Seasons 1 & 2 Rescue Me: Season 2 Scrubs: Season 3 Sgt. Bilko: 50th Anniversary Edition That '70s Show: Season 4 The West Wing: Season 6
Recent Theatrical Releases
It's a comedy cavalcade! Both Big Momma's House 2 and Grandma's Boy are making their long-awai...oh, nevermind. Munich is being issued as both a single-disc edition and a two-disc S.E., and Nanny McPhee, The New World, and Rumor Has It... are also hitting stores. The single-disc Munich, Nanny McPhee, and Rumor Has It... are coming out as separate full-screen and widescreen editions, so if you're grabbing one of those, be sure to give the packaging an extra look to make sure you're picking up the one you want.
There's a, um, limited number of limited releases hitting DVD this week: just Fateless, On the Outs, and The Work and the Glory: American Zion.
HD-DVD
Rumor Has It... is the first HD-DVD/DVD hybrid, so if you don't mind paying a...kinda absurd premium of $11 or so on top of the regular DVD, you can have an HD-DVD version of the movie handy if-slash-when you buy a player. The hybrid concept sounds alright on paper, but the $39.99 MSRP is nuts.
As far as real HD-DVDs go, look forward to Cinderella Man, Jarhead, and Training Day.
Criterion Collection
The 400 Blows is being reissued by Criterion this week, and Yasujiro Ozu's Late Spring is being added to their esteemed collection.
Collections and Re-Releases
The American Heroes Collection compiles In Harm's Way, Hell Is for Heroes, and The Bridges at Toko-Ri.
With the nine-figure remake of Poseidon about to splash into theaters, several disaster flicks have been dusted off for special edition re-releases -- Earthquake, The Towering Inferno, and, natch, The Poseidon Adventure. Ronin is also getting the collector's edition treatment.
Miscellaneous Stuff
Cheech and Chong's Nice Dreams is being yanked out of the studio vaults this week, and if you want to go for a double feature, I guess you could grab the presumably-direct-to-video Puff, Puff, Pass (sigh) while you're at it.
TV movies/specials/whatever heading to DVD this week include Jennifer Love Hewitt's If Only, Surrender, Dorothy, and two installments of Masters of Horror -- "Chocolate" and "Incident On and Off a Mountain Road".
In Closing...
For a list of some of the best prices as well as the latest price drops for existing titles, check Mike Frezon's weekly thread on the Home Theater Forum (http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htf/showthread.php?t=234274) and SalesCircular.com (http://www.salescircular.com/). A relatively comprehensive list of this week's releases can be found at DVD Talk (http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/bargain.php) and ComingSoon.net (http://www.comingsoon.net/dvd/may06.php).
So -- what are you getting this week? I have Cinderella Man and the remake of Assault on Precinct 13 coming in to review on HD-DVD, but I'm not planning on buying anything. (Maybe the original Assault... to give me a point of reference.)
