I'm a huge punk fan. Though, true punk is dead (R.I.P. Joey Ramone....), the punk out there now is some good stuff. One of my favorite bands right now is A New Found Glory. I still go to Warped Tour every year, and I still go to punk shows, but they're getting kinda beat.
The last show I went to was The Ataris, The Vandals, and Lagwagon. I was not completely bored by Lagwagon, but the other two just weren't that good.
A couple years ago, the punk scene was great. But, ever since Blink182 made it big with their sell-out cd (and I don't mean that it couldn't stay on the shelves, I mean they SOLD OUT) Enema of the State, punk has dying down. A damn shame, I say.

A fellow Lagwagon fan? Man -- that's rare. I'd recommend Gob, MxPx, and Sum41 to ya. Yeah -- Blink182 sold out a long time ago. Compare them now to five years ago. They now grace the covers of TEEN PEOPLE, SEVENTEEN, YM, and all those girly junk magazines. Ugh.

Yeah, Lagwagon's alright. They were the one part of the show that didn't suck. Plus, their contribution to Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies (I don't know which members are in it, but I know part of them is there) is great. Me First is another great band. I mean, who would ever think you'd hear 'Mandy' in a punk way?

i think the greatest punk bands were the older ones like the misfits and the vandals(the 80s vandals). i also like the clash and the ramones. the new stuff is good but the older stuff is a little better. oh, yeah i also like the sex pistols.

i cant stand lagwagon. man there aweful. i relly like the misfits and anti-flag. but the punk scene is going way down with blink and all. its almost like they are giving punk a bad name. the old punk like vandals and misfits is really good. i recomend you listen to it. but i never get to goto any good shows cause i live in podunk america where no good bands where play any more. sucks.

I was into Anti-Flag a few years back, but now, I'm not so sure. They returned to Pittsburgh in February with A New Found Glory and Less Than Jake (two great bands together) and I just wasn't that interested anymore.
Don't get me wrong, I like the music, but I just can't stand the preaching they do every time they preform. And it's the same speeches, over and over again. I can't tell you how many times I've heard them talk about picking someone up when they fall, or how the government sucks. It just gets old.
So yeah, after a couple of years of hearing it, you just want to yell "Shut up and play the music!" I still don't know how they got onto Phat Wreck Chords. And I was amazed that they were on the Warped Tour last year too. A local band hits it big. Too bad it couldn't be one of the better Pittsburgh bands...

My roommate was in a KB Toys yesterday, and as he was at the register, the Sailor Moon theme song was playing. The guy at the register said "This song would be cool if it were punk."
My roommate asked "Well, what do you consider punk?"
"Blink 182."
It's a sad, sad day.

They are, but in a way, you start to get sick of it. Lately, they haven't even really been playing good songs at their shows. I remember when they used to open with their best song, "Davey Destroyed the Punk Scene". Now, they never play it. But they always end with "Die for the Government". Gotta end with that. I'm sick of that song.

Actually, I quite enjoy Blink. No, they are nothing mind blowing but they are, IMO, excellent entertainers. Nice to see a punk band that doesn't take themselves so seriously. Not the most skilled band in the world though.... but in my opinion they make up for it in charisma.
I think you'll find that Blink 182 isn't killing punk, but it does keep the industry's interest in the rock/punk genre (if it sells, they're interested!)
Now a true total sell out punk mainstream band is Offspring. But once again, as much as I loathe their one-tune-an-album package they do keep the industry AND the average joe aware of rock/punk's pressence. I'd rather have that than be overun by Boyzone and the Backstreet Boys.
Thanks, but no thanks.
:D
Samhaine
05-06-2001, 08:03 PM
Offspring, that's another sell-out band. Forgot about them (which it's not hard, since Smash was their last good album).
But to say that Blink is good? That's pushing it. They USED to be good. I can't call them punk. It's a crime against the good punk bands. Compare "Dude Ranch" to "Enema of the State". There's a world of difference. They changed their style of music to reach a bigger audience. Makes me sick.
James
05-06-2001, 08:31 PM
Offer me the cash they were offered I would sell out too - perhaps that just shows how very shallow I can be.
Still, I find them as entertainment very enjoyable. Sitting watching MTV/MTV2 I find their videos (and I especially include 'Dammit', pre Enema) very refreshing to the MTV standard Look-at-me-god-I'm-hard/Look-at-me-god-I'm-tortured videos. It's character which makes them popular not music. I think they know that as well as we do.
Give 'em a few years, the money will dry up, the record company will lose interest and they'll be back crawling to their original audience.... :D
Samhaine

Eh, I've given up on them. And I did see them perform live when "What's My Age Again?" came out. I went to the other side of the place (it was at Warped Tour) and watched my friend try to get his camera back. It's all a matter of personal taste, I guess.
I'd like to think that I have values, and that I wouldn't sell out if offered money. Mind you, I've never had the opportunity...
Speaking of the Warped Tour, is anyone gonna go this year? They have Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies, Less Than Jake, Snapcase, and a bunch of other ones. Looks to be good.
James Harvey

Me First & The Gimme Gimmes. Arguably one of the best punk bands, I find. I'd like to see more stuff by Screeching Weasel and Bracket also. And I consider Blink182 a pop band now, mainly becuase they appeared on about 5 - 10 POP SONG compilations alongside crap like Britney Speaks and N'Sync.
James

Blink182 a pop band now, mainly becuase they appeared on about 5 - 10 POP SONG compilations alongside crap like Britney Speaks and N'Sync.
Hmm, that brings up an interesting point - does a band change genre just because it becomes liked by a different crowd? Is pop less a definition of a type of music but just what the name suggests: popular music.
If that is what defines pop music then I hold my hand up and say that enjoy some pop music. Britney and N'Sync not included.
That brings me onto another point. Bands which cover pop songs to look 'cool'. Hey, I'm covering 'Hit me baby one more time' and I'm a male rock band - this shows how secure I am with my musical acceptability and masculinity (because it's a girls song)..!'
Aw, shut it Travis and various other bands (including my all time favourites Mr Bungle). What makes it worse is that Britney did it better. Now that's embarrassing!

what matters is their music changed them it is now really slow and poppy i honestly cannot stand them or the off spring they both sold out and were good but not that good in the first place but the transition of punk to pop has nothing to do with who listen to them it has to do with the change in the sound of their music. :D
James

Both Offspring and Blink 182 maybe a little more commercial but, like it or not, it is still a form of punk. The tracks maybe a little lighter, but it is still essentially boils down to the fact it is punk/punk rock. Both in guitars, harmonies and formula.
Now whether it's any good is a totally different matter altogether!

I'm sorry, but that just ain't punk. Tell me, with a straight face, that Adam's Song is a punk song. I dare you.
You can't. Know why? Because it's not. Not in any way, shape, or form.
That's the feeling I get from the entire cd.

Adam is a still a variant of Punk. Don't believe that Punk has to be hardcore. That song has punk roots in it's construction and compositon. What make's it sound unpunkish and more poppish the song's production. The production of the whole Album is extremely mainstream and I think that is where the change lies.
There and with a totally straight face!

Hello all, I was just wondering where does Green Day stand in the punk world? Do people still consider them punk? Do they think they sold out? I'm just wondering, because I hear more about Blink selling out (which I totally agree with), but I don't hear much about Green Day, so I was wondering if they're held in higher regard.
As for punk, I'm not a huge fan, at least of the hardcore style, just not enough melody, and a lot of times the cd just sounds like one 30 minute song to me. :)

blink is not punk it is not just softer. if u wanna compare it to softish and non hardcore punk just compare it to the ramones or the clash. they are nothing alike you would have a better time comparing them to a teeny bopper band(britney and n sync). in the end it just aint punk its just next pop crap video on trl.

mxys right. there nothing like some of the "softer" punk bands. and whats wrong with comical content? just cause a band has funny songs means there not punk? look at the vandals. they dont have one serious song and they are one of the most punk bands ever. and you cant "break down" punk music and examine it like you were. all it is power cords and a fast drum beat, most punk bands are just people who want to get their ideas out or just ahve fun with a simple kind of music thats fun and easy to play. its not freakin moatzart. you do have exceoptions to this like punk bands who break the mold, bad religion, the clash, are a couple of examples who "redifine" punk. blink just sucks. as for greenday. i havnt heard there new stuff. but if your looking for a good punk band, try billie-joe's brother tim. hes in a band called rancid and they are really good. blah blah blah.
James

and you cant "break down" punk music and examine it like you were. all it is power cords and a fast drum beat,
I agree, that is a fair assessment of punk. And if you check out Blink 182's songs you'll see on the whole, they are chord based with double time drums songs. Their close harmonies between vocals is very punk style too.
just cause a band has funny songs means there not punk?
That's what I said when I was defending Blink 182. Agree with you again.
Look, I don't want to sit here defending a band I have no particular allegiance to, but I have heard their whole album and it's not all 'what's my age again'. If I was a popster, I wouldn't be able to listen to it.
As witn Offspring and Green Day. All of them have commercial songs as they are aimed at the mass market but they are punk rock. Frankly, if you have a problem with Blink 182, then you should have a problem with Green Day and Offspring.
Anyway, I've had enough of this argument as I don't even like these bands. I've seen a lot of punk bands and been in a few too, I just think these bands are the sort we don't like to put into our catagory of music - the fact is, like it or not, they are.

Totally agree. No one is saying Blink/Offspring/G'Day are good punk. But they are lightweight punk. The sort that your 14 year old brother will proudly emblazen across his T-Shirt as he begins his rebellious years....
I say cool - if these bands can ween kids to go and see actual gigs with punk or rock bands and support the live scene rather than paying big bucks to watch Steps or Boyzone....... they're worth their weight........ IMO

How far is the furthest anyone's travelled to see a gig? Here in the UK, obviously the distances are a lot shorter (London to Glastonbury was considered a big distance as a 3 hour drive and that was for a 4 day event!). Not so much into the straight punk scene nowadays and opt for more rock/punk hybrid's (which is where my band currently sits). Used to really enjoy irish punk band Compulsion and a small London trio I used to see occasionally called Staplegun. They couldn't sing very well, the production was awful, but there was just something unique about them. Perhaps the fact I liked them and no one else did.

It doens't matter if Green Day, Fenix, Ataris and Blink aren't punk, they make good music (especially Green Day) and that's all that matters. If a band isn't punk, you guys hate them. That's freakin stupid. My definition of selling out, is when a band changes the style of their music, not for themselves, but for the money.
Blink182 did not sellout. From Cheshire Cat to Enema, their talent has gotten better. So they are going to be making more complicated songs, because of this. Another reason is their newer drummer, Travis. This can explain all the different tempo changes. Scott and Travis' style in drumming is way different and you can't expect the same crap.
And Blink182 sounds nothing like pop music, how can you say they're pop.

thats not true i do like some stuff that isnt punk(i cant speak for every one else), just not much of it. i like some ska, but thats not saying much since some of it isnt that far off from punk. but ive heard some rock songs i didnt think that were that bad. and the thing on blink 182 i just i dont like them, not really any of thier songs, old or new. any way, i doubt every one on this thread doesnt hate every thing thats not punk. blah blah rant rant.
