View Full Version : Dinosaurs - the complete 1st and 2nd seasons
Anyone else catch this series, i would think even if they are more 'mupetty' animation fans will enjoy it, specially since it was very well written. it looks like Circuit City has the best deal with it only being 28$ and you get a 5$ gift card.
I have to wait until saturday to get it but i trully can't wait..i'm also a huge dinosaur fan (have since i was little) so another fun part of the show for me.
too bad it doesn't have the spanish dub on the set ;( that dub was very good, i think even better thanthe american dub...oh well.
from reviews i've read online they're uncut, the extras are not too long but good, and the quality is nothing to compare about.
it took me a while to find some reviews, a name as generic as 'dinosaurs' doesn't help you much

It's such a delight to see this show again. My roommate bought the DVDs on Tuesday. We watched the making of the dinosaur costumes featurette, which was really interesting. I have a newfound appreciation for this show now that I'm older, wiser, and able to be entertained not only by the puppetry but by the great writing as well. We haven't looked through the entire DVD yet, but if you liked the show--or haven't seen it but love Jim Henson--there's no reason not to get it.

If the episode where Earl is a TV executive is on it, watch that immediately. That's one of my favorite television half-hours of all-time!

I still remember "Box Full of Puppies" as one of the faux pitch shows for that episode
and when Animal Planet aired "Puppy Bowl", I was dumbfounded because it was the same premesis omnly now it was real.

i'm getting this wednesday along w/ Dr Katz...and Law & Order: Trial By Jury (Bebe Neuwirth:D )
i remember watching on fox when it was syndicated for afterschool viewing
i'd watch this and MST3K followed by Batman: The Animated Series & Gargoyles (back when afternoon programming was actually watchable)

I wonder how much was cut for syndication, aside from the theme, anyway. I've seen the episodes a lot in syndication back in the day, but watching the DVD, I can't really spot differences in most of the episodes, which probably just means I don't remember things well enough. The stuff cut from syndication jumped out at me most for "What Sexual Harris Meant," with the whole Richfield and Earl charades scene going on longer and getting a lot more ridiculous, and the member of the board of directors who took forever to ask his question taking even longer.
I've always wondered why the sliding glass door in the kitchen for the first twelve episodes was later replaced by the wooden double doors. Someone else has to have noticed that other than me.
I was begging to worry it'd get a fate similar to Gargoyles but S3 and 4 announced for May 1st!

i thought they'd space the releases since they are larger seasons, glad to see the series finished, counting i didn't watch most of the S4.
Only complain is the great spanish dub is probably not going to be included again :(

Yes! Everyone reading this: you NEED this set, even if you think you don't.
"Network Genius" is one of my favorite episodes of any TV show ever made. It's the funniest, most brilliant, most clever satire of the television business ever written. You're gonna love it.
36 episodes on 4 discs? Phew. The most TV episodes a DVD can hold is 9 without getting into compression and sacrificing picture quality. How are they going to fit the extras on? I hope this doesn't mean they DID compress.....
The seven "unaired" episodes they mention DID air--in syndication and on the Disney Channel. I was surprised then to see episodes I knew I hadn't seen before. If they were cut for syndication in any way, we might be seeing some new scenes......
Season 4 was a lot darker than the others. In addition to that infamous last episode, there were a lot of other episodes with humor that was just...grim. Example: Ethyl goes to her high school reunion, only to find she's the only one there because all her old friends are dead.

36 episodes on 4 discs? Phew. The most TV episodes a DVD can hold is 9 without getting into compression and sacrificing picture quality. How are they going to fit the extras on? I hope this doesn't mean they DID compress.....Technically, all video on DVD has some compression, the question is how much. With the minimum amount of compression allowed by the format, you could fit only five 22-minute shows on a DVD-9. With the maximum amount of compression, it would be closer to 30 22-minute episodes, but no one wants to see studio quality DVD video that compressed.
My point is that you're right about nine episodes being the most you usually see on a DVD. But, it's not a special number that is a line not to be crossed. Part of the reason they don't put more than nine on a disc (in addition to a slight decrease in quality) is that they don't want consumers to notice they can fit more on a disc than they usually do. Take Animaniacs for example, they could fit the 25 episodes per volume on three discs with a little room left for extras. Even at the same level of compression they're currently using for the series, they could do it on four discs without a problem. Why do they use five discs then? To make the consumer more willing to pay the price.
For a more apples to apples comparison, I'll use Power Rangers Mystic Force as an example. Why that show? It's a live-action show recently released on DVD by Disney/BVHV just like Dinosaurs. The third volume of PRMF DVDs includes four episodes. Each is roughly under 750MB. A DVD-9 can hold about 8,140MB. At nine episodes, you would still have around 1,400MB left for menus and extras. If the menus are basic video-less menus, then that's room for over half an hour of extras on the same DVD-9 disc.
Would the episodes look better if they chose a compression level closer to the minimum? Sure. However, that compression level was chosen because it was the most compression they could use without a noticeable drop in quality. Even if Dinosaurs episodes are 850MB on this set, which is within the usual range, there would still be room for a menu just like the first release had and about 10-15 minutes for extras on each disc.
Most likely any problems with the video will be from the film or videotape source...

It just makes me mad that, if the episode order listed on the site is the same as on the DVD, they're putting Changing Nature in the middle of season 4, when it should be at the end, considering they, you know, DIE.

Have they ever even aired Changing Nature in syndication? I only recall seeing it that one time in 1994 and having my hardwired eight year old brain having the equivalent of "Oh No They Did-Ent!".

TVShowsOnDVD usually copies their episode lists from EPGuides or TV.com. Even if it was on the press release, there's still time for that to be changed. Press releases usually list episodes by the discs they are on, so I suspect the list is Gord's work, not Disney's.

I'm interested in the episodes they wouldn't air on the Disney Channel, as I haven't seen them in ages.

I hope you're right. I mean, i'll still buy the set, but I'll be bitter about it if that episode isn't at the end of the set.
